Microsoft is apparently working with Chinese regulators to allow the sale of its Xbox 360 console in the country of 1.3 billion people. Shanghai Daily (subscription required) reports that Ya-Qin Zhang, a corporate VP for MS in China, stated the company is hoping to launch the console legally in the country, but there's currently no timetable on when that will happen. Gamasutra notes the only officially available console in China -- which has a healthy gray console market -- is the iQue, based on N64 hardware and released in 2003.
Neither the Nintendo Wii nor Sony's PlayStation 3 are available in the country. Ironically, both those consoles, along with the Xbox 360, are manufactured in China.

Well they have games the're just all pirated. For example I was in Bangladesh last year and there are hundreds of game shops full of the latest 360 titles all pirated. You can't buy a real even if you wanted to! So I have no idea how Microsoft is going to make money in China.
The PS3 on the other hand hasn't taken off there because they haven't figured out how to copy blueray games yet.

I believe the strategy here is to have an actually legal video-game business presence. If they have that, than they might be able to actually work through legal channels to actually get something done about that no holds bar piracy.
It's the same thing movie studios have been trying.

Yes, I see no problem with this, as long as they acquire the correct paperwork from the Ministry of Foreign Dangers and Moist Assholes. Otherwise, I would hope that our great leader would see to it that this filth stays away from our proud and productive nation.

This time the red-ring will be a "feature". The RRoD means you've been playing too long, get back to work.
sorry, couldn't help myself.

Probably not in china PC gaming still remains king and when they see a console they will say what ever PC gamer says like "its underpowered" or "no keyboard or mouse." But don't get me wrong MS might sell a million more consoles but it won't come close to other markets sales.

Still, if MS comes up with a 360 bundle exclusive to china with games only on xbox, then I think it would convince them to purchase one. I think MS just wants to be the first to do this because it can't compete with Wii & PS3 in Japan.

Yeah... except for the likely imports that go under the radar, like in the rest of the world where the machines haven't been officially released. Seriously, with taxes and all that crap, they might end up costing more if officially released rather than imported from somewhere else.

Well there is a positive side to this endeavor, if the Chinese government do allow Microsoft to sell Xbox 360s in China then the product becomes legitimate and would offer benefits such as customer support and warranty. At the moment, people in china are shelling huge amount of money for Japanese imports. I had a friend who bought one in china and within a few days the unit RRODed. So basically my friend shelled out over a thousand yuan for a piece of brick. There were countless units that became defective after being purchased, mostly due to the RROD problem, and to have it fixed most Chinese have to go to a private shop and pay a couple hundred of yuan to fix issues where we Americans can get fixed for free. So buyers protection is non existent for anyone who intends to purchase an Xbox 360 in China at the moment, same with the Wii and PS3.

But the chinese government won't have to worry about that because microsoft will just sell their new console & since the RROD epidemic happened before the consoles selling in china, it wouldn't count. They'd consider it a brand new console in their country even though it's been 5 years since it's release

I was not aware that China was so cut off. Entertainment isn't necessary for sustaining life, but damn they must be starving for some Xboxin' and Playstationin' and Wiiin'.

@UNSCleric As a resident of China I wonder they teach your in American schools. China may not be a democracy, but at we made genuine improvements in our living standards, and today's Chinese government is far more open than their predecessors. I find your government an even bigger embarassment: starting wars across the worlds and butting in the affairs of other countries.

Democracy is the worst form of Government, other than all the others that have been tried.
It's the human rights violations and censorship that are China's biggest problems that need to be addressed right now. Other social reforms still need to come but to quote alpha centari "Beware he who would deny you information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master"

And this is why China is amassing almost all the money in the world. They export almost everything, and import very little. With all that money, they're also the world's loan shark and someday they'll want to collect.

It will be a deliciously painfully hilariously ironic day when we have to hand over ownership of America to China. "Oh, poor America, you rost at your own capitarism game!"
All because we rack a disciprine.

@Foetoid Did America owe up to their past support of dictatorships such as Pinochet's Chile, their forced removal of Native Americans from their lands, and their slavery and racial segregation against African Americans? America loves to bitch about how evil China is, but I don't see China telling Americans how to run their country. Lay off the Fox News and Glenn Beck.
