They could do it like iPhone/iPod Touch.
Basically the same device but one is a phone, one is not.

Maybe we'll be forced to use Sony Connect to sync it up.

What's that? You want to put your music collection on this device? Sure thing! It is all Sony-branded music, right?

They lose me at "long touch pad" to mimic dual analog input." I hate touch controllers that why I used to use my PSP for game( before it die) and not my Phone.

Text entry on the PSP is SHI-I-I-I-ITTY. Seriously, one of its worst features.

If they don't have a QWERTY board, they'd bestter have SOME plan for better text entry.

"bestter?"

I'd like to claim that was the result of PSP text entry, but I'm afraid I must admit it's just a splitting headache and a caffeine rush.

It's not like I'M buying one. I just felt the "shitty PSP text entry" needed to be mentioned, since it's often overlooked.

@(Unverified) It's an Android phone - of course it has a touchscreen, won't work without.

I got a Sony Ericsson phone, it's nice, it just came out recently... and it's running Android 1.6, with a supposed upgrade to 2.1 (not even 2.2) later in the year. This one's going to have 3.0? In October? Really?

(Also, those hoping for Snapdragon 2 rather than 1... I guess maybe, but again - in October? Really?)

I like the text entry on the PSP Go.
I'm sure it'll have touchscreen for "easy" text or else it'll be hell for texting/emailing cause as much as I like it, texting messages/emails back and forth would be annoying.

@Faceless Troll That's my concern, too. At least it won't worry itself with a physical dialpad. But yeah... this might be the N-Gage all over again. Hopefully a good N-Gage, but still an N-Gage.

I might be the only person here who would consider that a good thing. Got me an N-Gage for chrimbo and still using it as my everyday phone. I find it funny this article goes on about "PSX quality" gaming, when my 2003 N-Gage has been playing almost perfect ports of Tomb Raider and Tony Hawks for years...

Also, using an N-Gage in NZ is great - I don't think they came out over here and people look at you like you're some sort of alien.

Eh... I'm not excited about this at all.

Nowadays, phone models are tied to one carrier. Not with that carrier, and on a 1/2-yr contract? Pony up the cancellation fee to switch. Don't like that particular carrier? NO PHONE FOR YOU. Cellphones are rather pricey without subsidation, even if you wanted to buy the phone itself.

The way the mobile phone business runs is not ideal for a game centric device. Simply put, you alienate too huge of a potential customer base by being locked in with one carrier.

@BPMOmega XBL PSN Steam Look at the Nexus One. It was directed at a very specific audience, and did extremely well in that audience. If sony makes this phone unlocked, or makes GSM and CDMA versions for the carriers to subsidize, it could be a major success. Sony just has to be smart about it.

@Deegan The N1's original plan was to be on all major carriers. T-Mobile gladly took it. AT&T didn't want it, but since they use the same GSM network at T-Mobile, Google said "Tough" and put out an AT&T compatible version anyway, only available unlocked.
...Then they tried with the CDMA carriers. Didn't work as well. There are no unlocked CDMA devices out of the box, just devices approved for a certain network. Verizon and Sprint both said, "Thanks, but we'll take these other phones instead." And that was that.
So, if Sony is really going to do what Samsung's doing with the Galaxy S and hoping to get this on all major carriers, they're going to be doing some kind of serious dance routine.

You sir, deserve a plus for such an observation.

I agree, I want to be excited about this, 2 things in my pocket merging into one? And Android based to boot? Sweet!

But 1 thing get me, its "like" a PSP. Why can't we just get someone to make a psp, and put a phone in it, not the other way around? What it sounds like to me here is that all the psp games I've downloaded so far will be in no way compatible with this phone. This is one time I want to be wrong, as my phone and psp constantly fight for attention in my pocket and get all scratched up.

I like the concept but 2 things I don't like at all and probably would prevent me from buying it is

1 Don't like the touch pad idea for analog sticks

2 Sounds like it will be a seperate store from the PSN Store so any games I already have I'd probably have to buy again from a different Android service.

They should just take the PSP Go and make a phone from that. Add a second analog, make it touch screen and perhaps even make the back be able to slide upward for a QWERTY keyboard.

@KinseySS It will be integrated with PSN ,I can guarantee you that, this would be Sonys t&cs with Google, probably integrated with android market place as well.

"even make the back be able to slide upward for a QWERTY keyboard." -- I swear I shit you not, I have been thinking this exact same thing for a few months.. the psp-go flip controls was a complete given they have already done this and got it working, but like the Nokia N95 if you could push it out other end and a keyboard would pop out this phone would be just another level of effing insanity..
