I thought this was a dismal, distorted documentary.

You'd think chiptunes were invented in New York when some guy found a copy of LSDJ laying around. Presumably it landed from space.

No mention of the demo scene whatsoever, no mention of the creator of LSDJ or the years of chiptune music before a bunch of slackers decided it was ironic enough to like.

Hey, @ClydeRadcliff thank you for bringing this issue to light. The DVD actually has some new content to fill those gaps as well as an on-camera interview we conducted with Johan Kotlinski, creator of the LSDj software. Between the new featurette, RTP1.5, the additional/deleted scenes, and the commentary tracks, we feel this presentation of the movie paints a more complete picture. Thanks, again. - 2PP

@2PProductions
Egad, I didn't expect such a comprehensive response to my ill-tempered little rant. I'd of been a touch more diplomatic. ;)

I'd wondered if the 1.5 tag meant some re-balancing since the pitchfork release. Kudos for doing so, and thanks for the reply.

@Sally I don't get chiptune music either. But that shirt is still cool. I feel like musically chiptune stuff is better when it's supplementing a track rather then being the whole track or an entire album even.

@DJ Kenneth A Exactly my feeling. Which is why I love Anamanaguchi and find other chiptune artists to be kinda average at best.

I love 2PProductions' work on PATV and I love chiptune music, but I can't handle watching the non-gamer hipsters "dance" to the chiptune music.

I guess it is just harder to watch as an actual gamer because things like this feel like when you watch a celebrity on late night talk shows say things like "Oh yeah, I play video games. I'm a total video game nerd. One time I played Super Mario Bros. Man, I'm so hardcore I played Street Fighter II once! NES guys, am I right or what?"

That being said, that GameBoy shirt is really cool.

@koopaparatroopa22 this music isn't written for gamers. In fact, many if not most people within this scene (artists and fans alike) would never consider themselves gamers. A bunch of people that love and make this kind of music weren't even born yet when these consoles came out. We don't write this music for fat dudes who play wow in their parents basements, nor do we write it for tight pants wearing wearing, PBR drinking kids from williamsburg. But both of these people like this music, and all are welcome to the shows. Your comment makes about as much sense as saying you cant enjoy Pink Floyd if you're not a hippy born in the fifties.

And if you're mad about kids having fun and partying/raging/dancing at blip, then I hope you never attend a chip show and bring down the mood by sulking with your arms crossed in the back of the room.

(also, assuming your mindset won't change based off this one comment haha, you should probably look into/stick to the 'nerdcore' scene. you're 'gamers only' mentality will apply there.)

@boringname

Your use of the cliché stereotype of "fat guy living in parent's basement" to describe a gamer just further proves my point of being out of touch.

I would say it is actually the exact opposite of your Pink Floyd example. It is more a matter of don't go flaunting the GameBoy like a badge of honor when you completely downplay the culture surrounding its existence in the first place. You don't hear people saying "Man, Jimi Hendrix was really great at playing the guitar, but anyone who tries to play other types of music with the guitar is obviously a social reject living in their parent's basement."

I know a lot of the chiptune artists view the GameBoy as nothing more than their musical instrument, but their whole cool kids club of "dancing" around like they have spiritual Down syndrome wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the people playing video games on their musical instrument in the first place.

I've actually been to one of these "Chiptune" shows and the music is actually pretty good. That being said, as a live show, it wasn't too great. Watching guys hunched over a turntable/open Macbook is not exactly entertaining. Not to mention, the 90% hipster crowd who, not surprisingly in the least, attended...
