Can't agree more! Crytek needs to push the Cryengine more and Valve... Well Valve SHOULD have a new engine ready soon, and if they push that like they pushed source we could actually see the end of the Unreal 3 engine some day!

@Kurian

Yea the graphics can look good, but look at the facial animation of ANY CHARACTER in ANY UNREAL 3 game... THAT'S why the engine sucks!

And the texture streaming issues really annoy me.

If Bethesda needs anything, it's better tech. Glad to see they're taking their acquisition of id Soft seriously. It's not even funny how buggy Elder Scrolls and Fallout are. They could use a more solid foundation.

Awww. I rather enjoyed the days where everything was developed on an id engine. I find their engines to 'feel' better than any other out there.

Here's hoping Bethesda becomes a huge publisher in light of this. I want as many games built on id tech 5 as humanly possible.

I think this is a bad move for them, I understand Unreal 3.0 may look really good and Cryengine 2.0 seems to develop on 3 platforms at once each looking outstanding, but Id could still make a killing.

Thank. F@#%ing. God.
For as much as I've loved Bethesda, they have rarely excelled at the graphical part of their games. If I never have to look at one more wonky Fallout 3 character, it will be too soon. Can't wait to see the (even more-so) quality products they put out now.

Highly doubt id Tech 5 would be able to compete well with other engines in the FPS market when it finally gets released, but large map games similar to Fallout may benefit greatly.

I don't understand what they'd lose by licensing it. There will always be other great looking engines, so it's not like competing games won't get made. This only means that they no longer stand to make any money off of other people's games. It's not like people would skip over Bethesda games because they can get the same engine in another game, nor are graphics the primary reason why games become runaway hits.

If I were a shareholder, I'd be unhappy, because I think this in no way gives them a real advantage while cutting off a potential revenue stream.

Well it is a good thing Bethesda has no shareholders as they are a private company.

@aristokrat The problem is developing and polishing the dev tools so that they are easy to pick up for new devs, along with setting up staff to provide constant support to licensees.

That's pricey and resource intensive. Epic has spent a lot of time on this for years it seems (with one specific unhappy Norse mythological action game being the publicly dissatisfied exception).

id is still a small company, so what it probably comes down to is that they don't want to spend the time/resources to tidy up all the documentation and provide tech support to any licensee with a problem. Epic has made a real business with their engine and they have a ton of staff dedicated to exactly that.

Welp, I completely overlooked andysexton's post, who said the same thing but more clearly and seven hours earlier. Time to go to bed.

Well, between this announcement and the scoop up of Arkane, I sense something epic and unreal coming.

Screw Bioware, this is where it's at!

(Not to seem to harsh, I love Bioware's stories, but I've always found their gameplay to be horrendous. The Infinity Engine-style games were clunky, as were the KOTOR, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age style. Really, it turns into a chore to play them. I've finished the latter three on story alone, but man it got irritating. Someone has to agree?)

I thought DA:O felt clunky but I that's because its a newer game and seemed like it should have played more fluidly. Looking back on KOTOR...ya its clunky too but it didn't stand out as much.

@Untamed i actually really liked mass effect 1 and 2 gameplay wise. were they as good as, say gears of war? No. (again, gameplay wise). but compared to other top tier action rpg's (fallout 3 comes to mind) they are leaps and bounds ahead.

So sorry everyone for the off-topicness, but I haven't been able to express my anticiaption for BioShock Infinite.

My gosh, was I blown away with this news. I was hoping for a new BioShock, but I didn't think this new game would be it. I adore and love BioShock, so this is absolutely fantastic. The trailer was marvelous, and the concepts are fantastic. I'm one happy fan right now. Absolutely cannot wait for more news.

I can't wait to see some Elder Scrolls powered by idTech 5. I hope the id guys give Bethesda some pointers on modeling people's faces too ;)

People seem to be confusing "published by Bethesda" as meaning "made by Bethesda." Just because Bethesda is the publisher, just because game-x will used id tech 5.. doesn't mean it's going to be Bethesda quality.

All this news is saying, is if a developer wants to use the id tech 5 engine, they need to work out a deal with Bethesda, no id software.

To mean, what this means is, the Respawn Entertainment guys (you know, the real infinity ward) are going to either keep using id3 or they're going to use the unreal engine. Neither prospect is appealing to me.

So the next Fallout will be a corridor shooter with poor lighting? Awesome! I hated the huge outdoor environments anyway. And you thought the Fallout 3 physics were wonky? Wait until you see the crazy ID Tech rules... A huge metal desk = light as a feather, a huge metal desk with a styrofoam cup on top = immovable. And don't even get me started on the grenade physics.

No, I have not seen any Rage trailers. I've learned not to put too much faith in pre-release propaganda and to instead base my opinions on actual first-hand gameplay.

Effectively what Bethesda is saying, is that they are no longer going to bother letting Id compete in the engine licensing market... that must have went over well at Id since they pretty much built their name off of licensing out their tech, heh, talk about throwing in the towel.
