Guitar Hero project director discusses aiming for the 'core' audience
23
For better or for worse, Neversoft has decided to go a very different direction with the Guitar Hero franchise from its competitor, Rock Band. In an interview with Develop, project director Brian Bright explained that the the stark difference between the two games is intentional. "Rather than go head-to-head with our own games and our competitors, we decided we wanted to make something different."
Being tasked with developing three games in the Hero franchise simultaneously -- Band Hero, Guitar Hero Metallica and Guitar Hero 5 -- was a drain on the team's creativity, Bright admits. "We did make quite a few games last year ... But the release of all those games split the marketing team's focus, it split our studio's focus." The upcoming Warriors of Rock, however, represents a newfound yearning to go back to the franchise's origins, and deliver a game for "the core audience," the kind of gamer that loves guitar music, and has already mastered the plastic guitar. "The core has got to a pretty high level, so we really want to up the challenge." Developing a game that even franchise stalwarts would find difficult would set the game apart from the upcoming Rock Band 3.
It's somewhat fitting that Neversoft is paying homage to the franchise's origins, considering Warriors of Rock is supposedly the last Neversoft-developed Guitar Hero game. But will it be the end of the franchise? No way. "I think it's a given that there will be a Guitar Hero game every year," Bright said, perhaps relieved that his studio won't be tasked with that burden. Who knows? We may even learn more about the team's new shooter before Guitar Hero 7 finds its way to store shelves.

Do we really need a new Guitar Hero game every year?

Fire, Leather, Spikes, Skulls, and BC Rich inspired axes ... I consider myself a core audience for these types of games, that doesn't mean I want Metal shoved down my throat. Variety is the spice of life, so I'll stick with Rock Band 3, where I'll get plenty of Metal and plenty of Everything Else to satisfy my 'core' experience.

I think Guitar Hero is pretty much the definition of casual so I'm not even sure what 'core' means in this situation.

They're doing a damn fine job of enticing me. A full Soundgarden album AND 2112, I'm sold. If they have some more Dream Theater and Joe Satriani, I'll be playing this one for a long time.

Sounds like they have the right intentions, but will it deliver is the question. We'll have to wait and see.

Does the "core" really want a story with Gene Simmons narrating?

But... Rock Band 3 beats them out on the difficulty level by introducing fo-real(as in almost real) guitar parts. In the end, as long as that game uses a plastic controller it's still not going to be much of a challenge to people who have truly "mastered" it. People who are really good can play the highest tier songs all day and never fail. Putting more of those hard songs in there isn't going to make it more difficult for them. Seriously.

So basically Activision wants to get back to it's "origins" by releasing only one grame from the franchise every year instead of three?
If they want to appeal to the "core" gamers then the should be going from 3 games for every 1 year to 1 game for every 3 years.

I'm glad a game called "Guitar Hero" has decided the obvious in appealing to guitar fans. The focus needs to be on music that rocks. Not necessarily "metal," but certainly staying far away from Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas. 75 tracks that kick a$$ and take no prisoners. Classic rock from 1965-1995 should be the focus if they want to live up to their namesake. After that... music has gotten really watered down... with a few exceptions, of course, but to make a player feel like a guitar hero, the choices should be obvious.

One thing I'm really tired of in playing these games (I started late so I got a crash course and rented about 5 or 6 of them within a single month) is how they have a smattering of cool guitar tracks on the game disc and then if you want something better than the other pathetic pop songs included in the main game, you have to download them individually. It's their business model now to make sure the game itself isn't too good so you have to keep spending to have a quality product. This has kept me from buying any of their games. I just keep renting and sending them back after a week. If they want me to buy an actual game from them, they need to put more music in the main game that rocks and stop holding out on me by using so much filler.

@droppo I'm sure they intentionally put music in that doesn't fit droppo's taste, so droppo has to go any buy more music.
Or maybe they just put a variety of music in that they think will have a broad appeal and then let people buy what they want to supplement.
Chris, do you honestly think making an average game is anyone's intentional business model?

I fail to see how the half dozen games they released in the last year was a drain on their creativity when world tour was the only game that was any different from the previous 4 and even then all they did was rip off of Rock Band.

All fanboyism aside, before I was obsessed with Rock Band I was equally obsessed with Guitar Hero. So, thanks (to GH & joystiq) for introducing me to the genre.
Oh how naive I was:

Neversoft today is what 989 Studios was on psx, they took cool boarders, jet moto, and twisted metal just to name a few and kind of ran them into the ground.
