why are they pushing it so hard when we are over a year out from release?

@redking315 For real. I don't know if they have to put some PR out there to keep investors happy or what, but it is way early to be putting info out here. They do it for every game though, so I can't blame them. Even the next Bioshock isn't coming out til next year sometime...

@redking315 Because this is THEIR once a year conference. They're not going to keep silent about it until next year when the game's only a month from launch. If you have a big product coming, and you only have a loud microphone once in twelve months to tout it . . . YOU TOUT IT.

How is this any different from any other game being talked about? Diablo 3 has been announced for what... 2 years now? And we still don't even have a release date for it. Valve does the same thing.

1 year is not a long time to publicize (oh, and this game has been talked about for a lot longer than 1 year).

@chrisrackley you would just think though from the way they were pushing it at E3
that it was going to be a first half of 2011 not a second half of 2011. leave us a little to the imagination and then hit us with it all, don't give us the majority of the info a year in advance and then leave us to wait for it.

@liquidsoap89 but how much do we know about Diablo 3 at this point in time. Blizzard is letting a little here and a little there, just enough to keep wheting your appetite. but with RAGE, i thought at e3 and from watching the quakcon vids that that it was pretty much finished and in the last stages of development, not almost a year away.

I would say the amount we know about both Diablo 3 and Rage is pretty similar... Yea we've seen screenshots of Rage and a gameplay video or 2, but that's all we've seen from Diablo as well. And I don't want to use Diablo as the ONLY example, because we all know Blizzard takes their time making every one of their games, but I'm just saying that a year for Rage seems like a pretty appropriate release considering what we know (which isn't a whole lot...).

@Petebot330 Potentially. The fiscal year just ended, I believe. It's kinda weird, though. The game isn't going to receive nearly the amount at next year's E3 than it did during this one.

thank you very much xbox version for slowing production down.
i think this is the first time ive ever seen a company point to the xbox version being at fault and not the ps3 version.

@dargondarkfire I'm completely sure that the ONE crash it had during the presentation is the exact reason they're delaying it an entire year.

I really am.

@jynxycat Well, they explicitly say that the crash IS one of the reasons it's being delayed. So you are exactly right, though your sarcasm is exactly wrong.

I was actually thinking the same thing.
It was originally a PS3 exclusive, but Sony bumbled that one up too.
It isn't difficult to imagine it would be released much earlier if it weren't for the extra production time necessary for an X360 port.
But it all comes down to the bottom line, and PS3 exclusives don't sell enough copies to recoup the gigantic budgets of today's multi-million dollar, years-long AAA development cycle.
Sigh...

@dargondarkfire

Good god, look at all the misinformation.

Rage was NEVER going to be a playstation exclusive. Ever.

The crash happened during a loading screen, and they had admitted before the demo started that they had just made changes to the code 15 minutes prior.

In regards to, 'the xbox crash the cause of delay'- what a bunch of sensational bullshit.
Firstly, the game never had a release date... or even a release window. So nothing has been delayed.
Secondly, when the crash happened, they said 'a reason why we're not ready to ship yet'... but it was said as a joke and maybe AN example, as in ONE example. Not THE reason.
Plus, Carmack said they've made MOST of the decisions about the game. The way they talk about it is pretty telling that the game's content isn't even complete. A build changed 15 minutes before a show on a non-content complete game due for release over a year away? Give me a break.

Anyone at the presentation knows they weren't saying 'the xbox is to blame for the release date'.
Also, if anyone cares... the xbox version was loading noticeable faster than the ps3.
Not amazingly so, but it was noticeable. Both look and played identical though.

Although both were clearly inferior to the PC version. =)

@Tephlon um. i didn't say it was a ps3 exclusive.
i was also not at the presentation, and you just stated more then the article above.
i am surprised however that they were showing off the full game in progress code and didn't just make a demo disk. I would be afraid of someone stealing it. but hey if the team is so dedicated to this there working on it up to 15 minutes before presentation then i will view them with even more admiration, with a side of workaholicism (i don't think thats a real word).

i'm really looking forward to this game. it makes me feel like fallout and borderlands had a baby.

Sorry. I was trying to reply to you as well as JonahStein and Breakdown, but I forgot to add the additional @'s.

And yes, I'm sorry. I do realize that the much of the information wasn't in the article. So in that respect I'm just as annoyed by the articles' lack of clarity as some of the commentors' incorrect conclusions or incorrect information.

In the end, I guess I was just upset by the strangely negative tone of the article and comments, when the demo conveyed the exact opposite.
It's strange to leave such a wonderful presentation only to go online and find articles and comments that seem to contridict it.
A 'lost in translation' type situation, I guess.

That would be pretty dumb, though I could see why they want to skip the first half of the year (They'd get pwned by people who dont have Halo Reach yet, and Killzone 3)

3 or 4 months is NOT a year.

Also, this is id. I can GUARENTEE they will not sit on a game for this long 'just cause'.

The game is simply not complete. The CONTENT is not complete.

You might sit on a game a few months to meet a release window you want, but not a year.

devs that announce and hype games way out only serve to hurt themselves. the hype reaches such amazing lvls that almost no dev can match it. Plenty of perfectly good games have been hurt because of the hype surrounding them, FFXIII i'm looking at you.

I went to QuakeCon today in Dallas and watched the ID gameplay (multi console) of this game.
PC booted up first, XBox 2nd, PS3 third (PC much much faster, xbox and ps3 are a wash in terms of boot up speed for this game)
each game on each screen looked about the same, bright and well lit.
i watched the PC screen mostly.
This is a good looking game.
The biggest complaint I heard mumbles after the show was

"man, rage looks just like borderlands"

and I admit, they are pretty similar. You are in an area called wasteland. You can get a car (upgradable), and run over people and shoot.
its very similar, just prettier.
ID... ya'll need to play some borderlands and adjust accordingly.

@Golds

I can't believe you were actually at this presentation and still thought it was like fallout and borderlands.

While there's obviously similar environmental themes... everything else about this game is completely different.

Borderlands and Fallout are loot and western rpg's, respectively, and this is straight up classic id shooter. They have admitted that they regret showing off the vehicles so much... they aren't core to the gameplay. They want everyone to know that what IS there has a bit of depth to it... but the vehicles are about 15% if not less of the total game. Don't focus on the vehicles.

Fallout is a game about talking to people and VATS.
Borderlands is a game about collecting better gear and co-op.
Rage is about shooting people. That's about it.

It's ok for that to not appeal to you, but please stop comparing it to fallout and borderlands.
