APB developer Realtime Worlds may be laying off the entire Project: MyWorld team, according to reports from VG247 and Develop, with sources also alleging the dissolution of RTW entirely. One source apparently told VG247 that "The MyWorld team has been completely laid off. As many as 60 may have gone, but there's a rumor they may be trying to sell the team as a smaller entity." VG247 also alleges that "the Scottish developer is seeking to sell on APB entirely."
In early July, RTW announced forthcoming "redundancies" at its Dundee studio, specifically referencing a "second, unannounced project" -- now known to be Project: MyWorld. In a statement offered to Joystiq this morning, RTW echoed that earlier announcement: "Further to the press release issued on the 7th July announcing the post-launch restructure for APB and expected redundancies, the 30-day consultation period with the affected staff has ended. The supporting infrastructure for a game inevitably changes once released, and those staff that couldn't be redeployed to new projects in the Art, Audio, Coding, Design, Production, and QA departments have regrettably been made redundant. APB continues to be our primary development focus, and we remain fully committed to the game and its players." No specific numbers were given.
Realtime Worlds refused to comment on rumors of a full-studio closure or the possibility of APB being sold off. If you're an employee of RTW with more information, we'd love to hear from you.

Doesn't surprise me, APB is the kind of game that ends careers...

Does anyone think this game is going to be around much longer?

Probably for a good while longer. If anything it'll dwindle down over time. If they don't make drastic changes I can't imagine them gaining customers.

Taking development risks on the console side can still lead to some revenue. Taking development risks on the MMO side is suicide.

I still don't understand why people believe that APB is "massively multiplayer."

1. Sucks that this is happening. I meet some of the developers at PAX East and they were really proud of the game.
2. How is that a proper use of further (in the RTW statement)?

Should have went right to Crackdown 2 instead. I wonder what Crackdown 2 would be like if RTW had developed it.

Maybe Ruffian can pick these guys up. Give them 2 years to make Crackdown 3. Profit!

Such redundant use of the word "redundant".

Can't say anyone should be surprised by this. How ironic that this announcement comes a day after Crackdown 2 made the sales charts. RTW should have just stayed under Microsoft's wing.

This really sucks if it's true. Crackdown was an amazing concept, I just feel like RTW's vision was never fully realized. Just look at the jump between Just Cause and Just Cause 2... I think the same could have been done with Crackdown, which was a great seller as it was.

I'm not surprised. When Realtime Worlds mentioned they were making a PC MMO game after Crackdown, I thought they were absolutely nuts. MMOs can be great money, but not everyone is successful at them. And I couldn't understand why after developing a successful console game (and being involved in another successful console game) why they would sudden turn their back on consoles.
I thought I heard they weren't interested in making Crackdown 2, so Microsoft moved on without them. Then they came around later and said they would have made Crackdown 2. I dunno... shoulda coulda woulda. Should have been a no-brainer to make another console game after Crackdown.
