Developer GSC Game World has just revealed an official sequel to the popular first-person shooter, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, is currently in development. A statement on the developer's official site hints at console support this time around, stating a "completely new multi-platform technology developed by GSC will make the core of the game." So long X-ray engine!
"After the official sales of the series exceeded 4 million copies worldwide, we had no doubts left to start creating a new big game in the STALKER universe," said Sergiy Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World. "This will be the next chapter of the mega-popular game players expect from us." STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl launched in 2007 and was followed up by a prequel in 2008, called STALKER: Clear Sky. Earlier this year, GSC Game World launched STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, an expansion that continued the events of Shadow of Chernobyl.
STALKER 2 is currently slated to launch sometime in 2012.

Excited to play it on a console. I bought the first game and had to update to Vista to tinker with Halo 2 and the new gaming functionality (I HAVE A HARD JOB), but STALKER was never updated to work w/ Vista. So I never got much further than a couple hours in the game. :-/

I've never had any compatibility issues with Windows 7. All three STALKER games work flawlessly in 7 for me.

@Faenix It's a favorite series of mine. I've always wondered how STALKER will do on consoles, I think it would introduce a lot of new people to become potential fans and on top of that I wanna see the media react in a massive "this game is too hard it sucks" reaction the size of Devil May Cry 3, God Hand, (or in Joystiq's case) Left 4 Dead 2.

I didn't enjoy it. The concept and the setting was cool, but it's one of those games that just doesn't really work properly...

I was under the impression this would be another "expansion". Now that it's a numbered sequel, I'm a bit more excited.

I really trust that GSC Game World will not dumb this game down just for consoles. It can be fairly complex compared to other shooters out these days. They should just be able to adapt the control scheme to consoles, and keep the PC version the same. The EXACT same. No Regen please.
Anyways game of the 2012 for sure.

But think about all the advantages!
- a low-res blood JPG appearing when you take damage!
- cover system!
- no problems with getting ammo!
- achievements for using different weapons!
- knives instakilling every creature!
- fun items for Avatar and Home!
- facebook and twitter integration!
- microtransactions!
And the first hour of the game is going to be a tutorial, with the first words being "Move the left analog stick to walk."

I wouldn't say it's ruined, but I would've preferred it stuck with open environment gameplay. I'm sure it'll be a good linear shooter, but don't we already have enough of those?
And Crysis was mediocre? Have you played it? I thought it was pretty great, and the critics did as well--91 score on Metacritic.

@einhanderkiller; If you think it's great, that's great. I enjoyed it, I just thought it was rather mundane. Nothing to write home about except for the pretty visuals. The original FarCry was much, much better IMO.
Maybe mediocre was harsh, but it's certainly not one of the games I'd cry over losing.

Lets get those insane Collector's Editions over here this time. I had to import the first to from the Ukraine. STALKER patch, glowing artifact, branded zippo ligher, some poster things, a t-shirt, making of book(?) (in Russian) and bandana for like $130.

Uhhh. I found a blatant error.
"Earlier this year, GSC Game World launched STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, an expansion that continued the events of Shadow of Chernobyl."
You mean STALKER: Call of Pripyat. And it's not an expansion, it's a standalone game.

Bah! Pripyat was still an expansion. Just a standalone one.
What happened to GSC using Crytek 2?
