Team Fortress 2 update adds item trading, new game mode next month
44
If you thought Valve was going to cash out its stock in Team Fortress 2 after releasing an update for the game's ninth and final class, then you thought wrong. Speaking to PC Gamer, Valve's Robin Walker revealed that a mess of new content would be added to the game in yet another free update next month. Of course, after feeding "next month" through our inscrutable Valve Time Converter, that time period actually ranges between September 2010 and April 2035.
These updates will add around 20 items and weapons to the game, all of which come from the user-created Polycount contest winners. Unlike other community items, these will be playtested and balanced, and will have stats on par with Valve's equipment. Players will be also be able to trade items when the update goes live, one of the shooter's most oft-requested features. Also, a new game mode will be included in the update, though Walker remained mum on the particulars of this new gametype. Given our wide collection of beautiful hats, we're really hoping it's some sort of fashion show.

Valve is really squeezing the juice out of this game. I mean the game's been out for how many years now & they continue to pop out updates like every other week. Valve is really dedicated to their fans. Good job Valve :D

Really a contrast to the developers who put out a game, shit out recycled content for DLC for $15 each, then abandon it two years later to make another one, huh?

Blame Microsoft. They wanted to make Valve charge for EACH update. If they did, you could have bought 3 XBoxes by now.

Well Team Fortress 2 was put out on PC first so it's only right that they stick to that & maybe it's because people don't play it on xbox as much as PC people do (Considering they'd rather play COD or Halo & games like that). But they update L4D2 just as much as it's PC counterpart.

I only play the PC version (I can't stand playing shooters on consoles) but from what I understand it actually has a surprisingly healthy community on the 360 despite its lack of updates.
It is true that their loyalty will always be to the PC crowd though. They're definitely a PC first company. Thankfully.

@EnergyPigeon After they finish 'all' the updates on PC they are developing it all at once to bring out one big pack for the 360 for £10 or something because they don't want to charge a huge amount of money for individual updates like microsoft want them too.

No, actually, most of the updates for Team Fortress 2 would be considered a DLC.
An update adding new weapons, new maps, and new game modes. You don't call that DLC?
Valve has said over, and over, and over, and over why the XBox360 version doesn't have updates. They were already at the system's RAM limit for just the original game alone. They wanted to get all the updates done, then see how to optimize them to fit into the system's RAM.
On the other side, Microsoft wanted them to charge for each update. This already happened with Left 4 Dead. They put out an update that added new maps and modes, and they flat-out said they wanted it to be free to XBox users. but Microsoft wouldn't let them. Since the update required approval by Microsoft and space on their servers, they required them to charge. So the price was $5.
Valve doesn't lie. They don't talk bullshit to you, and treat you just like a customer who will simply buy up everything they release. They actually care about you. The shit they have done for Team Fortress 2 users proves that. They have even opened the game up to fan creations (what this update here is mostly about) and they have explained they want all updates to all versions of their games to be free. Microsoft said differently about the XBox360 version.
Hell, Valve has brought in 3rd party mod makers to work for them. Robin Walker, the head of the TF2 team created the original mod for Quake, and Valve hired him. They hired the Alien Swarm team, they hired the guy who made DOTA.
Unlike other companies, Valve actually cares about gamers. If you check out their website where they tongue-in-cheek poke fun at themselves that their fans are "more creative than we are, and if you keep it a secret so we keep our jobs, here's something for you" and do a thousand other funny little things, it's obvious they aren't your typical "buy our shit, then buy our next game, consumer" company. And there is no way in hell that they wanted to charge for the update, and Microsoft wouldn't let them. Hell, you can email Robin Walker himself, and he will answer you.

Oh, I would also like to add one more thing.
A gamer did a picture of the "Announcer". She doesn't have an official image in game, so this guy made one. It was widely circulated, and was very popular.
http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/File:Theannouncer.jpg
Valve liked it. They flew the guy to their office for a tour. Then they bought the rights to the picture, and made it the official character design of the Announcer. They even used it in their comics.
http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/File:Announcer.png
Valve is NOT your typical "money first, gamers and everyone else second" company like Activision.

If they released one DLC for 360, bringing the game up to speed to where the PC currently is, even at 10-15 bucks, I bet there would be a pretty noticeable sales spike in TF2/ Orange box.
Granted, a lot of it would be Re-Sale market, but it would still be a good move.

As a 360 player, let me tell you that if TF2 for Xbox received anywhere near the support it gets on the PC I would be all over it.
@Kyburz I'd heard that they were planning to bring something out after the Medic update, but there's been no news about it since the update came out. If we had to wait for "all" the updates we'd never get anything, although I fear that's going to be the case.

Because there were class changes, outfits are wrong, and some weapons are wrong.
This is the correct one.

It's incredibly annoying to some fans of the game because not only are some of the outfits flat-out wrong, but some of those weapons up there DON'T even exist anymore.
The Medic doesn't use a syringe anymore, he uses a Medigun.
The Scout doesn't use the SMG, the Sniper does.
The Demoman doesn't use detpacks.
The Spy doesn't use a tranquilizer.
Not to mention that there are some character models difference, too. The Medic doesn't have a grey/black hairline.
it's only annoying because three years after the game's release, website still use the beta image.

Three years after launch you think they could use something else.
It would be like posting early development shots of Halo, or Modern Warefare 2, and YEARS LATER keep showing those screenshots when talking about the game.

I was a little peeved at Valve over Left 4 Dead 2, but when it comes to Team Fortress 2, they are amazing.
They've added so much content, absolutely free. In this day and age, a company releasing so much free content for a game is pretty much unheard of.
