The internet is so cool, you guys. Check this out: Gamasutra recently did a feature on the XCOM first-person shooter reboot that's currently in development at 2K Marin. Julian Gollop, creator of the original X-Com: UFO Defense just happened to pop into the comments of said article to give his opinion on the current sorry state of the turn-based strategy genre, and revealing he's "now working on a turn-based tactical RPG which will be a 3DS launch title." Thanks, the internet! You're just full of surprises.
According to some investigation from TinyCartridge, Gollop's LinkedIn profile states he's been at Ubisoft Bulgaria/Sofia the past three years -- and Ubisoft has a turn-based strategy game titled Ghost Recon: Lead The Ghosts in the works for Nintendo's three-dimensional handheld. We've contacted Ubisoft to see if this cyclically-titled Clancy jam is indeed Gollop's next opus.

There's more colors in that screenshot than will be in the Ghost Recon game.
If it' anything like its console brother, that is.

@SnorlaxTheSerialKiller So much. I have fond memories of burning down farm houses with incendiary grenades.

I think he did that Rebelstar game on GBA a few years back. It was no X-Com, but it was still a wonderful game.

Could care less about the XCOM shooter until it hits super discount bargain bins or steam for $2.
But I would love to see a turn based Xcom game resurrected on the 3DS
A turnbased Xcom game on the 3DS would make my month1 purchase of a 3DS into a day1 midnight release purchase. Along with said Xcom game of course.
One can dream of Xcom for the 3DS.

Well there are two schools of though on the "I could care less"
The first being that its an indication that you care because there is the possibility that you could care less than you do, so by proxy......
The second (the one I subscribe to) isn't that I care by proxy, its that I don't care to such a degree that not caring about the game more than I already don't care about it, just isn't worth it.
So your looking at a literal vs more of an ironic take on the statement. So I guess in the future for clarification as that seems needed far too often I will add in for clarifications "but it isn't worth it" for those who just aren't on the same page.

Excited for XCOM, loving the 50s theme and it's association with ufology.

By the looks of it, the "reboot" is the kind were you always get stuck on a blue screen and the hard disc is making a pained, screeching noise.
I seriously want to find the soulless executive prick that demanded it be an FPS, and pound on his skull with hammers until I reach the tiny bit of brain steam that still has firing neurons, and make the world a better place by killing the miserable bastard.

X-COM is kinda dated (noted the hyphen). It's 'old and busted' as the kids put it these days.
I'm more into shorter experiences, and things like X-COM, Civ, and Sim City take up too much time.

The 'kids' can keep thinking that until their voices change and they learn to appreciate games that don't rely completely on twitch reflexes.

So 3DS games will or won't play on a DS Advance? I want X-Com but don't want to have to buy another console for it. And it likely won't be titled X-Com if I'm understanding correctly. Dammit! Just make a new updated X-Com for PC or existing consoles!

3DS is a new system, with superior graphics and processing power to the DS, along with expanded input and storage options and supposedly better piracy protection. Most of all, it will in all likelihood be "the new hotness". Why wouldn't a developer with sufficient budget rather make a game for it than its six-year-old predecessor?

I'm interested. I've never played the classic X-COM games, but if there's one genre I love me on a handheld device, it's SRPGs. I've never played a Western-developed one before, though.
Also, I hope Lead the Ghosts isn't the game in question, because I've got to be honest: that game looks like an early-life DS title. See for yourselves: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=21872645
