I'm not suprised, they did the same with the fat PS3's I got the 60, but they went frolm 20 and 60 to 40 and 80 pretty quickly.

it's probably cheaper to source 160gb drives now then 120gb.

@Prboi

Because it is replacing 120GB model, so tomorrow Sony will allow Retailers to discount 120GB model and sell it at any price they want.

You win either way.

Ugh. Wonderful. I was going to go buy a 120gb slim in an hour when I get off of work. Now I'll have to wait and see what this is all about.

At least you didn't just buy a 120GB model in the past three weeks like I did. Within a month after buying my 120GB model I've seen the 250GB model discounted to the 120GB price and a new 160GB model being released.

Makes me so mad!

But I guess if the only difference is the hard drive, I'm not too bummed. You can buy a 500GB hard drive for $50 and stick it in there if you really wanted to.

In other words, you can buy a 120 (or 160 now) GB model for $300, buy a separate 500GB hard drive for $50 and put it inside, getting you a 500GB PS3 for the same price as the 250GB PS3. Plus you'll have an extra 120 (or 160) GB hard drive laying around for an external drive. Just buy a $12 enclosure and you're good!

Here's hoping for 802.11n, that's pretty much the last feature I'm holding out for. I've committed myself to getting a PS3 on September when Move comes out, so I'm really hoping they come out with one that has 802.11n by then...

@Mach What will that do? Better wi-fi and such or what? I ask this because I really don't know, I'm not arguing, just curious.

There's no improvement on your internet speed between a "g" and an "n". The only difference is the range.

But if the larger range allows "more internet" to reach your ps3, would it not end up being faster?

@liquidsoap89 - I believe so, if you get higher percentage, it should mean faster internet connection. I seriously need a wireless N on my PS3, a few months ago I bought the 360 wireless N card (ouch, I know, $$$$) and it really does get signal pretty far away from the router, while my PS3's range dies at half that distance.

That's not true

Wireless N does have better range, but it also has a much higher transfer rate, I've had 480mbps through wireless N and never seen more then 54 on Wireless g.

Weird; it's not that much of an improvement over the 120, which I imagine they'll be phasing out in favor of the 160.

I wish they would release a hard drive-less console for around $200 (like the 360 arcade), because one of the things I envy about the Ps3 is that you can stick in a portable HD, (which would come in handy on my 20 Gig Xbox) which I would do if I got a PS3 anyway.

@GThang

I don't have a PS3 yet but I understand that there are many games that have mandatory installs. So if they sold one without a hard drive, it wouldn't be possible to play many games. They'd have to put some disclaimer on the game boxes.

On Xbox games aren't allowed to require hard drive storage to run, so they can sell a cheap hard drive-less SKU.

Well then I'll be waiting a long time then. I still haven't bought a PS2.

Honestly, if PS3 still had backwards compatibility I'd snatch it up now. Otherwise the only value to me is the three or so exclusive games that I want to play. All its other features (blu-ray, etc) are totally redundant in my setup.

Why the hate? I'm not trolling here, I'm trying to justify a PS3 but at $300 it doesn't make any sense. Surely I'm not alone in having an Xbox360 and an HTPC setup, and wanting a PS3 for its exclusive games.

Consider this, if you're a PS3 owner looking to justify an Xbox360 for its exclusive games. $200 gets you playing, you don't need frills on top. But for the reverse, an Xbox owner looking to justify a PS3 for JUST its games, its $300 minimum. And maybe you can justify it for bluray support, but then again maybe you already have that covered with a PC or dedicated player.

Don't have to wait that long. Just watch SonyStyle.com for their credit card specials. I picked up my PS3 about a year ago for $200 including a 2nd DS3 controller and the Blu-ray remote with free shipping.

you're making absolutely no sense - you don't have a ps2 but you'd buy a ps3 if it has backwards compatibility? sounds like you're just complaining for the sake of complaining (about the price).

What is so hard about this? PS2 compatibility would make it more valuable to me since I've never played PS2 games.

Well i was going to buy a PS3 today but im glad that I didn't. If they add more than a 40 GB HDD boost, like 802.11n then i might pick up the 160GB version. If not ill look for a discounted 120 GB version.

why are the bigger hard drive ps3's so popular/important? you can swap the hard drive to whatever you want.
1) buy the cheapest ps3
2) buy whatever size drive you want
3) ???
4) profit
