According to Gamasutra, Limbo – which kicked off the Xbox Live Arcade Summer of Arcade last month – has sold over 300,000 units. The outlet spoke to Jeppe Carlsen, level designer for Limbo, who discussed some of the design philosophy behind the game. Carlsen noted that the team had a few goals that Limbo had to adhere to from the beginning, including the overall mood and the decision that it would contain no tutorial text whatsoever.
With many of the game's puzzles punishing a player at the slightest misstep, Carlsen stated that "it's important that you also treat him nicely." In other words, while death is frequent, it's also entertaining and educational. Ideally, players learn something about the puzzle with each death.
Another philosophy: Make sure the correct solution is "fairly easy to execute" and that incorrect solutions are obviously wrong. Making incorrect solutions obvious aids players in discarding them from other possible solutions, nudging them toward the correct one. After all, there's no better motivator than grisly death.

I absolutely loved this game. The atmosphere was great and I was actually nervous in a lot of the beginning stages which is a first for me when playing a game. Yay for playdead.

Totally agree! I don't exactly want to buy a 360 just for this, but it IS really tempting!

Don't worry, it'll probably come to PC and PS3 eventually.

Why are we fanboys for wishing a 360 exclusive game would come to the ps3?

It's not being bitter, it's fact. I think some people still like to argue that games like Limbo only benefit from the extra advertising and would flop without it.
That opinion is totally false. Games like these reach popularity in spite of their comparatively small studios behind them. And if you need proof of how games sell when they go multi-plat, I can think of a couple.

For some reason I can totally see Limbo being on the PC for some reason. Like that is where it truly belongs.
@liquidsoap89
I dunno it just came across me that you and Wiizer are fanboys. (More Wiizer than you) It just appears that way to me. Sorry no offense.

If it wasn't a Summer of Arcade exclusive, I doubt it would get as much publicity on the systems where the *shudder* casuals could see it. We the Joystiq readers would know about it, but no one else would. Therefore, I conclude that the exclusivity helped it more than hurt it.

Yes? But that isn't really answering my question. I know Limbo and Lara Croft are exclusive, but I don't know what the other summer of arcade games are, and I don't know if they're all exclusive to the 360 or not.
I'm curious because if they don't have to be 360 exclusives, then I doubt they would lose very much (if any) sales being multiplatform. Obviously if they have to be exclusive to be on the summer of arcade thingy than developers would have to consider the pros and cons of such a deal...

More importantly, you have to be 360 exclusive (or PC) to be published by Microsoft. Finding a publisher is much harder than you think, and if MS was willing to publish Limbo in exchange for exclusivity, good for them. Both sides make money and this indy gem gets some exposure. Win/Win.

I see! Thanks for that. It's still a shame that the game isn't coming to the ps3 though... Pretty hard to buy a digital game for a console that you don't own.

This game was a refreshing change. I liked how you just kept going and going and never really felt that "state end" moment. If I had any complaint, it would be the length being too short.

I know I was a bit short sighted in my comment there and it probably should be directed at the publishers who get to pick what games are green lighted etc. rather than the developers who I'm sure are dying to get some of the more experimental and artsy game ideas seen by the masses.

I was blown away by Limbo in essentially every sense, except the Avatar awarded creature. Was it actually in the game? I don't remember.

I will add to those sales when it comes down to $5 or $10.
And it should have been on PS3 and Steam, but I guess being in the summer of Arcade was more important to them.

@2Slick 'Hated' is a tad harsh.. I didn't get any sense of progression with the constant deaths.. felt like something I'd make.. epecially after one of my LBP levels that no one has beaten yet, I even nerfed it until I could ace it after going through Limbo (still no one else has beaten it)

Excellent game! I just beat it Sunday, without using a guide. I actually feel proud.
Really deep game. I think it necessary for the character to get gruesomely slaughtered every death. It added to the atmosphere.
If you haven't picked it up, you would do yourself a favor if you did.
