For regular PSN users, you have to sit there & wait for your download to finish instead of starting the download it & then you can do whatever you wanted while it's downloading. Only PSN+ subscribers have that option. Sony said they wouldn't take any features away that original PSN users had yet they did it anyway.

Sony is more well known than Microsoft when it comes to entertainment. They have their own TV's, computers, Blu-Ray players, pretty much every piece of entertainment, Sony has it. That's why companies are sided more with Sony than Microsoft.

Yes, Blu-Ray is the only reason why Sony even has a lot of first party companies. Blu-ray allows more technical stuff to be done because of its space& more things can be done with it. If Microsoft had an equivalent to Blu-ray, the only thing that would really decide where companies go are GPU, CPU, software & money of course.

but i don't need to wait for a game. i play other games while downloading others. so the things your saying are just telling me that you've never seen a ps3 while downloding

Microsoft has done good hardware, the original Xbox never once broke on me. It was a perfect system, had the online games I wanted to play for it. I got the RROD on the 360 twice in almost 6 years of it's release. Sony has had extremely faulty hardware as well, the PS1 and PS2 had huge failure rates. Sony even went as far as blaming consumers for their hardware mistakes with the PS1, then six months later they made a hardware revision.

The PS2 had huge problems with it's DVD drive. The lens would die frequently, the system would stop turning on. Launch day systems were the absolute worst out of any of the PS2 models. And more and more people are getting the YLOD with the PS3, so Sony are not immune to hardware failures and have their fair share of pretty faulty hardware in the past (despite being a leader in hardware manufacturing at the time).

@Prboi as athesto said, that's only system updates. Plus users can't background download updates, only automatic update during the night when they're not suing their ps3, and even then, you still have to manually install it once you turn it back on. I never noticed any change in normal background downloading before I got plus, and I got plus over a week or two after it was out. Automatic updates only downloads updates, stuff you can't background download.

@BlackedOut you do realize out side of the gaming divisions Sony & MS actually have partnerships right??? Sony TVs and Vaio laptops were featured in the WINDOWS 7 ads. so i wouldn't totally discount MS not licensing the bluray tech at some point

@BlackedOut

"Paying a direct competitor (amongst several other companies) royalties upon the success of its own platform just isn't Microsoft. They have too much pride, and it isn't good business. "

I'm sure its already been said but I will say it again.

Blu Ray is NOT purly sony technology. For some reason people seem to think that blu ray = sony but its not true. Sony ARE on the board of the blu ray assosication but they are not he only ones

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Association

"The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is the industry consortium that develops and licenses Blu-ray Disc technology and is responsible for establishing format standards and promoting business opportunities for Blu-ray Disc."

If you look there i am sure some of the companies on the board are companies that MS already do business with.

You will not see blu ray on the 360, simply because having 2 different physical disc formats for one console is a bd idea as publishers will end up having to launch on both. You will see it (or its successor) on the next gen of consoles.

No the next gen of consoles will not be donwload only before someone pipes up, internet speeds are still nowhere near the level needed to download blu ray ammounts of data in any resonable time. Just because you have a 20-50MB connection doesn't mean everyone else does, average speed in the UK is still around 4 MB.

@Thrasher666 Yes, Sony did make it clear this is what would happen at the end of a PS+ subscription. However, to my knowledge, none of you have the luxury of seeing what that actually looks like. It's good to know that Sony makes it rather easy to repurchase expired content, if you want to keep it.

Hmm, PS3 related, but has a PS3 Slim 160GB been announced? I decided to check Gamestop.com and they had it there as "Just announced"

Weird though, because it's the same price as the 120GB model, so that might get a price drop soon, or get replaced.

Random: The second explanation of how to shut off the auto-billing seems unnecessary.

On Topic: THANK YOU for pointing out that PSN Plus is set to auto-renewal. While I am currently liking the service, I have a feeling once I get my 360 (Halo: Reach bundle :) ) I might not want to continue the service ($100 a year in online services just seems excessive).

PS+ sucks, but at least it' s not an integral part of the experience like XBL is to the 360. So if you don't like it, it's not a big deal, you're not missing out on anything.

I will never pay a subscription fee for a game or gaming service. It's a racket.

@AnderFREAK I thought that at first too, but I randomly decided to buy it the first month, and I've actually enjoyed it quite a lot. I got 15 months for $50, and considering I'll have gotten 60 games by the time those months are up, it's not a bad deal. Especially if you haven't purchased many psn games before, it's great. The idea sounded dumb to me when I first heard it, but it's actually pretty nice to have it now, and some of the games (like critter crunch) are actually surprisingly fun.

Everyone knew the first day they announced this that you could only play your free games as long as your PS+ subscription was active. Why is this news?

Oh, and look, a dig at firmware updates. That's so original.

Maybe if some of you 'gamers' turned on your PS3 more than once every few months you wouldn't always have to update every time you turn it on.

Sheesh.

This is why you should purchase physical media over downloadable games (mostly PS1/PS3 games) because only then will you REALLY own it. When you purchase download-only items, you're subject to having it taken away at any time. You don't really own it. If this was part of the user agreement when signing up for Playstation Plus, then I feel sorry for anyone who can't play any of the games they've purchased.

@29A yeah, but it's not bad when you consider that you do get to keep _some_ of the stuff you get, and that you get way over $50 worth of content anyways. Sure, you have to renew to use it games, but it's always going to be cheaper to renew ps+ then it is to buy even a quarter of those games. I got 15 months for $50 (3 free months for signing up now). I get 4 free games every month (so far I have critter crunch - a psn game, like 3 games that can be played on a psp or ps3 that are minis, and then syphon filter - psone classic.

Critter Crunch is like $8 or something, Syphon Filter is like $6 or $7, and those minis are probably a few bucks a piece. (Note that one mini was gotten this month, so that's why there are 5 games so far). So, say each mini is $3. Now let's say i only have the first two from the first month. Add all the games from the first month and i have somewhere around $22 in games.

That's $264 worth of games in a year, or $330 for 15 months. That means i'm paying a fifth of what I get every year. Now consider that if you have this for 2 or or 3 years, you'll have over a hundred games and have saved tons of money on games, and then have gotten bonus avatars, free add-ons to psn games, themes, etc.

When you add it up, you're always going to be saving money no matter what. Some of the games might not be too great, but even if you dislike a third of the games, you're still saving money, and now I can spend time getting trophies on Critter Crunch, a game I never would have discovered if it weren't for ps+. I don't mind having a yearly fee for content, it beats paying the same for online with xbox live, where even the hard copies I do own of games aren't fully mine without a fee.

They mentioned Critter Crunch as a game made free as a rental as part of PS+, but I think it was actually made free via a 100% PS+ discount. I can't say for sure, but when I look at the info for Critter Crunch, it doesnt have the "days remaining" timer, like most other free PS+ content does.

Also, for those of you debating PS+'s value, it may be worth mentioning that you get free access to Qore as a PS+ member. It doesn't count as a Qore subscription (you get free single episodes, thus any subscriber-only content that Qore decides to keep for itself would probably not be available to PS+ members), but it's still an extra chunk of value.

@snl25

While Sony may have it's share of hardware failures, does anyone believe that the totals from PS1, PS2, and PS3 surpass the number of RROD issues? I don't know of anyone that has had a Playstation issue personally but everyone I know has had multiple RROD problems. Even casual 360 owners, like my father-in-law that hardly plays, has had a RROD problem. I'm not saying that Playstation hardware problems don't exist but that they're significantly less common in comparison. Props to MS for stepping up like they did but that wasn't enough to warrant me investing in a 360 till the issue was permanently corrected.

@Prboi

I intend to purchase a 360 as I already have a fair amount of 360 games. I was waiting for them to drastically lower the price or fix the RROD issue which the slim appears to have done. So I'm one of the new adopters you mentioned and I do not plan to subscribe to Live. There's probably a decent amount of us. However, given the two systems I can't see why someone would choose a 360 over a PS3. Initially, the PS3 had a heavy price tag that might have been tough for kids to get but it was a better value even then. Add up a few years of a Live subscription, a blu-ray player, a wifi adapter, built in full BC, etc

You've already mentioned that MS will come out with their own format to compete with blu-ray but lets not forget HD DVD. PS+ seems like a value especially when compared to Live. It's hard to beat free games. Even old ones that expire on PS+ expiration. Not to mention free access to Netflix and HULU subscriptions that regular PSN users get (or will get).

I don't understand cross game chat but it seems like something targeted at kids. Maybe someone could explain it but it sounds like it would let me play God of War while talking to a friend playing Uncharted. Why? I feel that would just interrupt my gaming experience.

Game of Fame? Really? I get to play Ozzy Osbourne in MW2? Again, I could only see kids being interested in this. Wait, Megan Fox too? I'd rather play with my real life wife.

Community Playdate? My children go on playdates. Notice a pattern.

How-To's? Will they show you how to swap out you HDD with a larger aftermarket one like you can with the PS3?

Does MS have some online features that Sony could learn a thing or two from outside of the meager list you provided? I'm certain . MS has been at it longer. Do those features warrant $50 bucks though? Both systems have different online strategies (and apparently targeted user base) but to say that one is "going to tank next generation" is a bit premature.
