@daevv i agree this game was an absolutely great experience and everyone should play the "game" but i do have to say that i had a scene with mild nudity, parents out there who are concerned be warned.

@Jacksy well they could import the japanese version which modified the shower scene (just used diffrent camera angles to remove the nudity), but i wouldn't think anyone would go through that much trouble.

@Jacksy the game is about a violent serial killer and you're worried about a shower scene? I'd much rather warn about the violence. Just an interesting thing I noticed, people tend to focus on nudity over violence in games.

Either way- amazing game and I'm so happy for Quantic Dream they deserve all the success!

People tend to focus on nudity over violence mostly in the US, it seems. I think it's somewhat of a cultural thing.

I tried the demo but I didn't like it. I may give it a proper go, once it hits the discount bins.

The demo did not do the game justice. The demo was merely displaying how the game is played but the best part of the game is not how it is played, it is about the mystery and suspense of the story along with the decisions you have to make and the consequences that follow.

The game is truly unique and definitely deserves a play through from any gamer.

How it is played is probably the worst part of the game. Do yourself a favor if you are on the fence; wait for move support. Move is how this thing was meant to be experienced for sure.

My fingers still get cramped thinking about the power plant scene.

That's what I thought.

I wonder how many they would have sold with the better Euro-art?

Probably the same.

I wish they would give us reversible covers for the games that have different cover art in Europe. US style on one side, Euro on the other. I know most cheap ass publishers (i.e. EA and Activision) leave the inside cover white/blank to save money but Sony published games usually have some nice designs on the inside cover so it shouldn't cost more.

There's something I don't quite understand about this article. Why would strong sales present a problem when paired with little spent on marketing? Isn't that a really good thing?

@GrandpaMasaki I think he meant that sales could have been even better if the expectations were higher initially, or that they could have capitalized on the high sales if Sony was willing to reinvest in the marketing once they saw the game could sell even without it.

@KyleOrl I was thinking maybe the Marketing Department was peeved because they missed an opportunity to have a higher budget. Regardless, I think the fact that we just proposed three possible explanations shows that this comment needs to be elaborated...

@GrandpaMasaki maybe not enough units produced, expecting bad sales they made a much smaller run for the us ? Thats how I interpreted it initially.

They are saying that there was a missed opportunity to create a blockbuster title like God of War 3 which sold over 800,000 in the US within its first week.

Translation:

Cage thinks that American gamers won't buy games if the game doesn't go: "pew, pew, die, respawn, pew, pew".

And he's probably right.

Because Sony didn't market Uncharted, or inFamous, or Little Big Planet, or Motostorm, or give long leashes to the likes of Team ICO or Polyphony Digital.

The game was a hard sell, and it's hardly in Sony's best interest to take marketing dollars away from established genre games. In the end, it was still Sony who took a chance on a game nobody else was picking up and paid for it's development.

* DING Trophy * Thanks for supporting Interactive Drama !

anyways i bought the game day one from Gamestop ( pre-ordered ) here in Canada i went too look for the copies on the shelf but saw none and i was standing their saying .. did it get a 1 day delay ? I walked up too the Employee and said i'm here to pick up Heavy Rain, The guy grabs it from underneath the counter and i was like what the hell did they sell out that quick i don't see it anywhere on the shelf.

The employee responded, Well the game is part of a Niche Gaming Market this is a first of it's kind and no one really knows about this title. I said so it's not as big as other titles that's why you didn't order as many and the guy said, Yes we didn't wanna be stuck with alot of copies not selling and it's not like Grand Theft Auto or Halo or Mario

anyways I know David Cage said no more of this type of game will be made as it was his last one. but i'm wondering if it was his best selling game he's made ( not sure what the sales are for his other games ) but I hope he takes this as a sign and does another Game like Heavy Rain ( maybe with some returning characters ) and have it be another Murder Mystery.

Go pick up Heavy Rain it's a wonderfull experience !

I'm not a fan of "QTE" games, and this one is pretty much all QTE, however, the way it was handled in Heavy Rain was enjoyable.

Since I borrowed the game, it's not worth for me to pick up (I'm really not THAT interested in seeing all the other endings) - however, if a sequel were to be released, I'd buy it day one. Especially if it means more video game boobies :)

I'm glad this game was a success as clearly a lot of hard work went into it. I would never ask for a sequel to Heavy Rain 2 as it just wouldn't make sense storywise, but Quantic Dream (and more developers) need to make more games in this cinematic style. Heavy Rain was a breath of fresh air among all the repetitive shooters and open world action games that have come out in the last couple years.

I started playing this game in front of my sister, who is not a gamer in any sense of the word, and she got hooked and would not let me stop playing! She had no interest in playing it herself, but enjoyed watching it and calling the shots when it came to making contextual decisions. I ended up playing it for her in 3 long sessions at which point she became obsessed and started reading about the plot and different endings on the internet. I told her about the MOVE version coming out soon and she wants to play through it herself using move.

My point is, Heavy Rain is a special game that captivated a person who has the remotest interest in video games because it's such a solid, cinematic and dramatic experience. I only wish the voice acting was better.

That's a heart-warming story.

Seriously though, people who don't normally game get excited about movie-like sequences (same thing happened with me and the roommates while playing MGS3 a while back), it's all about getting them in front of the t.v. to understand where it's all coming from and why video games are a compelling for of entertainment vs t.v. and movies.

im holding off for the move support (and more cash).

according to the figures here, sony only expected to sell ~100k of this game in that states? lifetime? that seems pretty low-ball estimate IMHO. 400k is respectable for such a new IP/niche genre game. not surprised that more of the sales came from europe though...
