Dragon Age 2 'Destiny' debut trailer tears us apart
51
The debut trailer for BioWare's next, arguably even bloodier installment in its newest RPG franchise, Dragon Age 2, recently saw the light of day during EA's Gamescom press conference. Though trailers for the first installment focused on the game's menagerie of protagonists, this clip focuses on just one: Hawke, the spear-staff wielding badass who can apparently hold his own in a fight against the burliest of demons. Then again, when you can summon demon hands to literally rip enemies in twain, we suppose your fighting prowess isn't all that important.

Hmmm... well we'll see how this shapes up. The trailer looks impressive but it's a real shift from the original design concept. I just am curious if they are going to integrate any of the decision making elements from the previous game in to the new game (like with Mass Effect 2.) One can only hope, I've poured hundreds of hours in to that game, I'd like some of the decisions I made to have an impact.

They said there will be carryover, and this time you can play the first and second games on two differnt platforms and still experience the changes. I wonder how that will work. (A survey at the beginning, e.g. "So what's the king's name again?" ?)

@Deschain True, but some of it added a really neat layer. In the case of some instances it changes entire sections of game play. For example, the Krogan home world, I was able to save Rex, my friend wasn't so we had a quite different experience there. Any how, fingers crossed they are able to carry it forward well. :-)

@Sam406 Thats one of the changes they made...part of the reason you can't be a dwarf or an elf.

They could have had different voice actors for each race. What I'm really saying is why can't I be a dwarf mage in DAO?

Bioware has done an amazing job keeping this franchise on my mind since launch. Continued support, new add ons, and now this. I'm looking forward to wasting a hundred or two hours on DA2.

These cinematic trailers are cool and all, but it would be nice to see some gameplay. I mean I already knew I'd be a white, brown-haired hero fighting the Darkspawn. Thanks, EA.
*Actualy I'm kind of screwed. I was a red-haired Dwarf named Stanislav and then I was a black-haired hot Elf woman.

Here's hoping they give you better character creating tools for your avatar. Every character I tried to make in the first game had these chiseled cheek-bones and pointy noses with obnoxious flared nostrils. If not, at least the stock character looks good... well, better than the stock Commander Shepard, anyhow. ("Hi I'm Bobby Baldo, from the planet Baldar, and I approve of this haircut.")

Here's hoping there's a proper battlemage class, judging by the video. I should be able to wield a sword and use magic as well if I want to.

I think that Bioware (all the studios) are making some of the best computer animation out there. Between this, the Mass Effect 2 trailer and the Star Wars: TOR trailers it's better than most action blockbusters.

@shimrra74 you should be good to play it on your PC. It's a far better experience on the PC. The console version is practically broken.

As someone who has spent many many hours playing through the 360 version, as well as most of the DLC and the expansion, I highly disagree that it's "broken".
The PC game is more like the older PC games that Bioware made, the console versions has a typical third person camera view, and it works just fine..

...I wonder if he's related to Morrigan. That would really make my day if he turned out to be a son of a witch.

@BrokenCage That is the only relevance this could have to the 1st 1. Without it I don't see the correlation they could make a whole new franchise.

No, he wont be the son of Morrigan. This game literally has nothing to do with the DAO/Morrigan Arc. They clearly stated that this game happens while the Warden Commander (Hero from DAO) was rallying troops against Logain and the Darkspawn. The Hero of this new game; Hawkes, is a survivor of Lothering (remember the village that gets consumed and burned by the Darkspawn, where you meet Leliana) When the Darkspawn invaded it he managed to escaped and headed to the Free Marches, in where this new game's story will develop. Grab the July Issue i believe of Game Informer where they explain all of this xD

Did they just do away with different classes or have they merged them. If i can summon the hands of the devil to snatch people apart i may love this game.
and side note if i get head butted by a dude with ram horns he won the fight..

It's an impressive trailer but I still have my doubts about gameplay - all that MassEffectification has me worried. Having said that, it would be a huge plus for the game if, based on the trailer, they implement some cool spear combat. Not a lot of spears in RPGs and the ones that do have them usually relegate them to "poking" actions - I'd love to see spear as part of the weapons arsenal in DA2 and with some cool combat animations to boot, a la the trailer.
