European developers rally to help ex-Realtime Worlds employees
17
It's when things seem at their darkest when the true light and goodness of humanity can really shine through ... or something like that. Following APB developer Realtime Worlds' decision to go into administration -- and the 75 percent staff cut the studio was forced to undergo -- fellow game developers Codemasters, The Creative Assembly, Blitz Games Studios, Activision and Sony Europe have announced recruitment events in the coming weeks to help the displaced staff get back on its feet.
There should be plenty of openings to go around for the 185 unemployed artists, writers and programmers -- Codemasters alone is reportedly looking for 150 new hires to fill its UK studios and The Creative Assembly is staffing up to work on an "unannounced AAA title" for Sega. Not to be outdone, Activision's also making a huge hiring push -- though these unfortunate souls will be relegated to the dance cages located in the foyer of Bobby Kotick's Miami-based "party palace." (Fine, we made that last part up. Please don't sue us.)

what about the other people that have been let off over the passed year? There was no big rush for them. And now a company that made a fail of a game and started to go bankrupt within 1 month of releasing it and everyone has to save them?

So because their game flopped, they deserve to lose their jobs? The majority of their team was let go so these other development groups are trying to help these people. This is a good thing. Just because they didn't rush to every single lay off doesn't mean they can't help this group.

Although this may sound altruistic and all, these companies gain a lot from hiring already competent staff. Think about it. They'll have to spend much less on formation, and the human resource department will save tons of money by not having to spend time looking for professionals.
Videogame companies are always fighting for talented people, so when tons of them are free, it is to their advantage to jump on all these skilled workers before anyone else does.
They really are like vultures feeding on the (almost) dead corpse of Realtime Worlds.

However, this is in some way bad news for recent Uni Grads hoping to get a job in the sector. The same thing happened to a lot of my batch last year when studios shut down and some jobs that graduates would have gotten were taken by ppl who had about a years exp. It resulted in a lot of us takin up jobs in other sectors. However, they pay better then the games jobs.. :D
Anyway, all the best to everyone out there whos been affected..

You get a dollar after they get your credit card info. Then on your next bill you see a bill for $5,000 to ipal.com.

I never knew it was altruistic to actively try to hire talent.
Maybe I'm just too cynical...

I would love to work for Ed Del Castillo in the next Rise of the Argounauts, he's the ugliest guy in the industry, and just looking at him makes my day.

Unless they're working on something big or gearing up to release a game sooner than later, most developers aren't hiring, iirc.
So it's quite possible, they are being altruistic.
