Gears of War 2 bonus XP weekend requires some long division
32
Gears of War 2 executive producer Rod Fergusson recently revealed on Twitter that folks who play the shooter's multiplayer component over Labor Day weekend will be treated to a little something special. Yes, Epic is rewarding players with yet another extended weekend of bonus XP -- though this time, the value of the multiplier is being determined in a decidedly sinister manner.
Fergusson revealed that the number of people who Like the official Gears of War page on Facebook will be divided by 1,000 to determine the XP multiplier over Labor Day weekend. At the time of this writing, that figure is sitting at a little over 14,800 users, which should result in a hefty experience boost. Of course, taking the planet's current population into account, you could easily bump that multiplier up to 6.8 million times the standard XP rate, provided you're willing to do a great deal of word-spreading.
[Thanks, Richard!]

@Uncontrol I agree, the company is asking for our help and giving us something in return, sounds like a win-win to me.

I just realized this game is 19.99 new! I really want a 360, but you know. . . this really make it all the more painful.

...but in all seriousness, we hope you don't have to do long division to divide by 1,000.

Yeah, it's really just nerd cred, although I get what you mean when it comes to weapons/unlock a la CODMW/MW2. I'd rather the rank only be used to decide who you're paired with, anyway. When the rank unlocks weapons it seems to unbalance things a bit. Like Chris said, it's all just geek cred anyway.

GoW2's levels mean achievements! Of course, those don't really mean anything either, but like Chris said, whatever's relevant in your mind.

they just did a big bonus XP weekend a little while ago and it was so painful to get into and play matches that I bailed after about an hour with only 2 actual games played... it was kind of a bummer because I was totally ready to give GoW2 Multiplayer another shot.

@Archr5 You probably tried the ranked matches. Try social. It snags one host and carries players into new games, cycling the maps. No penalty for leaving early, and under 60 seconds between matches.
To everyone else, I happen to be one of the lone wolves out there, trying to carve out a 100 rank. At 73, this is good news. There's a point in some games where sheer bull-headedness kicks in and you realize its a challenge. For me, this dumb 50 point achievement and little icon next to my name is one of those.
Say it with me: You're a tool.

Does the bonus xp count for horde also or only xbox live public matches?

To bad it doesn't really matter? Are they just tryin to keep people interested? Design some Dlc

@SelfproclaimedNerd That's the thing, they have given the game LOADS of DLC with loads of added cheevos and trophies, and have changed a good deal of the online structure to have their current XP ranking system like it is. Helps people get some acheivements before the next game comes out, which is a big deal to some. Is the general multi broken? Yes, but luckily you can just play Horde, which in itself is a joy to play and nets some good XP.

@SelfproclaimedIt keeps people coming back. & it actually makes it more fun because more people come back who aren't assholes who come back for the same reason you do & you can just have a good time ranking up with one another. & most of the time the noobs get on too so it won't be as annoying if you get killed a lot. It works out for everybody

Looks like I'll be able to hit 100 a third time. I wish they never added ranks, they mean nothing. I reset mine all the time so it says I'm a level 1. The other team thinks I suck until I shotgun them all lol.

Not only is this Epic for the extra XP, but usually when these kind of events happen, they have a tendency to change up horde a little. Yeeeeessssss

This could easily go over the XP during the Comic-con, which would be even sweeter. But i wonder what kind of changes they have in store for us.
