Metal Gear Solid Rising doesn't cut out pacifist play style

Konami revealed at Gamescom that it will be possible to have a "no kill" game of Metal Gear Solid: Rising, much like you can in previous Metal Gear Solid games (which reward you with high ranks, or, in the case of Metal Gear Solid 3, stealth camo). Of course, those Metal Gear Solid games in which it was possible to do that also had tranquilizer guns. Does Raiden have a tranquilizer ... sword?

"When you encounter human resistance you can slice their weapons in half, causing them to run away in fear," IGN explains. "If you accidentally slice off a hand or two, well, that will be forgiven, we are told." So even if you choose to play that way, you still get to slice a lot of things with your sword. That's a relief! The game is also full of mechanical enemies and watermelons, which can all be safely sliced without damaging your no-kill status.

You get a lot of special reverse blade sword moves, but first you have to kill your master, Sajiro Hiko/Big Boss style.

(or you can fail and get like...90% of the moves ala Kenshin, while dooming the sword style to extinction)

Yeah, all guys do that. It's normal, natural, healthy, and helps relieve stress. You shouldn't be ashamed of it, unless you're 'cutting your hand' loads of times a day. Then you're just weird.

@Voshempa Yeah, Raiden recieves the Blade later in the story, and it has a limited amount of use. You can also train with it in the VR mission in MGS2: Substance.

Very cool then. And, no, I've never played as Grey Fox. I was still on the boat when I left MGS2. I've got the evening free tonight and will be playing it so here's to all that.

It's about time we get to play as Raiden with clothes on.

I was hoping for a reverse blade sword.

Think I'm going to have to go with the kill everything until it's dead approach. That slicing mechanic is just going to be too fun lol.

I did the no kill playtrhough in MGS4, and plan on doing it with Rising, but I am dissapointed because it sounds like stealth is out. I don't consider running up and cleaving an enemy's sword in twain exactly 'pacifist'. Still, I am excited. I'm just sad about how it appears the stealth genre is... dissapearing.

The game looks cool, but I'm getting this strange Splinter Cell:Conviction-esque feel, and that's not really a good thing.

I doubt that will happen. They won't put in a 6 hour co-op side story that really should have been just a few missions to play with a friend.

W/ so many games coming out next year. This is in my top 3. I can't wait to play this game. Ever since it being announced and then the gameplay being shown last June, it's gonna be amazing. I hope there will be a cool LE to go w/ it.

So as long as I don't kill them, I'm good. I've heard around that a head can live even after being separated...

They need move support for this.

That's good to hear. One of my favorite things about the MGS games is that killing is optional, which really makes you feel like the game is giving you options and letting you play the way you want - not to mention it just feels really heroic to go through a level and knock out all the bad guys without killing.

To get the Stealth camo in MGS3 you not only needed no kills, but also no alerts.

It's called Metal Gear Solid, which was probably more fun when you got through each level without raising a single alert or having to even knock out a single bad guy. Having the enemies see Raiden running around waiving a sword just doesn't seem like Metal Gear to me.

You can play other games to get your kill-all-the-bad-guys fix, but I for one play Metal Gear to get my Tactical Espionage Action on.

I just don't like how this series is dragging on.

I think in MGS 2 the sword had two modes. A killing mode and a non-lethal stunning mode (electric stun).
