Two parts of GSC Game World's eerie FPS series -- set in an alternate-reality Chernobyl following a second nuclear meltdown -- can be yours on the super cheap. Both the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and follow-up S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat are bundled together for only $10 on Steam through Monday. (The S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky prequel game is not part of the bundle; but it's is available separately for $10 on Steam.)
The full-on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 sequel was recently announced and scheduled for release in 2012. While that gives you plenty of time to get to caught up, this weekend Steam sale might just be the excuse you were looking for to book your first trip to Chernobyl. That whole nuclear meltdown incident made it quite a lovely place for scavenging, trespassing, adventuring, loner-ing, killing, exploring and robbing. See what we did there?

How does this work if I already have one of the games? Can I pay 5$ for one of them?

Nope, it's a sale on the bundle, not the individual games.

It's so glitchy though, I'm a little upset that it freezes so much, as well. Like, when I start a new game on CoP, it freezes. On SoC, well it's just slow as hell, and my computer runs Crysis on max settings

Buy it! The first STALKER, Shadow of Chernobyl, is really good with the STALKER Complete mod and Call of Pripyat is great right out of the box (or right out of the hard drive...?).

The complete mod significantly improves the graphics and it fixes up the gameplay a bit, tweaking the AI and the interface.

Yes, the STALKER games work under Vista, but you should be on 7!

I'll have to give that mod a try. I was one of those people who didn't 'get' stalker for a while, but a friend and I had nothing to do for a couple of days so we played through it - I don't think I've ever played a better FPS. Challenging, incredibly immersive and so, so atmospheric. Although we were playing on one down from the highest difficulty and towards the end of the game, each time we got shot led to near fatal bleeding. But that just added to the charm :P

Has anyone else experienced the horrible lag issue??
And it's not from lack of hardware.
I'm running an intel xeon six core at 3.6ghz
6gb 1800mhz ddr3 ram
2x5870 crossifre 900/1250
It's kinda frustrating after paying a whole $10.00 for. :(

Micro-stuttering and lag are pretty common issues with dual GPU setups; in certain titles, the framerate fluctuates so wildly as to be nigh unplayable (even if the maximum number of frames per second is extremely high). In your case, it's a little strange. The Stalker games have an affinity for ATI hardware and are extremely Crossfire friendly; if you were to have an issue, it shouldn't be in either of these games. Which leaves two things: 1) they need to be patched or 2) there's a driver issue. I've heard the Catalyst 10.7 driver really screwed Crossfire performance, so it might be worthwhile rolling it back to 10.5.
