Torchlight 'hopefully' out on XBLA and PSN by holidays, has sold 750,000 units
77
Runic Games had dreams of putting Torchlight on Xbox Live Arcade, then it put "serious effort" into a console version, and now the studio is hoping to have the game out by this holiday for PSN and XBLA. Runic CEO Max Schaefer told Joystiq at Gamescom today, "We're trying, we're talking [to Sony and Microsoft] and we hope to get that done quickly." Although there's no release window, he told us it'll "hopefully" be available "by the holidays."
Schaefer also told us the game has now sold over 750,000 units and is en route to a million. The RPG reached the half-million milestone back in May after launching in October, following a tiny development time of 10 months. If the sales figure seems a bit low, the executive mentioned that piracy has been an issue, but they have no way of tracking how many illegal copies were made.
As for Torchlight 2 on consoles, Schaefer told us Runic will "try" to get the multiplayer sequel to consoles sometime after the PC and Mac release.

I'm definitely going to buy this. I played the hell out of the PC version and I really feel bad for paying $10 for this awesome title. I'm also going to laugh when people whine about it being $15 while the original (while more often then not it seems to be on sale) was $20.

So you're going to buy the game again even though you already have it just to support the developers?
And then people wonder why gamers are broke.

And how many copies of Mario have you owned? Tetris? Any other super popular game that has been remade or re-released?
Like Peggle, I'm buying this day one.

Only Mario I've bought was Mario Kart, and there was a difference between each release. Never bought Tetris. I don't buy remakes or rereleases unless I've never played the original.. The only exception is Perfect Dark XBLA, because I thought 4 player splitscreen action transitioned into 8 player online matches would be amazing. What a flop. There is no online activity whatsoever.

I own Castlevania SOTN on 3 consoles. I'll buy it again when (hopefully) it's released on iOS.

Why? so you could (probably) pay more for it on consoles? =/
or You just like the console experience more because you can just sit down, grab a controller, and play the awesomeness that is Torchlight? =)
Either way... I got it on Steam during one of the many times it was $5 bucks but I'll get it again on consoles when it's deal of the week.

This is a click-fest type game, though. It's just click-click-click throughout the entire game. You can play most of the game using only the mouse.

While I don't share the in the joy of the game. I do agree that it would be nice to have it on the PS3 (or 360) before the holiday. The game really wasn't that bad, I just had some problems in gameplay areas. I respectfully disagree that this is a good Diablo clone.

750,000?! Wow, that's pretty good. I still haven't gotten around to buying it since my backlog is a little too big right now. I am happy that Runic is doing well, though (along with ArenaNet). After all, most of these guys are ex-Blizzard guys. Poor Flagship.

at least, a developer that talks realistically about the piracy and says: we don´t know how many pirate copies were sold we can´t track them down. funny thing is, i always hear that "we could sell more but piracy" thing, but ps3 ( the "no piracy" console, uppsss sorry, now is possible to load games there too right? ) has many games that have sold exactly that, on wii on the 360 i ALWAYS hear numbers that goes from 1 million t0 1.5 sometimes more but it never goes higher than that, so why they always say we could but we didn´t for piracy?? how about we couldn´t because that the amount that everybody sells?? only starcraft and the sims have sold more than 1 million (and both of them in the "doomed for piracy" p.c.) but those numbers are pretty much the standard, anyway has anyone made some calculations of how much is 15 X 1,000.000??? ..... mmm and that´s a small amount of money??? right.......

I don't get it they already made something like 40 million on a game with 20 people working on it 1 year long it's already been good profit for them and they still feel the need to mention piracy. I mean yes piracy is a problem but if it isn't a problem for you why talk about it.
And IMO 750.000 is quite a bit for a game released digitally (at first) from a new dev a new ip and 0 marketing.

@context Based off of the "If the sales figure seems a bit low" that introduced the CEO's comment on piracy, my guess is that it was brought up by the interviewer, who apparently thought 750K "seems a bit low." Again, that's just a guess.
Regardless, although it's impossible to calculate how much they lost (or "didn't lose" as may be argued) from piracy, it's probably still a concern for them. Their studio might be new, but the devs themselves are industry vets, so I imagine they're generally aware of the problem and its size/depth. If he really did bring it up without any prompting from the interviewer, I imagine it was because they made it a point not to inconvenience players with ridiculous DRM, which left it fairly open to piracy and probably left them with lingering worries.

3) Will torchlight 2 come to the consoles?

It goes both ways. PCs have been getting a lot of games that used to be only on consoles. It's just business now--you want your game on PC, 360, and PS3 to sell the most copies.

I just picked this up new a few weeks ago, got it for my laptop while travelling...so doesn't see a lot of play. If I'd known it was coming out for a console I would have waited although it is tempting to get it for one. That way I'd get a chance to play it.
I also thought those sales numbers were pretty good.
