Guerilla Games Managing Director Hermen Hulst showed off the circa-1999 concept video in a keynote speech in Cologne earlier this week, calling it a "showcase of technical competence" prepared for their first meeting with Sony. Even though Hulst admits there's "nothing really 'Killzone' about it" at this early stage (for instance, the Helghast and their glowing eyes don't even make a cameo appearance) we thought it was an interesting look at the pre-history of one of Sony's biggest exclusive franchises. To see the video in full, follow us past the break.
What Killzone looked like before it was Killzone

The E3 2005 trailer for Killzone 2 quickly became well-known (infamous, even) for its supposedly unatainable levels of in-game graphical prowess. But the initial trailer for the game that would become the original Killzone has been much less well known ... until this past week at GDC Europe.

given the timeframe- I'd say more PSX looking.
And regarding the bit about Helghast not making an appearance- of course they didn't show Helghast if this was made in 1999. Jin Roh didn't come out in the US until late that year, they wouldn't have had time to completely rip off the character design yet.
But obviously, it would come later..

Its always fun seeing old tech demos, Games sure have come a long way. If that had come out in 99 it would have been amazing.

First of all, the graphics quality in this presentation has nothing to do with hardware limitations. It's a pitch video, which is made and shown before the project even enters pre-production. Therefore, naturally, no assets exist yet, and a demo like this is likely put together in a few days.
Second, yes their concept was absolute trash, and it woefully showed in the final product as well. I respect Guerilla's visual sensibilities, but their overall concept is unimaginative and frankly, boring. I'm amazed that this idea was ever allowed to continue past this stage.

Infamous, even though a super hero game, appeals that demographic. Even though a critical flop, Haze which was a Sony exclusive at the time was also an attempt to gain the shooter demographic even further. The Uncharted series, which is an amazing series of games and demographic bending, has the same combat mechanics of your typical western shooter.

I think the PS3 has a pretty good mix of genres, especially among the exclusives. Heavy Rain, LittleBigPlanet, Demon's Souls, MotorStorm, God of War, Flower, inFamous, WipEout, WKC, and those are just ones from Sony themselves. The only shooter properties from Sony that are new for the PS3 are Resistance and MAG (does Uncharted count as a shooter?). At this stage, I think all the consoles have a lot of variety. I mean, it's been 4 years since the newest one debuted.
Why do fans of Sony have to be Japanophiles? Considering that most of Sony's development studios are not Japanese. . . . Or did you simply mean "fans of Sony and the PS3 who also happen to be Japanophiles"? Those people would probably just be more upset that their favorite Japanese developers were not making PS3 games rather than be concerned about shooters also being on the machine. Fortunately for them, Japanese support for the PS3 seems to be on the rise of late.

The original post is so strange that I sense that ,as a whole, this reply section is just baffled as to why it was asked. The PS2 wasn't a Japanophile system and neither was the PS. Both were wildly popular with a varied and extensive library of games. This is no different now.
As for Japanese developed games for Japanophiles, I'm at a loss for words. Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have Japanese developed games, and not all of those fit into the FFXIII JRPG mold. Some of those are shooters or action games. So, actually, I'm confused too.
Note: The Xbox 360 actually has a great library of JRPGs, and the DS may or may not have the greatest library of JRPGs, so this "I naturally buy from Sony" stuff doesn't make a whole lot of sense

Its supposed to look sloppy, its not really a tech demo but a concept. They spend what they have making the concept and barely start the game, then present the concept to publishers. Once they get a deal then they go ahead with development.
Go dig up the old halo concept vid, from when it was an rts.

I was so hyped after the 2005 trailer, this one created this weird yet unpleasant feeling of nostalgia and happiness that we are out of that graphical age.

I helped up vote, even though there was one more step and no stealing, I thought it was a nice little South Park reference.

The same year Dreamcast launched...
It is "that bad," even for the time. As others have already said, though, that totally isn't the point. This video isn't supposed to be about visuals.
Its a proof of concept, not a target video.

Always love seeing videos like this.
And, still love that E3 2005 video. It got so many talking and shut so many people up all at the same time. Good stuff.
