Halo: Reach marketing campaign flexes giant robo-arm
41
What's gonna give Halo: Reach the best shot at topping Modern Warfare 2's $310 million in day-one sales? Marketing. Much to no one's surprise, Microsoft is splurging on its biggest game campaign to date, according to Advertising Age. While Reach's marketing budget has not been disclosed, it's expected to easily top Halo 3's reported $6.5 million bill.
The ad campaign, which began in earnest with a big-budget plug ... for the multiplayer beta (way back in April), will continue to use live-action segments to attempt to forge an emotional connection with a broad audience across TV and the web. "We're trying to get people to connect back to their lives, not computer graphics or something overly sci-fi," Taylor Smith, director of global marketing communications for Xbox, told Ad Age. "Live action is a way to capture that." In particular, director Noam Murro (Smart People) has created three live-action short films that depict life on planet Reach before the Covenant invasion.
Meanwhile, potential buyers will be urged to "remember Reach" as they consume Pepsi products. A renewed partnership between Microsoft and the snack-time mogul will put Halo branding on some 300 million Mountain Dew bottles and 30 million Doritos bags beginning next month. Of course, to top past efforts, Microsoft will expand the Reach campaign beyond these somewhat pedestrian reminders: Cue massive KUKA KR 140 robotic arm!
The viral site RememberReach.com, which becomes fully operational at 3AM ET tomorrow, features a user-generated light sculpture of Reach's Noble Team, created by the robo-arm and some fancy camera equipment. Typically used to assemble cars, this KUKA bot has been outfitted with an LED and stationed in an undisclosed San Francisco warehouse. As detailed by GameLife, visitors will direct the machine to plot the 54,000 points of light that will form this Noble Team "monument." Bizarre.
Halo: Reach launches on September 14.

The grenades were like mininukes, but they got nerfed :(. Spartans ran a little slow and the Banshee and tank were made of paper mache.

I REALLY wish Reach hadn't leaked this early. It sucks that all the people will modded consoles have already played it. If it was a week or so, it wouldn't be so bad. This is ridiculous.

If their Xbox's are Jtagged, they can just unban themselves. MS needs to have a strike team to find out where they live and kick them in the nuts.

@Walkdiesel Yeah, many people who have the simple mod that allows you to play burned games will get banned. Those who have that JTAG nonsense can just unban themselves. We have to wait 3 more weeks while the pirates have already finished the game. For almost any other game I wouldn't care, but for something like this, it's frustrating.

AS of right now only jtagged xbox's can play. Xbox's with flashed firmware are left in the dark as of now.

Is it really fair to compare MW2's one day sales to Reach? MW2 was released on PC as well as PS3. If Xbox sales are compared then that's fair.

@daytripper Well it`s Halo, so there`s a VERY good chance it has the ability to top the $310M made by MW2 and I hope it does, someone needs to show Activi$ion that people know what they are buying
On another note: Why can`t Sept. 14th come faster?!?!?

@daytripper Probably not, but if it even holds a candle to MW2's day one sales it isn't much to bitch about. Halo 3 raked in $170 million in first day sales, more than half that of MW2s, despite the fact that Halo 3's 360 exclusivity limits it to a market roughly 1/3rd the size of multi-plat games like COD.

@daytripper Nobody actually bought MW2 on PC silly :P, jk, I think this would be a great acheivement for Bungie if it gets a little close to MW2's sales with a console exclusive title

This is why I respect MS because of their marketing. I mean MS had commercials airing about the Reach beta. To me, MS are marketing geniuses.
Sony should do the same w/ GT5. I mean where are the KB commercials?

ahhh Halo advertising season... here we go again.... Why not partner up with Trojan condoms to make a Spartan variety.
Mind you the demographic that plays Halo and those who use condoms are completely opposite. But at least Bungie can cover every market segment that way. ;)
*waits for comment about how Halo players don't use condoms because they are way too cool*
Btw - For those who are Halo fans, enjoy the game.

I am just curious if Bungie/Microsoft will have another kick-ass pre-launch party at the EMP in downtown Seattle again, like they did for ODST. It was a lot of fun, they didn't give out any copies of the game or sell them early, but it was a fun atmosphere.

Ain't no advertising like Halo advertising. The other companies could learn something from this. I'm looking at you Call of Duty with your Eminem mashup trailers. Lame.

What's the point of bringing up obvious marketing tactics when you claim they are unrelated to the subject at hand?
It's an article about a huge marketing push for a big budget game, notorious for the feelings of love or hate it evokes in people. You came in saying how often times the worst of the worst is given a huge marketing push so that idiots will like it. How are we not supposed to make that connection? Maybe if it was an article on marketing in general I'd believe you, but it's an article about a specific game.

What exactly do you expect with your comment on a Halo article? Calling me a troll for no reason doesn't make you immune to the title, troll.
BTW - I have no idea why you would assume I'm a nerd other than I'm on this site. You do realize you're here too right?

Indeed. I drank the Halo 3 game fuel like a pro when it came out back in 07'. And of course I saved an especially good specimen in my secret underground command bunker.

Heh, the son of my Mum's work colleague (who is part of the LightsCameraGuns team from YouTube) was actually filming the advert for Reach. He showed me photos - it's set on an RAF base in the UK, and will feature those Warthogs from Halo: Landfall. This may turn out to be wrong, but I'm not lying here.

There's no chance in hell of it beating Modern Warfare 2's numbers.
MW2 came out on 360, PS3 and PC.
Reach only comes out on 360. As an owner of a PS3 & PC gaming rig, but no 360, I won't be seeing Reach unless it (at a much later date) hits PC.
You can't compete with those numbers when you are only hitting one of the three markets that MW2 had covered. I'm sure it's a good game, I'm just pointing out the fact of the matter.

Yeah I agree. Its a pipe dream to believe that Reach will even approach MW2 numbers. But I bet Reach will blow away the record for launch sales of an exclusive title on any platform.
