I agree. But if I'm in a rush to work, 15-20 minutes in a car is better than 40-50 on a bus or train.

Every review I've read makes it a point to highlight that the game is strictly linear mission-based when they were expecting open-world.

It's like nobody played the first one.

But they built a full city, it's like teh Grand Theft Autos!

Seriously though, I agree. Though, the first game had some pretty epic missions, which I haven't read much about in reviews so far.

MAFIA was more of a story told in a gangster simulation, rather than designed around arcade fun. The fun of simulations ARE the fact that the cars handle realistically and you have to driver the whole way there. When you wreck your car and the engine dies and the police gun you down...I actually like that kind of realism.

Simulation isn't very popular these days, so I can see why reviewers aren't really getting into it.

I think the point in mentioning the linearity, at least in this review, is only seen in the context of today's "open world" gaming climate. The first Mafia came out 8 years ago. GTA3 and Vice City were literally its only competitors and, even then, offered more variety in their stories.

They should've learned to implement some useful options.

This kind of bums me out. I was a big fan of the first game, but I only had to play the demo of Mafia 2 to lose most of my hope for it.

The driving is just ass. The limitations aren't the problem, either. Knowing when to speed and when to chill out, which cars were fast, which cars handled well... It all made Mafia more flavorful, especially considering how few missions forced you in to a specific car.

The cars in Mafia 2 feel like boats. They literally feel like driving a boat in GTA4. That exact sensation. Its the worst.

@Fullmetal Salchemist I guess they figured that with Take Two's pedigree (Red Dead, GTA), the original was an aberration.

3.5/5 seems like an awfully high score for a review that's consistently negative from beginning to end

No, it's exactly right. The rating system here isn't the same as it is other places. It's not judge by percentages, but rather by worth to the intended gamer. Justin states that if you're into the type of game, and environment, then it's right up your alley. That's what 3 and 1/2 is for.

Mafia comes across to me like STALKER. A very flawed game but with majorly redeeming points. It has a lot of things wrong with it because it doesnt have the budget to be polished, but its originality and atmosphere is its saving grace.

I liked the demo and the fact that it's a different setting than other games I've played, but judging by the reviews so far I get a feeling it all might get a bit repetitive fast.

And previews of Fallout New Vegas have been very positive so far.

Im sorry but do you always have to be so damn negative Justin? Every damn game, unless is loved by everyone, is utter crap to you. Its getting annoying

Mafia II is a very good game, sure its not perfect but its a downright crime games like GTA 4 get 10/10 and games like this get scathing reviews! You never mention any of the good points and only focus on the bad.

Its like saying "MGS4 sucked, one cutscene was over 30 mins! 0/10 hurp durp!"

Oh, I didn't realize you already played it and were therefore qualified to evaluate it as "great" – nothing like coming in with your mind made up, eh?

And there are several sections where he addresses what he liked about the game, most notably the city. Did you even read the review or just skip to the rating, decide it didn't conform with your pre-determined evaluation, and begin complaining on a video game site.

@Billlop You have a point, I often love games that everyone else loves. I've tried to penalize games for being universally well-regarded, but I haven't found a really effective way of doing so yet.

Also, we didn't give a rating to GTA IV, so WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Money.

For the record, I really appreciate your candor and criticism Justin. I think you put good perspective into "where we are at in the video game timeline"- meaning incorporating previous releases of similar genre games when coming up with a review of a game that may or may not be worth my dollar.

He never said you reviewed GTA IV, he just said "sure its not perfect but its a downright crime games like GTA 4 get 10/10 and games like this get scathing reviews!"

He just said that MOST reviewers rate games highly when they're either going to be popular or sell big (or presumably, both). But, if anyone bases buying a game by reviews then they have serious problems. Either A) Rent the game or B) Download the demo. OnLive is great for this, considering you can play the game for free for 30 minutes.

@SnorlaxTheSerialKiller You realize how viciously stupid complaining about popular games getting high scores is, right? Like you understand the inherent stupidity?

Not only is it already pretty dumb, it's also patently untrue. Just last week I gave a 2.5 out of 5 to Kane and Lynch and it's the number one selling game in the UK this week.

If you guys have a problem with a review, I'm happy to address them. But when you're trying to justify or negate my scores based on whatever societal influences you imagine I was under, you're going to make zero headway.

That's not what I meant. What I meant was that it's stupid to complain about a review in general (In my opinion, it's even stupider to write a review). And I myself wasn't complaining (to be brutally honest I don't give a shit about what some guy on the internet thinks about a video game), I was just clarifying what Billlop said into a format which you might consider a little bit more understandable.
