Surprised on how powerfully defended this game is. It looks so incredibly generic. Even the title lulls me to sleep. It seems the only thing that makes this game stand out is the awkwardly hilarious presence of Playboy mags.

And it got nearly 4 stars! That's a kind score!

Good review Justin, disappointed by this one and will probably pass on it.

Most of the comments on here are pretty lame. Generally speaking you're not going to enjoy reading them, though from time to time you'll stumble across a few that stand out and show how good the comments could have been. It's a shame, a real missed opportunity.

Overall, I give the comments a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

@Chaz Winterbottom

The negative tone that's present throughout your comment made me expect you to give the comments a much lower score.

Just get the PC version. With all the progress being made on modding the demo, it won't be long till we see custom stuff on the final version. Who knows, maybe there will be a "things to do" script that adds side stuff to the world.

The review sounds consistent with what other places has said...rigidly linear...with tedious driving sequences.

You'd think that devs would've fixed the tedious-driving need for frequent checkpoints thing by now, since it's existed since GTA3 and even the portable PSP version of GTA.

I'll wait on this one and spend the money perhaps on Metroid other M, which looks...great.

Pre-order regret'ed... can you get a refund on Steam? Driving is the single-most tedious part of open world games. I thought we were done with it.

@Dale P

Steam allows refunds for pre-orders as long as it's done before the release date.

People like you make me sad.

Driving is easily my favorite part of any GTA game (except San Andreas). If the Driver series hadn't gone completely off the rails after the first game, I'd still be playing them.

The joylessness of horse riding is actually my least favorite thing about Red Dead Redemption.

The problem with Mafia 2 is... the driving is awful. The cars feel like boats. They should feel like cars.

If you're going to force me to drive a street boat, at least include some Street Sharks.

@Dale P

Maybe you should play the demo and see if you think it's fun? That IS what a demo is for!

And I personally enjoyed the driving, it's much different from your regular Split/Second or GT5...

@Chareth Cutestory I thought I was the only person who LOVED the first driver. I mean that game was awesome. And honestly they took what was great about the game and threw it away trying to chase GTA. The Stuntman game was a great return to what made Driver great. Pure action movie style driving.

So basically, it sounds like a somewhat more polished version of the original.

I wish there had been some comparison on that point - reviews of sequels usually reference their predecessors. The original was full of clunky driving, linearity, mediocre gunplay, absurd difficulty spikes, and a solid-if-generic storyline...and it got rave reviews. Have people just been spoiled by the sandbox boom and that's responsible for the significant drop in score? Or is it actually *worse* than the original?

@Aerothorn

You have to take in to account the 8 year gap. The "open world" elements of the first game already felt behind the times in 2003.

And, though I'm beating the hell out of this dead horse, the driving is awful. I loved the driving in the first game, even the shitty little faux-Model T's and Schubert 6's. They felt like actual cars.

The "cars" in Mafia 2 do not. In both Arcade and Simulation driving modes, they feel like boats.

so like this is an open world with very little to do in it?

I admit i have mixed feelings. on one hand, i wanted it to be cool. on the other hand i am a little strapped for cash, so wasn't sure i actually wanted to want it, you know?

@Billy Taebo Blanks

People were also people in the 1940s. Just because "people were racist" doesn't mean the people they were racist toward don't deserve to be... people.

They need to be more than stereotypes or sponges for epithets.

I would've loved to know some technical details. The demo's framerate for instance, killed the experience for me.

Every time Justin doesn't like a game I'm interested in, it ends up being a classic that I'm glad I didn't pass up. Metro 2033, Just Cause 2, and now, probably, this.

i'm incredibly bummed about the reviews this game's been getting, i was truly looking forward to it. i don't understand the complaints being made about the driving. cars back then didn't handle nearly as well as they do today, don't expect a realistic game to drive like GTA. Plus, once i fully upgraded the vette in the demo, it drove like a champ. the on foot action was fine, the only gripe i had was the fact that vito lacked the ability to blindfire and didnt know how to melee with his guns. other than that it felt like a terrific game.

however i feel that these above average scores were probably deserved. i understand the game is supposed to have a movie-like feel with a linear storyline, but the fact that there's no side missions, no multiplayer, hell not even mulitple difficulty levels, makes it hard to justify the purchase since it's only a 10-12 hour game. it's truly a shame too because the development team did an incredible job of capturing the feel of the 1950's and, from the videos and what i saw in the demo, really did a great job with the storyline, voice acting, and overall directing of the cutscenes.

looks like i'll be cancelling my pre-order of the collector's edition and give it a rent.
