I really don't like the way the game industry is heading...

Look, I understand that the publishers have to try something to protect their games and whatnot... but it always seems to come at the expense of the legitimate customer.

And it always seems like the most aggressive companies in pushing forwarding DRM (Ubisoft, EA, etc.) are also the most profitable... so I wonder why they act so scared.

Except this really isn't aggressive.

I prefer a system like this than something like Always On drm.

I don't believe punishing those that buy a game second hand is the answer but instead we should reward those who buy new. I believe developers are entitled to the profit from their games not the distributor who sells them. As is publishers, wholesalers and retailers already take a huge chunk of the profit before the developer sees a single penny let alone the fact they get zero profit from the second hand market. Just reward those who decide to put down the full £40 with lots of free DLC and unlockables such as themes and avatar items. It's been enough to keep me buying games new when EA bundle Cerberus and VIP codes with Mass Effect 2 and Bad Company 2 bought new.

An "always on" system works fine for a game that ONLY has an online component. But to always have to be connected online for single-player or "practice" modes? That's ridiculous.

A system like Steam works. It lets you legitimately buy PC games, it's locked to your account, and it doesn't force you to be online to play games offline. Oh, and no nasty rootkits, either. I can't say Steam is ideal (I'm sure others see fault in its system), but so far, it's been the best form of DRM yet.

I suppose these activation codes work in a similar manner to Steam (locking the game to your account), but it just blurs the lines between PC gaming and console gaming. Console gaming was supposed to be an easy, thought-free version to play games. No activation codes, no HDD installs, etc...

Bonuses for new purchases is definitely a better model than subtraction of features for used purchases.

Except if you buy it new, you don't need to pay anything extra.

Just like i said with VIP codes for bad company 2 (which pretty much was a disappointment, either way i still got over 300 hours of game from that 50 dollar purchase), if you buy it new you wont pay any extra.

@McDuckScrooged: If that's the case, Sony lost their collective, first-party whoring minds. It would explain why MS continues to charge arms, legs and firstborns for their peripherals: they eat any losses with the XBL revenue. Sony wants a piece of that rapidly growing pie.

This will just make people more aware of buying preowned games.
They will eventually make more money or they will loose a ton.

One day they will eventually learn the lesson. but by that time it may be to late.

Nope. It will make people aware of buying new games at CHEAPER price. If you buy pre-owned/used, you won't get that online pass for free. But if you buy NEW you'd get that online pass.

Gamers will have to actually look for the best bargain or just wait a tid bit for retailers to discount the games.

I don't mind the whole Project Ten-Dollar idea, but I think it's a terrible idea to charge twenty dollars for the online portion of Fireteam Bravo 3. I think they need to find somewhere in the middle of useless content and necessary content.

oh I remember how EVERYONE was raving about EA's "project ten dollar" for Mass Effect 2 and BFBC2 only to realize the content we were getting wasn't even substantial or worth paying for to begin with.

Now THQ has adopted this idea, and soon everyone will. If Sony does this I will sell my PS3 and go on my way mark my words.

How many who buy used games keep them afterward? If you think, most people who buy new games are either impulsive or really intend to keep it. Those who buy used are not really interested in *that* game and would rather pay cheap to play a bit and then resell it right after to buy another used game.

Used game prices for those titles will just have to get lowered the price of the online access and then people will be happier, unless you give it to your friend

People could just buy used because money is an issue(i.e. me) it doesn't necessarily mean they aren't *interested* in the game.

As sad as I am to see the gaming industry going this way, I really can't argue with their reasoning behind this. When you buy used you're not supporting the developers so I don't understand why people complain so much about it. I buy new half the time, but the other half I buy used. I really can't afford to buy every game new. ( Thank you Buy 2 get 1 free at Gamestop!) Right now it doesn't affect me that much since the only games I play online are SFIV and Demon's Souls, but it just sucks that if this keeps heading this way every publisher will adopt this and even the non-sport/FPS games will have these restrictions. In the end I really can't complain though, but it does me make me a sad panda. :(

This is really anti-family gaming and anti-multiple system households. They either tie the code to the system or to a profile and either way; they screw over their most devote customers and future customers (children).

I only want to spend one price on a game and be able to play it to its fullest with my children on any of the systems I have setup in my house. This code to play online, code to get DLC inside of new boxes really infuriates me. I purposefully buy new games to support the developers and rarely trade in any game unless I feel like I was ripped off.

This sort of tactic will make me feel more and more ripped off; and eventually my family entertainment money may end up going somewhere else.

I personally approve of such measures on the sole condition that online/multiplayer trophies be removed in order to earn platinum trophies. Just make those supplemental for people that would enjoy achieving them.

I don't really care if everyone does this as long as this is as far as this goes. I always buy my games new and I haven't bought a used game since last gen. This might be a good thing for some people, mainly the single player people. Gamestop and similar stores are likely to sell used games even cheaper to give some people the incentive t continue to buy used, but what about people who don't care about DLC or online; they just got a game that would be $15 more if this wasn't put into place. I think the people who mostly buy used are the people who are more casual and care less about DLC and online.

Also people who buy new also won't be penalized since they get the pass for free. Maybe, just maybe, new DLC and games could become cheaper than now.

Oh well, back to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I doubt that they will go that far. Since it would just be cheaper to buy used again. As of right now there isn't much incentive to buy new over used, but once pass is incorporated into most publishers they wouldn't want to eliminate that incentive.

I think they should just do something to your online persona. Like if you buy a lot of used games, everything on your dashboard looks old and faded and your icon looks like its been through the washing machine a couple of times. Your home avatar has stains on his shirt and carries around a rusted coffee can asking for spare change. Hilarious.
