@kingkobra

You know, there's this neat little workaround to this whole evil scheme, a rather simple one too, you just buy the games "new".

But keep this on the down-low, don't want Sony to catch on now do we?

The bottom line that people don't realize, is that game copies would PREFER no sale than a used sale. Why would a game copy want to carry support, server, and associated costs for someone who has given them zero dollars?

All of you people threatening not to buy used games you're just completely missing the point.

@TheLastOne

Used games get people into the franchise. Billy isn't going to go buy a brand new game from an IP he knows nothing about. If he buys it used he can get it cheaper and use the 7 day return policy Gamestop has so he doesn't have a huge fear of dropping that dime. and even from a non-retail point, what if Billy likes the look of a game and wants to borrow it from a friend or buy it off him? No online for you Billy, sharing is bad! Games are already overpriced as it is, and you're defending these people?

This will indirectly help kill new online-based IPs as well. There is nothing good to come of this. Devs aren't going to get a fat bonus because of this it's going to Kotick, Ricictello, etc checkbook

@Cleric But, poor Billy has been buying and trading franchise game 1 through 7 used. It's time for Billy to support the guys that makes the games he loves so much.

There are millions of hypothetical stories we can come up with.

This will penalize used-game buyers, but if they notice alot of people willing to pay the 10 bucks to go online you can be sure they will start offering games in offline or online versions. They must think they are the government the way they're trying to reach deeper into our pockets...

You all suck for hating on Sony and other publishers for doing this.

Instead GamesStop, EB, and Walmart rake in the profits that should go to the devs. Meanwhile the publishers can't re-allocate their servers to other games, administration costs remain high, and budgets are cut across the board.

Also, this has NOTHING to do with the PSN. This is for Sony-published games. Microsoft will follow suit with 1st party online-enabled games on the 360.

You fail to realize that the publisher sets the price of these games, and they put them so high people can't justify buying them.

@ The project $10 online pass crap
Can I get $10 off of a new game if I don't want whatever it is?
No, then sod off, I'll buy it second hand then.

Where is it benficial to buy a game used (seriously asking)? I buy used games on the internet but those are games of past generations. Of this generation, I have only purchased used games from Gamestop. The new games are usually $5 more so why not buy it new to begin with and not have to worry about this? I know I just said that I've purchased used from Gamestop but that's for B2G1 and even then, if this all mattered to me, I could just be more selective on the titles I choose to buy used. Not every game has online (thank goodness). Doesn't the price of a used game drop when the new copy price drops? So back to my main question, when/where/ why is buying used worth it to get upset by this (again, seriously asking, not arguing, I may be missing the point)?

@Voshempa I'm not upset by the change, but I have traded games on sites like Goozex for games I've already completed and no longer play. It's been beneficial to me because instead of letting a game I've finished just sit in storage forever, I could just trade it in for a game I haven't played yet.

Besides that, I'm fine with this Online Pass. I don't mind supporting the devs by buying new.

@incendious I see. I haven't seen that site so I'll have to check it out. If used games are at least $10 cheaper (than the new copy) then I guess it evens out, right? And, yeah, I agree on supporting game devs, for sure.

Resistance? No but maybe I would buy the game

Uncharted? No but I would play the single player

Gran Turismo? No I would just play single player

@ Yavar Bombos

Would developers even bother making games if they weren't making good money from Gamestop, EB, Walmart?

If not, then they should be re-evaluating how to bring games to market to increase profits to support costs

I would love to see more money in developers pocket, I just wish it wouldn't be at the expense of the people who buy used games...

agreed on the used games...EB buys used games low and sells high...they probably have better margins on their used games. I found good deals in used games from FutureShop and Jumbo Video (Canada). For example: Heavenly Sword (I know, really old title) EB= 39.99, FutureShop 14,99

@derbs Right. I understand they need to make a profit but the used games "should" be a lot cheaper than the new copies but sometimes that's not the case. Also, nice find with HS. I want that but it's still quite a bit around my parts. I'll keep waiting.

I have about 60 games for PS3 now, only possible because i buy a lot used to save money.

If the game looks impressive I'll pre-order & pay full price brand new! I got all these brand new: Uncharted 1 & 2, Little Big Planet -soon 2, Motor Storm 1 & 2, & soon 3, Resistance, Killzone 2, GTA 4, etc....

Here's my question...right now new games are $59.99, unless AWESOME I wait until used $39.99 or less. What if Game makers sold new games for $39.99??? They might make more money? Because they'd sell more new, & less people would buy used.

...oh wait my bad, who am I kidding I'd just wait until $19.99 then used!

LESSON LEARN - WORK HARD & MAKE AN AWESOME GAME = no worries :P Stop trying to think of tricks & ways to milk customers - make GREAT games & they will SELL!!!!!

Maybe I'm a little biased being a PC gamer, but this is nothing new to me. PC games, most PC games, have always needed a CD key in order to play online.

On the flip side of that coin, if the games were better and there were more in the vein of DLC to keep people playing the game, there would be no need for this.

What I hate is that the publisher wants to get paid twice. In order for me to purchase a game used, it had to be sold new 1st. The 1st sale doctrine protects the used media market. Be it games, books, cd's, or anything else. These corporations are getting greedier and greedier by the day, and it is really sickening.

Goddamn. I can't believe how brainwashed some of y'all are.

"The DRM/DLC ripoff/foreign object shoved in my rear could have been worse."

Or, you know, there could have been no DRM/etc/etc at all. When I lay down money for a game, I just want the game. I don't want to be nickel and dimed by extra missions or items or characters that should have been in the game (AKA "hey so we haven't even released this game yet, but we already have DLC for it"), and I don't want something in the game that makes it harder for me, a legitimate owner, to play the game.

And no, publishers aren't "forced" to do this by piracy or anything else. It's a choice. Their choice. They choose to screw you, and you forgive them. EVERY TIME.

"Yeah, but no, they have to pay for the servers!"

Not my problem. If you put online play in your game so that I'll want it more, I expect online play to be in the game. I don't really care what your server bill is or how you're going to pay it; presumably you thought about that before you sold me an online game. That's your business and your problem.

"But when you buy a used game, it doesn't benefit the developer!"

Yeah. So?

If I have a used car, let's say it's an old Civic, and I sell it to you, who should get the money - me, who actually owned the car, or Honda?

Games are no different. You pay money, you get something for it, that thing is yours. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

"But they have a right to make money!"

No they don't. They have an opportunity to make money. Not the same thing at all. To make that money, they have to sell me something I want. If the best they can do is sell me something I kind of want, only crippled and incomplete and with funny strings attached and rules about how I can use it, I don't want that.

"All you have to do is buy the game new and you don't have this problem."

Well, yes I do. First off because this is a dick move and I don't want to support it. Second, because when I decide whether a game is a good value, I have to think about things like "could I ever sell this game and get some of my money back?" and "could I let my buddy borrow this game?" If the answer is no, then the game's not as good a value. So basically what I'm saying is they're destroying the value of their product.

"So what are you going to do, just not buy games?"

Yeah. I'm going to just not buy games.

About 30 years ago, gaming was a major growth industry. And then something happened: game publishers, eager to cash in on the latest craze, started publishing shovelware. You couldn't buy a game anymore without worrying that it might suck. And the industry nearly died, until it was rescued by the NES.

Today, gaming is a major growth industry. But something is happening: publishers are looking for new and innovative ways to screw and cheat their customers. People are starting to get pissed off. Some people, I mean. People like me. Smart people.

Thanks to Sony's dickery with Other OS (which, lest ye forget, was also their choice) and now things like Playstation Plus, and also the fact that you can't back up your games or resell them, and some of them have always-online DRM - I've decided to stop supporting PSN. I don't buy any more downloadable games, period. It sucks, too, because there are a lot of games out or coming out that I'm interested in - Scott Pilgrim, Deathspank, From Dust, Castle Crashers, whatever that desert game is that That Game Company is working on, to name a few - but I'm not giving them any more money until they start giving me what I want.

I still buy games on disk, but I wait for them to drop to $20-30 first.

After this console generation, I don't think I'll buy another console. Sure as hell not from Sony. And maybe someday, if someone remembers how to not cheat and screw their customers and focuses on offering fair deals and good value, I'll get back into gaming again. If not? I have other hobbies.

And all because you guys let them get away with it. You let them ruin gaming. Thanks a lot, assholes.

Sony exploring the idea of being STUPID... Just like EA.

Me considering the idea of pirating!

If $60 is not enough, then stop making games and consoles.
If this is the way we are going then i'm gonna support modders and hackers. Period.

@ Xplo

Totally agree. This will probably be my last console unless things change.

And lets not forget them scrapping backwards compatability in order to resell you games ( I started with a PSone and then went to a PS2). I like that I can find games I didn't own before, but I can't play games I owned before.

On top of that, paying money for DLC's for what should have been in the original game. Soon, they'll just start charging you money for each piece of a game " Sorry Mario, The princess is in the other castle, please pay x dollars to purchase the next level".

The video game industry is HUGE now, so when things are good, people tend to suck all the money they can out of them...

Remember, we are the consumers, and if we choose not to consume, they MUST change...people are too complacent, or they just spend their money without caring...
