Portal 2 video: Stephen Merchant debuts as Wheatley
57
Valve has sent over a new trailer for Portal 2 (you know how much we love those), this time highlighting the vocal talents of The Office scribe Stephen Merchant in the role of Wheatley. Merchant's a wonderful match for the spherical sidekick, who's sure to win you over with his unpoised, upbeat blathering.
Just think of how sad you'll be when you inevitably drop him into a pit of fire.

Kinda insulting for people who've dealt with comatose patients/family members/friends.

If South Park has taught us anything it's that you can freeze yourself until it comes out. Just make sure your friends can find you to unfreeze you again. You'd miss the game all together AND get caught up in a massive Atheist war. Bad times.

I think Rich Lord's voice was better, but he had crap diction and sounded really odd while talking, personally I think they should have re-recorded his voice and spent the money used on merchant for some sort of speech coach.
However Merchant seems to do a good enough job of it.

All he really needed to do was enunciate. You don't even need a vocal coach to learn how to do that, you just need practice.

Love it, love Merchant. This trailer is waaaaaay too long though, I mean do we really need to see all this footage? It looks rad, don't get me wrong, but the best part of the last hour or so of Portal was discovery! What if they had showed the escape in the trailer?

Or you know, Joystiq could spell his name correctly: Stephen Merchant
You guys are really forgoing even a shred of semi-journalistic credibility today aren't you?

Honest mistake that didn't get corrected before the post went live. I'm sorry you had to see it and I appreciate you bringing attention to it.
I will, however, point out that your hostility should be aimed at an admitted lapse of copy editing -- this has nothing to do with journalistic credibility. Flawed logic, yes?

Then maybe you should go find a different website you deem as more credible and act like a complete jerk-off on that instead.

I'm still a large supporter of the old Wheatly's voice. I know it was only a temp. voice done by an animator, but the old Wheatly gave off the feeling of a native and child-like personality that I found absolutely charming. The old Wheatly seemed so blissfully unaware of the absolute dangers that were facing Chell, and just took it in stride. The old voice just fit the personality I felt Valve was going for better. I really just can't see this new Wheatly hacking by guessing every single combination there is one at a time, as his tone implies he's smarter than that.
I've also got a problem with using celebrities as voice actors instead of professional voice actors, but that's a tale for another day.

You realise this guy is famous for being a radio presenter as well as a comedian? He's not just any random celebrity.
While I like both voices, I find their choice of voice actors to be pretty good, actually.

I genuinely liked this voice better.
Oh well, the writing is amazing, so it doesn't really detract too much.

Old voice is much better. I thought of Wheatley with a joking tone and with not so much of a serious tone to his voice. At the end he seriously is like DONT WORRY! And he yells it when the other voice was much better. I hope they change the voice back.... Ugh.
Besides my bickering I love the lighting and textures. It looks soooooo great. I need a new PC to play this though. My PC will explode if it sees these graphics.

I really don't like the voice, I liked Glados's synthesized robotic voice, Wheatley seems like some comical companion from a Pixar movie. It just doesn't jive with me. Downvote away.
