DoubleBear Productions, an indie developer composed of Bethesda and Troika vets, has finally revealed what was only known as "ZRPG" up until now: Dead State. It's an RPG set in the fictional town of Splendid, TX, which is in the grips of a full-on zombie apocalypse. As one might expect, the object is to keep one's self off the breakfast, brunch, lunch, lupper, supper and evening snack menus.
Players operate out of a local school, which serves as a hub and sanctuary from the horrors that have befallen the rural community. From here, you strike out into the wilds, hunting down supplies and (hopefully) other survivors, but can also use resources to beef up your pad. But, as you've seen in countless zombie films and other works of fiction, not every survivor is a friend -- or sane, for that matter.
Combat will be turn-based and the player will be able to issue commands to the whole group or individuals. For more on the design of the game, check out DoubleBear's FAQ page. The game is fueled by the Age of Decadence engine and will be available for the PC, initially only through digital distribution services.

Too much of the same premise? What would you expect someone to do in a zombie apocalypse? There isn't much to do other then maybe find a cure for said zombie apocalypse or survive.
What do you want the premise to be like? Give the zombies some salsa lessons?

I'd highly recommend following that Rock Paper Shotgun link at the bottom of the article. This game looks very interesting, and is probably the closest to a George A. Romero simulator yet.

Wow. Sounds fun. Digital Distribution Services, so... Steam and/or Impulse?
If its cheap, which usually indie is, then this sound rather fun

As soon as I saw that screenshot I got Fallout 1-2 vibes (sans apocolyptic wasteland). And as soon as I read "turn-based" I had to change my pants due to the potential pants soiling (too late) awesomeness this could be.

Troika was made up of a lot of people who worked on making F1 and F2, who then went on to make Arcanum, which while it had some flaws, was still one of the best PC RPGs of the very early 2000s. Troika games tended to be brilliant on content, but with serious bug issues.

My dream game is a game like L4D but open-world and you can claim and reinforce your own improvised stronghold. And you have RPG-esque stats.
I will continue dreaming

Really I meant to put in "This is as close as a game will get to that dream" but hit submit on accident

I'd be a little worried if anyone from obsidian was really involved with this. After their last game!

Another zombie game really?
Dont get me wrong I love zombies but man they're starting to become as annoying as when we had nothing but WW2 shooters.
Why hasn't anyone done anything with dinosaurs this gen?
We've had what Jurassic the hunted and Turok?
Im sure someone could make a badass dinosaur game if they tryed

@Jawmuncher This isn't a shooter though. The idea is that this will focus more on survival rather than the killing of zombies. Getting supplies, keeping supplies, managing your group of survivors by leading them well. Read the RPS link they go into depth about the game it sounds pretty deep and amazing.

I am sick of all you kids whining about zombie games. Seriously, nobody whines when a space marine FPS comes out, or if a realstic FPS comes out. The truth is there hasn't been a zombie game done right. It is all on the level of cheesy kill so many zombies with machine guns. A game that doesn't focus on the zombies instead uses them as a plot tool will be the game that gets it right. Dead Rising was on that level, but a game that incorporates survival, LIKE THIS ONE. Will be awesome.
Anyways I think the zombie hatred is just people jumping on the band wagon in hating them. Truth is the zombie game market isn't as oversaturated as WW2, Space Marine, REALISTIC combat FPS genres have become.

Uh.. I kinda hate the zombie-defense/survival-gore-er genre. Slapping Troika onnit doesn't do a thing for me. Obsidian is so far removed from any highly-regarded games (Fallout, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate) that their name is a curse to me.
Zombies are the new dead "World War II" horse (the horse formerly known as Space Marines), and there's not much you can do to revive that theme, other than throwing some Bruce Campbell up-ins. Or maybe have a SWAT team involved.
