Mod at your own risk: How to put an old Xbox 360 HDD into Xbox 360 S
69
We're no good with screwdrivers -- OK, well, some of us are -- so we'd probably never attempt to mod our shiny new 4GB Xbox 360 S by fitting an old hard drive in it. If you're braver than us (very likely), feel free to check out the step-by-step guide past the break, which pulls back the curtain on the magical process of techno-wizardy fueling this hybrid of form and frugality.

or you could just buy an S with an HDD...
or a 4GB S and then an HDD that actually fits it later (they have these)...

I'll wait until the holidays when the Kinect bundles come out. If nobody is being banned, then I will pick up the 4 gb slim and use my old hard drive.
Would be kind of ridiculous to get banned for using a Microsoft licensed hard drive. I guess removing the hard drive from the enclosure is breaking the TOS.

Microsoft should sanction this fix, if they are smart. It would encourage more Xbox owners to upgrade to the S model if they could keep their old drive. They should even provide the sleds themselves.

Haha, this is the best video I have seen in a long while! Opening the old hard drive case with a hammer and then proceeding to use pliers to pull it out of the new 360 slim - classic! And the aiming "instructions" ("aim it in between these points right here") were just the icing on the cake. Finally, I love that he accidentally drops the drive inside the slot, comments on it and _still_ publishes the video. Hats off to this 1337 mod!

umm, can't we just take the sled off Slim HDD then plop the old drive into it? or is the sled on the new Slim HDD stuck on it?

@killer rin
the 4GB model doesn't come with a sled in the HDD port, so there isn't one to use.

Sorry, this idiot lost all credibility when he said he opened his original 360 20GB HDD with a hammer. There are better ways to get that case open. A hammer is not a valid method unless you want to crash your drive and make it completely useless.

Sweet, gonna do this when I get home. I was wondering if it would work, but I didn't feel like finding out by myself that it wouldn't. And don't be silly, Joystiq, this isn't going to void anyone's hard drive.
I'm gonna pad the hard drive with heavy Styrofoam to make sure it doesn't take damage.

Tested.com (sister site to Giant Bomb) showed this working in a much more professional way back at the launch of the new console.

A peripheral company should just create an external HDD dock with a sled that slides into the 360S with SATA Connectors.....
Or create a conversion kit for old 360 HDD to be installed for use with the S.
Personally I think this would boost S model sales as those of us with launch 360s that haven't red ringed (cross fingers) are dying to upgrade as we know its just a matter of time.

@(Unverified) Considering that this actually works, they're obviously smarter than you.

yeah this is all well and good, but i guarantee MS is already devising a way to implement a FW that will prevent this sort of thing just like they did when people figured out the HDDs were just plain ol' SATA drives and were popping in 500GB drives, so they introduced that FW that would only allow you to access memory up to what they were offering at retail with their branded drives. money grubbing pricks.
