You know the saying, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Or in this case, forgiveness than dealing with all the shit that is involved with delaying a game four months.

Yeah, or dealing with all the shit involved when you ship a product that doesn't work as advertised.

After talking a whole bunch of shit about other companies that don't release "finished products." Tends to make your developer look like a bunch of incompetent hypocrites.

But surely the beloved Stardock cannot be at fault! They represent indie gaming....because they're pretty much the only ones left.

"A large patch issued last night is said to have fixed the frequent crashes, though it also made tactical battles unplayable."

"Additionally, multiplayer servers are said to be running, but the mode won't be turned on until sometime next week due to "team exhaustion," a rep on the game's forums said."

This is a pretty unbelievable attitude for a commercial product.

@Uncontrol Not so unbelievable, when you consider the usual, soul destroying stuff that happens in the game industry. Crunch time is very stressful. They probably could have fixed the game entirely, given another week, but more likely they would have added even more bugs from being so goddamn mentally exhausted, and could possibly have lost several experienced people in the process.

They pulled the same shit with Demigod.

Stardock only published Demigod, it was developed by Gas Powered Games, which I believe is a thoroughly independent developer.

Yeah, because the videogame industry is obviously the only one in which people ever have to work hard or face difficult challenges to create a product.

Hmm....what would we say if Boeing told us that their aircraft might not be airworthy because of "team exhaustion"? Building airplanes is HARD, after all, right? Almost as hard as making videogames that work! Clearly mere human beings can't be expected to do something properly AND on time!

Stardocks bill of rights says
2. Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state.

Funny how they removed it from their site

Personally, I've had no problems, and I've been playing since before the day 0 patch.

As far as PC Gamer goes, the article was more of a personal rant than any sort of review of the game. I reading "I feel this... I think that... I.. I.." More of an opinion piece about the author's personal feelings towards Stardock and the CEO than any relevant information about the game.

Could it be smoother? Absolutely. But so far I'm having a really good time. Its like Civilization meets Might and Magic. And since Civ 4 and Kings Bounty are two of my favorite games, I'm right at home.

@Average Gatsby

A good review IS a personal opinion piece based on personal feeling. If I want information, I read the back of the box. If I want to know if the game will be fun or not, I seek opinions.

This was their anti piracy protection. The majority of the pirates don't want to have to hunt down cracked updates for a gimped game.

On the original PC Gamer post:

That post was not a post from a videogame journalist. That post was from a gamer troll. The overtones of the post is not a “news” update, but rather a flame fest. Poor form Mr. Tom Francis, poor form. He sounds like Jim Sterling, not an informed journalist who should know to stay away from bias.

Also, Elemental is not a bad game at all. It is not as broken as the post would lead you to believe, imo its not broken at all. You also have to take into account that: 1. Stardock is approaching development on this game like that of an MMO. Meaning, support for years in terms of updates, fixes, expansions. 2. Most of the problems are coming from Nvidia users. For one I find it maniacally amusing that for once Nvidia is getting the short end of the stick on a pc game instead of ATI users.

I was under the impression it was ATI users who were having problems. I have had no problems with my 8800 GTS.

@darksied It seems that according to Joystiq's poll, as of now, 65% aren't even running into bugs. So I'm guessing you could easily be in that majority.

My god, only 35% of the people who bought a product are having it operate incorrectly!

If only Stardock could make their game 20% more reliable, it would be almost as dependable as the launch Xbox 360!

What pathetically low standards people have in this industry for a finished, polished product.

Thank god that there are developers like Blizzard around that acknowledge the importance of releasing a truly finished game, rather than some piece of shit that has to be patched for 2 years to work as intended. Strange coincidence that they're also pretty much the only successful PC developers now, outside of Valve, who have a similar philosophy.

It would be awesome if I could see the results of the poll without voting, I don't have the game yet, so I can't give a valid answer, but I would like to see what others are experiencing, so I can decide whether or not I should wait...

The game does feel a little rushed. I did get occasionnal crashes and bugs. I agree that the game would need a few more patch to fix some of the issues.

In the end though, I love the game. The bugs aren't any worst than other much higher profile games being released with game stoping bugs from much bigger publisher/developpers. I think this one is getting more attention because of Brad's Gamer's bill of rights. People seems to forget that Stardock are pioneer of the online distribution of games and their stand on ZERO DRM on their games is a rare feat that should be celebrated, not brought down.

My biggest issue is that Demigod shared a lot of the same problems. Why are they not varying their testing hardware?

I'm so torn. I love Stardock and think Brad Wardell is great. GalCiv2 is one of those "Desert Island" games you want to always have around.

But this...this game is just not of the same quality we've come to expect. I'm really hoping the next week bring some big improvements, or my faith in the Little Company That Could will be severely tested.

There's one in every thread. You people have been screaming about the death of PC games for like a decade now, it's worse than Y2K and 2012. I can just see it now, it's the year 2054 and as Civ XXVIII for PC is released somebody logs in into the matrix and starts talking about the death of PC games, and how it'll happen any day now. :)

PC gaming is Blizzard and Valve.

Mostly Blizzard, too. Not that I'm complaining.

Oh, and the Total War series, because its awesome.

I do find it funny that they make a big deal about a "gamers bill of rights", with their right to a finished product at release - and then patch in a tutorial two days after release, while holding off on multi-player functionality because they're just too tired to get it together (most likely not the dev teams fault, but rather bad planning from up above).

My problem is that it feels like an indie product with a commercial price tag. And yes I bought it, and yes I experienced pretty much every problem people are screaming about. Ultimately "unfinished" would be the most obvious word to summarize the issue.
