Why inFamous got a new Cole (and why he was changed back)
70
You know, we never thought that our joke about New Orleans' heat (well, fake New Orleans) would hold much water in the reasoning behind Cole's new, jacket-less look in inFamous 2, but it turns out that's a big part of the logic. "New Marais is a city in the south: it's hot, it's humid, there's no way he can keep his leather jacket on, not for 10 minutes. So one of the decisions was to remove the jacket and put him in a T-shirt," Sucker Punch art director Mathias Lorenz said in a recent interview. Another factor, Lorenz says, was the addition of more complex parkour to inFamous 2. "I wanted to show off his body more rather than have his jacket hide his muscles," Lorenz explained.
Alongside the fresh moves, Sucker Punch enlisted the help of a new voice actor who could also do motion capture work for the sequel's 3D cutscenes. Thusly, to make the voiceover work appear more natural, the new look also reflected that voice actor's real-life looks. As we already heard, however, the decision after E3 was to revert Cole almost entirely back to his original, messenger bag-toting form. But why? "When we revealed Cole at E3 2010, we were taken aback by the uproar of fan support for the original Cole," Lorenz says. Though the folks at Sucker Punch weren't expecting such a backlash, "we listened to our fans and went back and took the best of everything to end up with the design we have settled on now." And there you have it -- don't go asking for the jacket to come back, though. It's simply too hot.

@Ospov I liked that he had hair, instead of the cliche shaved head look. They should have kept old Cole's face, with some hair.

@MrAlex I like the tattoos and the pants. I agree about the hair, too. It wasn't even a lot of hair, but bald is...meh.

I preferred new Cole, old Cole was plain and boring Bald Character #23598924385.

Every time I hear a comment like this I can't help but feel that the commenter didn't play Infamous. I mean Cole wont win any awards for best character, but he was still cool. He had a sort of dark humor aura about him a la Sam Fisher. Regardless of whether or not you liked him or not, doesn't completely changing the character in a game break the immersion for you? Doesn't that make you feel like you are playing a different game set in a different universe?

Well put, changing the look of someone so drastically very much messes with the immersion factor. Also, the old Cole looked like a badass, the now defunct redesign made him look like a pretty boy. So bravo to Sucker Punch for listening to the fans.

You're not the only one that thought of Cole like that. Otherwise Infamous was still a good game. Would've been interesting to see how the 2nd game would have turned out to be with Cole's new look. There had to be a good reason to change his look.

( example ) imagine if Kratos had the hair of Lady GaGa it just wouldn't be the same cause we know Kratos with no Hair. i'm glad they changed Cole back to his original way and now the heat being involed i'm guessing he has chill like powers too keep col or something ( i'm not watching videos and looking at more photos too see his new powers or how he gets them if their is any, as i want it left to surprise or whatever when i play the game ) so of course Hot VS Cold sorta thing may happen in this game so it will be interesting. can't wait till the game is out this will be great.

I think the older Cole just worked better. Say you're looking for the kind of guy who would do bad things for the good of the city (hint hint, spoiler, hint), a brooding guy like older Cole would do it. The new one just didn't feel that way to me. The new old Cole might be a good compromise, I need to see more of him to really know.

I think there will forever be a divide between old Cole fans and old new Cole fans. Old Cole did nothing for me, which is why I've decided never to play the first game. I just don't want to spend countless hours playing as someone I can't relate to at all. Now, that's not to say I can relate that much more to a character like old new Cole, but I was more willing to check out inFamous 2 because of how that Cole looked.
I don't know what to think now. I don't like old Cole at all and now that he's pretty much back, I don't really know yet what this has done to my interest in the game. I think Sucker Punch may have lost some new prospective fans (perhaps like myself) with the re-redesign.

@Grey Chalk it up to first impressions. I chose not to bother "getting to know" him.

@NathanDTS To each his own. I didn't say I'm counting the sequel out altogether...it's just gonna take a little more to convince it's worth money out of my wallet.

@(Unverified) I think they actually avoided a divide between old Cole fans and new Cole fans by releasing both games with the same characters. There is a lot of people out there that don't visit Joystiq or Kotaku everyday and even the ones that do haven't seen enough of second version Cole to have gotten used to him.
I say give Infamous a chance, is a really good game and you like it more and more as you play it. I don't think I can relate to Kratos, Mario, or Sonic the hedgehog, but when you try and like the games you end up liking the characters too..

@NathanDTS Maybe he likes saving his money a whole lot. If anything turns him off about a game, that game automatically goes off his Buy list.

@Guts It's really not that hard to make a whole new cole, how do you think they can make skins for games as DLC? It's pretty simple one you have the Model Sheet to Model it and use all the animations, you just can't loose the body proportions, or else you can screw all your animations, but even in that case there's always a way.

old Cole kind of reminded me of Puck, the only interesting character to ever be on The Real World. also, he was not bald, he had short blond hair.

@Vcize true, and I like the jacket look. I think that if we can accept that a person can have electric powers and monsters roam the city then seeing someone wearing a jacket can't be that far from the realms of reality.

I actually liked the new Cole better, but either way I'm happy. The thing that bothers me is the ringer t-shirt they put on the character, I actually preferred the v-neck t-shirt that was on the new Cole. Maybe it's because I work at a clothing store, but it's just one detail that is bothering me lol.

I can answer the question for him: because Sucker Punch are public-pleasing pussies. They changed him because their fans thought he was too generic, then changed him back because they didn't liked it. Design-by-committee never yields a good product, especially not when "the internet" is a prominent member of the committee.

No man, gameplay is a measure of a good product.. not character models. There's nothing wrong with pleasing the majority of your fans with tweaks that don't affect the overall gameplay.
