Microsoft has said that it plans to improve the technical quality of voice communication across Xbox Live through a system update, set to arrive this fall. The update, which Eurogamer reports will coincide with the November launch of Kinect, will upgrade the audio codec that handles all of your online chatting, strategizing and your mothering. [Update: Major Nelson has also confirmed the change in codec with Joystiq.]
Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Xbox Live Europe general manager Jerry Johnson explained that the basic codec had originally required just a 64k connection. "It's time for us to move on," he said. "Especially if we want to think about broadening - a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment."
Johnson's next statement, which suggested that general quality of Xbox Live communication would be improved by sending every subscriber a copy of "Dude, That's Rude! (Get Some Manners)," was inaudible.

The biggest problem I have with Live chat is the SNR, as soon as you get over 3 people in a chat the signal to noise ratio becomes so bad that it's just constant hissing. Upgrading the quality will hopefully mean better dynamics and a much clearer party chat.
I've never had a problem with the MS headsets but I did invest in a set of Turtle Beach X31s for late night gaming and the chat is much better. However, not very useful when gaming during the day using the TV speakers for game audio.
As for updating, I have all the current consoles and the PS3 is very annoying. All these updates and they mess them up so often too... MS may only do one big one a year but at least it's generally well coded. How many PS3s were killed by the recent cock up by Sony?
Anyway, well done MS, hopefully they'll improve a few more features too.

Yeah, by the way - I hope you like the Metro UI.
Because you will be seeing a lot more of it when this update hits.

It will be nice not to have to use Skype to get decent audio quality with my friends on Xbox Live.

I've never had a voice so crackly that it was annoying.
Perhaps they could keep the lower bandwidth around,
as an option for people with slower connections?

@KingOfGods The sound quality is TERRIBLE for voice on the xbox, especially when you compare it to the quality of stuff like ventrilo.

I hate the sound of the head sets that are branded by microsoft. They sound horrible, and I personally went through two this year. I take care of my equipment but these stupid things keep breaking.
I have a custom setup I use. I have a pair of Grado labs SR60 headphones I use for audio, I have the chat set to play through the speakers so my reciver sends the chat to my head phones.
I then have a nice belkin professional office phone head seat that I plug into the controller to use as my mic. (bought it for $10 on clearance) This easily sits over the top of the grados.
The mic on the belkin sounds way better and my fan blowing on me does not make it sound like I sit in a windstorm while playing.
