Left 4 Dead born from Valve's killed 'flying fairy' game
20
"We stabbed it," Valve project manager Erik Johnson tells PC Gamer of the studio's apparent "flying fairy game," as Gabe Newell puts it. The conversation with Valve, which includes marketing director Doug Lombardi, provides revealing insight into the creative process of one of the most respected developers in the industry.
Described as an "action fantasy sort of role playing game" featuring fairies, the project went as far as a working prototype (with spells cast by mouse gesturing) and "it was so bad," says Newell. Still, it was "a useful failure," adds the Valve co-founder, "because It was so clearly dumb that it made us say, 'Okay, what are we actually good at that we can do instead?'" Cue the Zombie Apocalypse!

God dammit. If this flying fairy game was released alongside the Hello Kitty MMO, then this would have been a perfect week for me.

As much as I love L4D1/2 (and still play every day in versus) .. .I gotta admit that Valve don't truely create anything new by themselves.
Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, Portal, L4D. to my knowledge all of these were indie originally then bought out and assimilated into Valve-dom.
And i enjoyed CS + DoD before they went past beta.

@Dextro Turtle Rock had always been under Valve's wing, and when they and the other companies were brought into the fold Valve took key members of their own staff and send them to assist in the projects.
Remember when TF2 didnt have a class patch for half a year because of Left 4 Dead?

I know, I used to play DoD beta 3 and love it (still miss bleeding valve!).
What I meant to say is that I don't bite when they say they failed that fairy game and then went to work on Left 4 Dead since I know for a fact that Turtle Rock announced the game way before the take-over by the Valve Overlords.

Well sure Half-Life is definitely their child hands down. HL2 definitely in number top 10 of all time. But really what else?
@Dextro

@The Spy
So you're saying Team Fortress Classic wasn't theirs (sort of) as well?
