Cryptic not yet sure about pricing plan for new Neverwinter title
11
You D&D buffs out there were undoubtedly excited to hear that a new Neverwinter game is coming to life, but just like the real D&D, it might end up laying a critical hit down on your wallet.
In an interview at Gamasutra, Cryptic CEO Jack Emmert admitted that the game doesn't have a business model nailed down yet, and that all options are still on the table, from a "free-to-play with microtransactions" model to a "pay-by-the-minute" one. Emmert makes the point that asking for a subscription is still a viable way to run an MMO -- he fully expects BioWare to charge subscriptions for The Old Republic -- but that requires meeting a very high standard in terms of its content and quality.
Of course, Neverwinter is described more as a "co-op experience" than an MMO, and Emmert says it is indicative of a "new direction for Cryptic." Instead of worrying about MMO standards and traditions, he says, Cryptic wants to "just make great games." Specifically, that means "no more 75 Metacritic scores," he jokes at the end of the interview. "My heart just can't take it anymore."

@Guts
Relax dude, they haven't even revealed any details. Also, it sounds like you contradicted yourself. By being pay by the minute you wouldn't have to be obligated to play that month because you only pay when you actually play. I think that would cater more to you more than anything. I don't know exactly how much you would actually pay each minute, but I doubt it would be anything ridiculous. I don't think it would anything more than a cent.

I didn't even pay by the minute for dial up, back in the days when that was popular, preferring subscription dial up, so I'd definitely never do it with a game. It'd make sense for a game that has already hooked people into playing long hours, but not for a new game, and even then I'd not want to pay by the minute.

Pay by the minute is interesting, APB uses it.. and whilst my friends have paid for more subs, i'ms till with the freely given 50hrs...
Its an interesting option for those that work....
But its weird, pay for a large largless server, cool..but.. no extra content fast is a bit iffy... lets hope it goes like Global Agenda and free to play ^_~

I don't know what he's talking about with 'no more 75s', as neither Champions Online or STO have managed that mark yet. Maybe he just means nothing below that, which I would be extremely skeptical about.
The fact that they potentially want a subscription for a game where they are going out of their way to not classify as an MMO but as a OMG, online multiplayer game, goes to show that they don't really have a clue what gamers actually want. Like someone said previously, we had two Neverwinter games before, we didn't have to pay for multiplayer. If they intend to make you pay monthly for this, it better be a game of amazing quality...something that I have not actually seen from a Cryptic game to date.
Shooting for the stars is fine, but they haven't hit anywhere close yet.

Pricing plan for a "co-op experience"?
Personally I went through:
1. Play another Neverwinter game: Hell yeah!
2. Cryptic is making it: Let's see the reviews then...
3. PRICING PLAN: Haha, what, no really? Hah!
I'll continue supporting Guild Wars instead, it has always been good value. But good luck with that there thing you've got going, Cryptic :o)
