In a recent interview with Develop, FreeStyleGames creative director Jamie Jackson recounted the emotional rollercoaster ride the studio went through from the announcement to the release of their ambitious mixmastering sim, DJ Hero. Well, using that metaphor, said rollercoaster would be awfully boring -- everything leading up to the game's release only served to bring the studio down. Jackson explained, "when the first news of the game came out, and everyone slagged it off, the whole studio was depressed, because we'd given our life to it." (Yeah, sorry about that.)
Jackson explained that morale was low in the following months -- that is, until the universally positive reviews started pouring in. "Everyone else's opinion on the game had just turned during the release," Jackson said. "When the review scores came in that just changed the mood of the studio dramatically." We're sure the 1.2 million sales over the following eight months didn't hurt either.

DJ Hero was a good game and FreeStyleGames did a great job. It's not their fault that Activision is doing their best to ruin the "Hero" brand... But I can understand the hard position they were put in.

Fantastic work on the first game, I'm a little disappointed in the DLC support and track list for DJ Hero 2 (seriously you chose one of the worst Daft Punk songs Human After All as the ONLY Daft Punk song for DJ Hero 2....)

Human After All is weak, everything else is solid. And no one can touch their live mixes which make the repetitive Human After All tracks amazing somehow. Alive 1997 is some of the best electronica one could ever listen to.

@ZombieRobot I'm hoping beyond hope that the ENTIRE setlist from the first can be imported into DJ Hero 2. That would solve your dillemna with not enough Daft Punk...they pretty much exhausted their repertoire on the first one. Although there are more mixes that can be made using their songs. Just ask Bustah Rhymes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNSxVaqp-8w&ob=av2e

I had to wait a few months to get it, the only disappointing thing would be the fact that it costs so much money, and to get another dj controller would cost the almost the amount of a new game. I really like this game, but I don't think I will be investing anymore money into the series. I really wish it was cheaper :/

Two weeks ago Best Buy was selling the extra controller for $20.
This last week Toys R Us was selling the kit, game and controller, for 19.99.
If you think that DJ Hero is too expensive you haven't really been looking.
Now, finding a Bass Guitar for Rockband, THAT'S expensive.

I just bought DJ Hero the other day, and I love it. It really is a great game.
Also, for a site that is suppose to be written by dedicated gamers, joystiq really does put down like every game for a couple laughs. Maybe cut back on the jokes? I'd be kind of bummed too if I worked so hard on this game just to be laughed at.

Just picked it up the other day on the Toys R Us deal. Really enjoying it. It's interesting to get my ass whipped by a rhythm game again after so many years of just flying through GH/RB games. Definitely looking forward to #2 now. Even though I agree the Daft Punk song on DJH2 is not a good choice, and I still think there's a disturbing lack of Dre and Jay-Z the GaGa songs will be a ton of fun to mix.

at least we have a little Dr. Dre this time around! I just really hope they do better DLC support. I don't want to buy a DJ Hero 3 but I guarantee I will spend over the price of a $60 game if there is constant DLC.
