You could buy this PlayStation 3, this Xbox 360, or two of these Nintendo Wiis. You could get two beautiful sets of Global chef's knives. Heck, you could even purchase a top of the line netbook! Or you could buy a sweater with Mario on it made by the developer of Earthbound. For 435 dollars.
The choice is yours.

I don't know a single person who would pay that much for a sweater. I would only pay that much if Jesus wore it and wearing it gives you super powers.

I feel bad to say this, but I would buy this sweater. It wouldn't even be that expensive compared to some of the other things I buy. So, remember, there is always a market.

Aye but you could probably buy the materials and employ someone to make this sweater for you for less than it costs.

There are plenty of sweaters *without* Mario on that cost more than $435...
As to whether that's a reasonable price, my question would be - if it's really hand-knit (catalogue claims so on cover, don't know if it applies to this particular item) - where's it made? Because if it's actually made in, say, Japan, then that's pretty cheap (think how long it'd take somebody to knit that, I don't knit but I'm guessing a long time, now multiply by a halfway reasonable hourly rate, now add designer's and retailer's markup).
On the other hand if it's made in a sweatshop then it's certainly overpriced - no surprise there, just like most designer clothing.
If it's made in a low-wage country but in good quality and under some kind of decent working conditions (unlikely unless it specifically claims to be 'fairtrade') then I guess the price is borderline - I just looked up in a fairtrade clothing company website, handknit cardigans with named designer seem to be about $200. (Sans Mario.)
Summary: find out where it came from and then you can decide whether it's overpriced - or a reasonable price for what it is. Either way, it's pretty expensive, and also kind of ugly imo. (The models both look good in it, but that's more because um, they both look good in the first place.)

Even if it came from Japan, that doesn't make it worth its price.
You do realize that those sweaters that are over the $435 price mark, are priced that way due to the designer "thinking their design is worth the price", it's made of friggin' gold (I've actually seen one in a gift shop in Las Vegas), or there's diamonds on it!!
It doesn't cost that much for anything hand-knit! It doesn't matter the time spent on that thing, I've seen people spend more time on a quilt that sold for $40 than the design of that thing.
Look, as a person who has actually knit and sewn clothes, it takes about the price range of $15-$60 to buy the supplies for that sweater (depending on the quality of fabric and if there's a sale), and it would take a minimum of a single 24 hours to complete it, a month if you're lazy.
Fact is, most clothes above the $120 ARE overpriced! This isn't a friggin' cos-play costume (of which are priced around the $200-$600 range, and are worth their price due to the complexity of the design + durability of the fabric and sewing), it's a friggin' sweater! It IS overpriced! Even if it came from Japan (and I've bought custom-made sweaters there before), it's STILL overpriced.
Only way this thing isn't overpriced is if this thing is a limited edition creation... meaning the designer is only making a handful of them.

But then you couldn't say you were dumb enough to pay a designer $435 for a sweater someone else could make for a fraction of the price.
For that cost, I'd expect a sweater, fellatio from Angelina Jolie and a rim job from Brad Pitt (what?)

I think that sweater is pretty dope, and if I was a fantastically rich asshole, I'd probably buy it.
But I'm a poor asshole, so I'll continue going to Value Village.
