Yamauchi: Gran Turismo 5 has optional 10GB install
102
Yesterday, while answering Gran Turismo 5 fans' questions via his Twitter feed, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi made a fairly startling announcement. Though the game will only require a 256MB pseudo-install on the PS3 hard drive in order to be playable, Yamauchi suggests players reserve 10GB of HDD space for the smoothest possible gameplay experience.
Yamauchi's 140-character missive wasn't able to explain exactly why the game has two install options, or how much of an improvement the 10GB installation would offer. Not that this should matter much to folks who own a newer PS3 with a beefier hard drive -- though folks with one of the older 20GB models probably have a few difficult deletion decisions to make if they pick up Gran Turismo 5 when it launches November 2.

True stories. Though its hardly as bad as you make out, If you don't support the proprietary HDDs, don't buy them from a store.
I got my white 250GB HDD new from eBay at £43 delivered, by comparison a regular 250 GB HDD would cost around £30. It's bad, but its not terrible.

Okay let's see, I can get a 1 TB hard drive (3.5") for $75 ($60 after rebate, but let's ignore that). Or I can get a 16 GB flash drive for $23 on a "DEAL OF THE DAY".
$0.075/GB (worst case, $0.06 best case) vs. $1.44/GB (best case).
The reason I used a 3.5" drive for comparison is because you can still use one as an external hard drive with just a converter. For a 2.5 inch drive that you'd actually directly hook in (had MS allowed it), it's like $50 for 500GB, so something like $0.10/GB.
Anyway, just because you can afford it doesn't make it cheap. I could spend $1000 on a hamburger if I were rich, but that doesn't make it cheap if McDonalds is still selling them for a dollar.

True, but the nice thing about the 360 option is that you can move it across multiple consoles. It's really annoying to have to copy and transfer all your save data through some annoying process when you want to continue playing your game on a PS3 in the other room.

Is taking the 20 seconds to copy a save file from the PS3 to a USB drive that annoying? The amount of copy protected save files are very few, however it is certainly annoying when a publisher/developer decides to "protect" their save data.

Yeah like assassin's creed... I had to delay my gaming for a month when I went to my parents house (they have a PS3 for blu-ray). I was almost finishing the game before my trip, and when I tried to copy the game it was protected! Damn... that was a whole month thinking about ezio... I almost started the game all over again, but didn't have the pacience to collect everything again...

@Vcize The ps3 encrypts the drive..
Each ps3 has a unique hardware encryption key (from what I understand) and it encrypts the drive based on that key so the internal hard drive will only ever work for that console.. (Fat lot of good that is considering the new usb jig crack, but its been uncrackable for nearly 4 years now which is pretty amazing for a games console still )
On the plus side though you can just link a crossover between 2 ps3s and copy everything across between them and they both always will have a drive, so both of them can be used at the same time and you can game share with up to 3 different ps3s I think as your PSN account can be linked to 3 different ps3s.
On the ps3 you can also connect a 2TB external drive if you want and copy across your saves your music etc and just plug it in.. You obviously cant copy actual games across or encrypted saves, but there is nothing stopping you from duplicating drives using a crossover cable between the 2 ps3s..
Its a design philosophy I personally prefer the ps3 method as your own files your pictures, films, music etc remain independant of the games console and can be connected to any device you want or to any ps3.. The reason I say this is in Europe we have had PlayTV for a couple of years now at least and I have recorded a crazy amount of tv shows using it and I move them across onto a larger external drive and free up my console for games and at the same time can play the mpeg streams on my computer if I want to, really the best of both worlds.
Can you game share on the 360 ? Does the 360 allow you to link your gold account to multiple 360s and allow you to download your games collection to them? Sorry not sure how the 360 equivalent works.

Of course, 360 fanboys will say that you can mod any hard drive to fit into the casing, but to me, if you have to go through the hassle, the system's already broken.

@Fallow Damn it my 80 GB is almost full, good thing I can buy a 320 GB hd for $45. This is part of the reason I give more love to my PS3, I can get a cheap hd and not have to pay to play online.

Come on man get real the Move, Kinect and WiiMote suck ass for adding motion sensing to racing.. Simply because racing has had motion sensing forever its called a wheel and pedals..
If you got money to burn check this:

or this :

and this review:

If you want to feel like your driving a real car this is your best bet, The Logitech G27. Not Kinect sorry and this is only PC and PS3 compatible and will work with GT5, the videos above is with GT5 Prologue, so no doubt the GT5 controls with this will be tight..
This is how you drive , not with your hands held out pretending to hold a steering wheel.

I'll also be installing. 10 GB doesn't mean much of anything because I have over 200 gb.

The only reason why it's a good investment because basically all games have a mandatory install & hog up HDD space when it should be optional in the first place. I don't want to wait to play my games, I'd rather pop in the disc, play it & if I want to, install it later. It shouldn't be up to the develpoer.

@Prboi its not a mandatory install ? Its an optional 10GB install..
What was the last game you played that needed a mandatory install ? Sure the 1st gen games had that issue but none of the recent games have required an install that I can remember..

Well I get annoyed when I get down voted yet nobody has the balls to argue with me. Last time I got down voted was because I said that MW2 is a faster paced game compared to MOH & BFBC2 simply because it's framerate is faster yet I got down voted without anybody trying to argue & proove me wrong. Anoother time was because I said I think Epic Mickey should be on 360 & PS3 s well as the Wii.

Oh baw harder.
Downvoting is a system that is meant to show people's opinions. You didn't get downvoted for being incorrect, you got downvoted because people didn't agree with you.
Some people don't want to argue, so they just hit downvote and continue to scroll. I don't agree with your opinion about installs, seeing as they are almost all optional now. Even more, it speeds up the game significantly from what I've seen. I'll be installing the full 10 gigs on my PS3, it's definitely worth it; this game has been on my wishlist for ages now.

On PS3 articles, saying anything negative about the PS3 gets you downvoted. Vice versa on 360 articles.
Welcome to the human race.

To be fair, it's not just most 1st gen games. Unless I'm missing something here, both Split/Second and Bioshock 2 required a nice chunk of space each before I could play them, and that's just off the top of my head.

Sounds like a similar situation to what you had with GT on PSP. You didn't have to install it, but you would have load times that gave you enough time to kill a man, hide the body, and come up with an unbreakable alibi before you could start racing.
