Mafia 2 unlikely to be profitable, Pachter says
74
According to Michael Pachter, Mafia 2 sales appear unlikely to recoup the cost of the game's six-year development period. The Wedbush analyst told Gamasutra that "consumer interest appears to be waning" for 2K Games' crime drama.
Mafia 2 currently holds the #43 position on Amazon's Video Game Bestsellers list, one week after release. In comparison, Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption faced regular shortages when it was first released and sold five million units in just three weeks' time.
Take-Two will update its investors with the company's latest financial results later this week. In addition to confirming sales figures, Pachter expects "the company to announce a shift in release dates for LA Noire out of 2010 and into 2011." Now ... wouldn't that be surprising?

If Mafia 2 was sold at retail for $25, I would purchase it.

of course , what you guys expect from a game that use the same "GTA" idea
with a Mafia touch , nothing more than that , people are tired of those games.

The problem wasn't that it was too similar to GTA, but that there were way too many gameplay problems. The camera in buildings felt wierd, you couldn't blindfire behind cover, button mapping on the PS3 was terrible with no option to change it, driving for most of the game as opposed to good gameplay and an ending that didn't feel complete. That's why it won't be profitable. However the musical score is pretty awesome.

I've noticed a lot of complaints about how much driving there is.
On the podcast, Chris couldn't shut his f-in' trap about it. He gave me the impression that any game that requires you to control a 4 wheeled vehicle for any length of time would make his skin crawl.
I love driving. I love driving games. Driving is about the only thing I find redeemable in GTA4 (at least the expansions have decent stories). The problem with driving in Mafia 2 is... its awful.
The cars are landboats. Real cars don't feel like that. They never did.

I think this style of game just needs something done. There is nothing different between all of these types of games, except something like inFamous or Red Faction: gangstas or gangsters shooting people, driving, and shooting people while driving. Gets boring after a while.

Played the demo on both 360 and PS3, the visuals looked better on 360 but the indoor combat seemed smoother on PS3. Reviews about the open world not having much was why I didn't preorder. It's like they tried too much to not be like GTA, where RDR embraced the open world mini-games and side quest mechanics. Might pick Mafia 2 up later tho.

Demo was terrible and I'm highly disappointed because I was looking forward to this game and avoided all vids and previews since the intial ones months and months ago.The character movement and driving seemed real bad to me.

Did anyone try the PC version?
Complaints about like of side-missions, lack of variety, and other issues are still valid, but I thought it looked beautiful and ran wonderfully smooth on the PC. It's one of the prettiest open world games out there.
Also, while it wasn't shockingly original, the combat was solid and fun. I was pretty impressed by the demo.

Yes, I am playing the PC version, and it is definitely one of the best streaming engines I've seen so far - way above the steaming pile of goo that was GTA4 PC. The game itself may be unoriginal gameplay-wise, and the story relies too much on clichés, but the missions are actually quite varied, and there have been several very cool moments in the game so far - I won't spoil them here.
I think a game like this is hit hard by reviews because most reviewers are, understandably, quite fatigued with playing games. They play so many, that the only ones which truly stand out are those that bring a lot of originality. But, sometimes, a game is just a good game, even if it has been done before. And this one is.

The game is awesome. It's a single player experience, but the world is open during missions, which is great instead of letting the CPU send you to each mission spot. People really confuse this with what a GTA open world is like. This isn't trying to be that. The final build was improved on from the demo so stop droppin' bombs on a game when all you have played was the demo. I will never understand the crap this game has gotten when other games that are worse, get higher scores and more praise. Give it a try at least but word of mouth from people who only played the demo and/or never played the game and are basing their views from others is just going to spoil it for others. I don't care if you pay $60 or $6 for this game, it's worth every buck for the unbias.

That is why the industry needs a more flexible pricing structure. You can't expect an average game to sell at $60 when there are a plethora of games worth the full price tag.

I preordered this game from Amazon and almost a week after release still haven't received it yet. Last time I do that. I thought it would be here last Wednesday/Thursday tops. I was very excited about it but the constant bad reviews which I usually don't listen to and the waiting for it has given me slight buyer's remorse. Maybe that will change when I play it

I played both RDR and Mafia 2 and both were pretty lackluster. Although I think Mafia 2 did some things better like having more of a story than that very shallow story that RDR had. Also for all that complaining about drving the car so much there was also a lot of riding a horse in RDR that was just as tedious.
The only reason I think RDR sold, wasn't because it was a great game, but due to the recognizability of the Rockstar brand, if Mafia 2 had that I think it would have sold more.

Well, as somebody who has actually played the game, I definitely think most of the reviews were unreasonably harsh. It's not innovative or revolutionary, but it's definitely a good game - if you are even the slightest interested in the period (40's - 50's), or mafia stories in general, I can recommend it. Sad to see these predictions.

@szimm I agree with you - this game is pretty good. There are some valid points; there is a bit of driving and without side missions, the open world lacking little interaction, it may be more evident driving is about all you do. But there is gunplay in thrown in, and the story and voice acting is great. They did a good job with the 1950s setting - this will be one of the more memorable games I've played.
But to be honest, $60 is a hard pill to swallow. I feel the price point is best at $40 max. I really hope they sell enough, to get motivated to do a Mafia 3. It would be perfect for those gaming droughts.
