As Guild Wars 2 preps for its US hands-on debut at PAX this weekend, we followed up with NCsoft about the current state of the series. The publisher informed us that the original Guild Wars has now sold over 6.5 million units. Roughly half of those copies found homes in Europe, with Germany making up the largest fan base, which is why the publisher debuted hands-on gameplay for the sequel at this year's Gamescom.
As for Guild Wars 2's speculated release window, NCsoft is taking the Blizzard approach to the game's launch status and saying "when it's done." A representative for the company told us an MMO -- even one like Guild Wars 2 that is going down a different path -- can't be released nowadays until it's finished. It's a lesson NCsoft learned harshly through Tabula Rasa. Hopefully the eventual launch of Guild Wars 2 will wipe the slate clean of that painful memory.

I uhhh.....what? No.
Is this even going to be an actual MMO, unlike the instanced essentially solo player (but no additional cost!) first Guild Wars?

its one of the guild wars smurfs aka asuras. in the demo devs were playing them, steering some kind of electric golem, actually sitting with an asura inside the golem.
demo was great, still anet has a lot of work to do to keep their big promises.
CAN NOT WAIT FOR GW2 TO DESTROY MY SOCIAL LIFE!
yes, i have one. other people tell lies, don´t listen to them.

noone knows what they are doing with GW2 yet. They have announced 15 different ways it could play, and No one knows which is true. Sadly it's hard to bank on gameplay footage because it could easily be instances or open world. Either way the games gonna be fun.
@dakoe3 wow killer? Maybe, but what about SWtOR killer? Hmmm now that's the real question

You mean aside from the gameplay demo's they had for people to play at Gamescom? They'll be at PAX as well. Instances are used for your characters personal story moments, and possibly certain other quests..
But the majority of the game is completely persistant. Even without the demo's, they've said this since day 1.

guys, it´s open world. instances are made sometimes for your story to unfold. in the demo you could run around through the whole damn world and meet other players everywhere. there are a lot of information out there about it, try guildwars2.com for instance.
this shows again that gw2 gets far too few attention by the stiq. you guys are just not informed here :/
at least the german fanbase is well informed.
but you guys get to know that "other m" comes with a 20$ refund on motion plus. cheers.

Having played through GW and its expansions, I see no reason not to buy GW2 day one. I've never played any other games with this much value for the money; only Diablo II comes close. The gaming hours I've posted into the GW games are simply staggering.
You can keep your monthly-fee MMO's, I've never had so much fun online anyway.
Like Mr. Esc I hope they keep the low level cap and skill-hunting/experimentation mechanics of the first one(s).

The level cap's gonna be 80, but it's not gonna be like other MMOs.

@WiiFTW Hmmm, I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm guessing the new level 80 cap is to shut up all the haters who never really got the 'the-20-levels-are-just-a-tutorial-before-the-actual-game-begins' thing.
I'm sure they'll keep it fun, just slightly different this time I guess.

@Mr Esc is the namesarcasm is my
see, this is why i don't listen to other people's opinions of games and just play them myself... If i were someone who never played GW i might be swayed from trying it by this awful description. But being someone who HAS played prophecies and factions, I know just how horrible a ....."review"..... that was.
GW is still one of the best MMO's out as far as performance / gameplay balance.. Probably only second to Aion and WoW. The quests are actually challenging every now and then and have actual outlined objectives rather than "get 10 lion paws". I don't know what game you were playing but "grinding" is something that is near non-existent in GW. The limit on amount of abilities makes strategy more important than in ANY other MMO out. The story may not be on a WoW level, but it gets the job done for a first entry, who plays MMO's for stories though honestly.....
Truthfully the only thing that annoyed me about GW was the lack of free terrain movement, no jumping, ect. but they're adding that to GW2 so bada bing. Please don't put such poison on forums that may steer good gamers from playing good games. I would love to hear your opinion of what a "good" MMO is if GW was so average to you
