It's the Xbox controller with a twist! As indicated by our source, Microsoft has announced a redesigned Xbox 360 wireless controller. The new gamepad will debut in a matte silver color with gray-toned face buttons and analog sticks with a more dramatic concave shape. Key to the new design is a "transforming" D-pad that changes from a semi-flush disc to a pop-out plus sign by twisting the D-pad clockwise. (Check out Major Nelson demonstrating the transformation in the video after the break.)
Microsoft offers this suggestion for how you might use the two D-pad configurations: "Select the traditional plus for distinct cardinal direction movement in games like Halo: Reach to change weapons and perform complicated combinations and deadly finishing moves in Street Fighter games, or rotate the D-pad to the disc format for sweeping motions in games such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2011."
The redesigned controller will only be available with the Play & Charge Kit. The bundle will launch on November 9 for $64.99.

Steps to being pro at fighting games:
1.) Use normal xbox 360 pad, or potentially spend money on crappy street fighter "Fight Pad"
2.) Blame d-pad for your failure.
3.) Buy pretty new twisty dpad controller for $65. Realize that you're playing a shoto character and QCB makes your controller suck again.
4.) Switch characters, realize you're still failing.
5.) Feel like a tool for spending all that when you could've just bought/built a stick.

Does anyone else feel like this is kind of a solution to a problem that doesn't exist? Anyone who's serious about fighting games already owns a fighting stick; controller design is a moot point in the tournament scene.

Yeah, how about just borrowing the (rest of the) dualshock's design by making the D-Pad 4 different buttons?

@iceveiled
it's still one button but but it has seperate slots so it's easier to press

The only thing I don't like about the new controller is the lack of color on the buttons. It will take some getting used to playing those games that require fast reactions when they flash a colored button on the screen.
Aside from that, I'll probably still buy one or two, for the retro games that almost require a D-Pad. Hopefully this controller will make playing Pac-Man CE alot more enjoyable..

Look:
if I can pull off Simple Fireballs From Ryu on Street Fighter with the DPad; I'm SOLD.
if it works with well 2D games; I'm SOLD
if its Sticks like the old Dpad; Money wasted.

I don't know how many others have this issue, but the d-pad for the 360 controller just plain sucks, so here's hopin' this fixes this issue. It won't necessarily mean the difference between me buying or not buying a 360, but as they widdle away at all the glaring issues with the 360, I can see myself owning one, sooner or later.
There's just far more bigger issues to tend to besides the d-pad, unfortunately.
