The Financial Times is reporting that "sources in the media industry" believe Sony will announce a new subscription-based music and video download service, launching initially on PlayStation 3 and PSP before branching out to other Sony devices. An announcement of such a service could be made as early as later today -- the report expects it to be revealed in Berlin at IFA 2010 during Sony's press conference.
Don't expect to see the service by the holidays, though -- FT's sources say it won't be out until sometime next year "as deals are confirmed with all the major labels and studios." We'll be following IFA throughout the day for any announcements, and our friends at Engadget are on the ground in Germany, so keep an eye out for more in the coming hours.

This could be really awesome, or really not awesome depending on how they do it. Big bonus if we could use this service to play music while in-game. No telling how awesome God Of War III would be with some Hall & Oates or Huey Lewis in the background.

I don't care about a video subscription, I have Netflix and Blu-rays for that stuff.
However, a music subscription would be right up my alley. Well, as long as it's nice and full and has plenty of depth - if not, I'll just stick to my go-to option for music purchases, Amazon.

i like how it appears that Sony is slowly changing to a full subscription service (a la xbox live.)
it's pretty smart. if they suddenly went
"hey everybody, PSN now costs money, pay up" everyone would be pissed.
but if they slowly add stuff for subscribers and take away stuff from non subscribers, very few people will complain.
or i could be wrong, but whatever.

@Bravo9zero the joystiq picture says "plusplus"
as in it has 2 plusses, rather than one, making the picture funny.
i wasn't loling at the service (if i had a playstation i'd probably get playstation plus.) i was loling at the picture.

Agreed mate, it seems the way to confuse owners, is to say "look, you get this, this and that, and that, ohhh and that too, if you subscribe"....
..."you get this...." *points at a cardboard box - empty "if you dont subscribe", that way, they still see PSN as free, yet if you pay... you get "ALL THIS!!!!".

As long as it's optional and then they don't raise the price by £10/$ at the start of November it's cool.

I don't get it. People complain "LOL PSN SUCKS XBOX LIVE HAS WAY MORE AND BETTER STUFF" and then when Sony starts adding stuff to it, they complain some more?

yea Canadians are usually last to get things so if this is announced then i doubt we will get that stuff here in Canada so if it is for PS+ members and we don't get it here in Canada i would be Pissed if i was a PS+ member cause then i would be asking Sony for something in return.
but meh it's nice but nothing i'm too interested in.

It's a cloud based music streaming service powered by Qriocity. It is indeed coming to PlayStation 3.

Isn't there a music and/or video service available in the EU/UK region? it's name(s) escape me at the moment, but I think the application/players are free.
I'll pass on this. I use Pandora and/or media hub/streaming from my PS3, or I'll just dump the music onto the HDD.
The only way I'd pay for this particular music service if it somehow allowed custom soundtracks on any game you play (a la Xbox 360).

well, i remember a while back sony marketed the PS3 as a home entertainment system more than just a video game console, and if this service comes by that would be more true than it was 5 years ago
but i like the services they have. i live in a small town where we dont even have a dvd rental store so when the rental service came on my PS3 i was really happy that day.
and PS3 somewhat recognizes facebook but honeslty, facebook and twitter are just going to end up like myspace. forgotten and never used because another website was better than itself.
services on a console is a trend thats going to stay so you might as well get comfortable

From purely a gaming perspective, this is one of, if not the best generation ever. We're all sitting here on backlogs of AAA games that we just can't keep up with.
So this "I wish they'd just focus on gaming" stuff is silly. Gaming is as good as it's ever been. How does this extra stuff hurt you at all? It's certainly not affecting the quality of the pure gaming experience at all.

I don't use any of those facebook/twitter/etc services on my 360. I just don't have this crazy belief that throwing those apps up there real quickly is in any way taking away from gaming, as evidenced by the fact that this is pretty much the best time for pure gaming ever.
As for the XBL price increase, I doubt that has anything to do with facebook. Really, it has more to do with how extraordinary it is that it hasn't increased to this point. XBL was released 6 years ago. Look at what it is now compared to what it was then. And it's the same price as before?
I don't know why people think gaming is different than any other hobby. Look at your other subscription services. How much is your cable bill now vs. how much it cost 6 years ago? How much is your internet bill compared to what it was 6 years ago? The fact that XBL has now increased ONE DOLLAR per month from where it was six years ago (while improving tenfold in that same span) is pretty crazy, and complaining over that is nuts, and just more evidence that gamers are the whiniest group of people you could possibly find as a community.

The best subscription music service is Zune Pass. No way can they beat that. But a movie subscription service where I can rent ANY HD movie I want on PSN with 5.1 sound in NON-STREAMING (i.e. unreliable) fashion would be awesome and should have been included in Plus to begin with.
