Epic Citadel almost looks as good as an Xbox 360 game. I was floored while playing around with it on my iPad. Hopefully things don't get choppy when they add character models to the mix...

@DeeZeee

It looks good as a static tech demo, but I really want to see it with dynamic lighting rather than what currently looks like 100% baked lighting.

Getting the castle to look good really isn't that hard if all the tough calculations are pre-rendered and it's just piping through textures. It'll be interesting to see how much they can make something like this interactive

The Tech Demo looks good, but it's pretty damn choppy on an iTouch. Would I buy a game made using it? Oh yeah. Would I buy it if it costs more than $10? Oh no.

@Ranben I got a iphone 4 and it worked flawlessly on mine. Your Ipod touch probably just does not have the memory for it. which is a shame. Maybe they will include a feature to turn down the graphical quality.

Ran great on my 3GS. I didn't even think it supported the older devices at all (iPhone 3g, Touch 2nd gen).

The 3rd generation iPod Touch has a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor and PowerVR SGX 535 GPU. The iPhone 4 has an Apple A4 (based on the ARM Cortex-A8 architecture) running at around 800 MHz and the same GPU.

Trust me when I say they're probably tech demos for the 3DS that look just as good.

im disappointed in you Joystiq, Engadget (your sister website) had this posted yesterday, already downloaded and explored the "Cidatel"

on topic, this is amazing, this will change just how gaming can be done on an iPhone. The graphics are almost on par with that of the Wii's and because its such a small screen you don't have pixels spread out and looks very nice. This and te idTech5 demo will def make other devs follow suit.

@PR0F3TA

I'd venture out and say that the Cidatel demo looked closer to Xbox/PS3 than Wii. Granted on a smaller screen which can hide some things sure, but I'm not certain I've seen much on the Wii looking that impressive.

Fun thought: what if Apple and OnLive/Gaikai got in bed for the next version of the Apple TV?

It's certainly impressive, but it does start dropping a lot of frames once you start moving around. I'll be curious to see if they can keep this sort of quality when it's also populated by characters, running AI, etc...

"You've got 16 gigs of flash memory, which is way better, faster memory than what most people have generally on a home PC,"

Am I misunderstanding this, or did he say the iDevices' general storage medium is faster than the RAM in most peoples' desktop computers?

If so, as an EE/computer engineering student I'm gonna call BS on this.

I was kinda confused by this as well. I have been a game developer for years and even develop on the iPhone. Even though I just do art, not the technical stuffs, I've never heard of using the storage Flash RAM as system RAM before.

He might be inferring that flash memory is faster than your typical HDD (running at a speed somewhere between 5200 - 7200 RPMs). This is partially correct; if there's a single bottleneck to be found in the modern desktop, it's the storage medium. Yet dingus seems to be forgetting why most desktops don't use flash memory as their primary storage medium: 1) flash is far more expensive than even 15000 RPM HDDs per gigabyte (a 1TB SSD using NAND flash memory can cost up to $1000), 2) the performance of an SSD varies widely depending on the controller, and 3) flash experiences performance degradation over time unless something like TRIM is used (which is only found on higher end HDDs). If he's comparing NAND to RAM...he really needs to keep his mouth shut when it comes to discussing technology; even slow RAM is stupendously fast compared to NAND and the few drives on the market that actually use RAM for storage (they're equipped with a backup battery so data isn't lost if the system's powered down) are bottlenecked by PCIe.

You know, if Apple wanted to make a game console, then WHY DON'T THEY JUST MAKE A DAMN GAME CONSOLE!!??

Because Apple has much less work to do establishing themselves as a legitimate player in the videogame market if they work with the consumer base they've already established with the iOS.

Unless it was cheaper than a Wii and readily provided a better consumer experience than say Microsoft's XBox and Live platform, they'd really have their work cut out for them. Wii's already got the casual crowd locked up even if they don't play their games. Sony and Microsoft have the hardcore console market locked up. Really what can Apple offer that's truly compelling? It would be easy to build a console that's more powerful than the 360 given that that technology is years old. But we already know that Microsoft is underway in the development of their new platform and surely, Sony and Nintendo as well.

Honestly, I don't see it as being a worthwhile venture for Apple. Besides, if they got their butt whupped, they wouldn't be able to make claims such as owning 50% of the gaming market as false as that may have been.

you guys do realize that these tech demos are pre rendered right that none of the rendering is done on the device itself so as soon as you add a rendered interactive model into the mix it might or might no look as good hopefully they find a way around it i mean the iphone is a pretty brilliant device overall.
