Japan pretty much had the videogame industry on lock through the 90s when I was growing up.

Now I'd say that its a three way spread between the US, UK and Japan for the best titles.

[On a semi-related note] Tried Vanquish on my 360 just now. Looks great but nothing special.

That's a good way to put it. I see all of these cheesy, retreaded, arcade-style games Japanese developers keep putting out and I'm just repulsed by them. Absolutely no interest level. I'd love to see them move into the 21st century; hire some real writers, tone down the over-the-top art style, focus more on immersion and innovation, and generally put out more mature, subdued, and inventive products.

Arcadey games are what drive the market primarily. The closer to the arcade experience you get, generally the more units and consoles you sell. Even the top-selling experiences on PS3 and 360 attest to that.

@Mr Khan Maybe in Japan. In the U.S., players want a more immersive experience. If all they care about is the Japanese market they can keep making this crappy, shallow games, but don't expect me to buy them.

What's ahead in the US? Even if we exclude Nintendo stuff, you look at Halo, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero. These games sell because they are arcadey.

It's so cool for this guy that he's working for Capcom, where they're at least actively trying to bridge eastern and western audiences.

Or maybe it's cool for Capcom that they've got Inafune? Hmm.

Capcom's been saying this for a while, but the evidence still isn't there. There are 5 dedicated gaming platforms on the market, and the West is proficient only on two of them

Considering the vast majority of games available on the 360, PS3, PC, and even the PSP are developed by Western companies, I fail to see how you have a point. Sheer numbers alone put Japanese developers at a disadvantage in the current market; for every Japanese-developer heavy hitter released, there are three or four Western games competing with it.

I don't think its the whole Japanesse Industry, just the JRPG makers, I mean, have we seen something new since the PS1s Final Fantasys?

Also, Platinum Games is seriously one of my favorite developers right, the 3 titles they have developed have all been awesome, and the Vanquish demo makes it a Day one purchase for me.

I kind of agree. It seems like Japanese developers haven't been making much progress in their gaming formulas. Truthfully the only Japanese made games I still like are the Fighters. Everything else is mediocre. Every time I play a JRPG I feel like I've already been here. Japan makes some of the best and over the top animated movies I've ever seen. I can't help but think to myself what would happen if they put these same mechanics into a game. That's why I have high hopes for Vanquished since it gives me that Appleseed/Ghost in the shell feel.

Note this is all my opinion.

Bayonetta was still a VERY typical Japanese game. Not that it's bad, but it's a terrible example when you could have more reasonably said MadWorld as an example.

I think they need to stop catering specifically for the Otaku audience for almost every single game they release.

Anyways; I hope out of this pessimism they can realise how to further their stake in the industry and make more awesome games (a positive).

As long as Japanese game designers keep appealing to the rabid fanbase, like Kojima said that is still living in the glorious 80's and 90's, that reside in North America, they will continue to suffer and lose marketshare. They seem to be hypnotized by cosplay conventions, zipper jackets, and cat ears. Unfortunately for them its the same kid from an Illinois basement, yea its flattering, but no amount of anime avatar internet forum posters is going to continue to grow your marketshare. Abandon them, move on.

As big of a Capcom fan as I have always been, I think Inafune really needs to assess Capcom's own position better. Making a something to just appeal to a western demographic is a bad design philosophy and shouldn't be a main focus in making their games good. After the missteps Capcom has made recently from western outsourcing of projects, to some questionable design choices present in re5, dmc4 and lost planet 2 which were aimed to help western sales by people like Takeuchi and Inafune, Capcom could certainly be doing a better job. Though it certainly isn't all gloom and doom with their fighting games, couple DS and upcoming 3DS games, MH, downloadable titles, and perhaps DR2.

RE5, DMC4 and LP2 were all awesome. RE 5 was cool, a next gen variant of their successful RE4 premise, with co-op. Absolutely fabulous. Ignore all the bad press about supposed racial undertones, its a good game. DMC4 was kinda meh for me, i was never a big fan of the series, but the public loved it, and the reviewers gave it relatively high scores. I thought it was fun, but kinda more of the same. Gave my copy to a buddy of mine.
Lost Planet 2 however is insane. Great Multiplayer again, probably coulda used some GUI tweaks, but its fun to hop in and out of campaign and battles. I personally feel like LP2 was a stronger title than DMC4, but what do I know. It ends up being less popular.

I personally think their design choice for SFIV was weak as hell, and yet the public loves it. And I am a classic SF fanboy. What I am trying to say is that its all kinda relative. Agreed, they shouldnt make it their focus to appeal to the western markets, true. And bring MH over stateside. Quit effing around. Reboot some old franchises (onimusha, anyone?) Give Rockman a effing vacation for pete's sake. Chun Li too. Whatever happened to Arika and the SF EX engine? What about Rival Schools?

The consumer can be (and most often is) very fickle at times, and hard to read & please.

@Spookimitsu late reply here lol
The only one I hadnt played is LP2 and was hesitant to add it, but said it anyhow on general reactions. Re5 was great fun just not re4 great for numerous reasons. DMC4 gameplay was great for both Dante and Nero I thought but was lacking in other areas.
As for SSFIV, Im not where I want to be skill-wise yet, but I think it plays great and looks great.

And yeah Capcom has a bunch of series that they could tap into that should definitely be revisited if developed with care. Looking at my comment, seems like the western outsourcing missteps will continue :/

And I hope leobebes is a joke poster.

I've got to agree with Keiji Inafune.

I mean many of us like myself poke fun at how there are 6 main Call of Duty games, but forget to think, how many darn games are Mario games or have Mario in them (probably close to 100 or higher)?

I have trouble even naming good games form Japan this generation, and all the high rated ones I swear get those ratings based on their name.
FF13 was a joke, there is no reason why a modern game should feel and be so linear. I mean really, I've thought other games were linear, but this one topped the cake. Resident Evil 5 has lost touch with what Resident Evil was all about, the creepiness and ammo conservation. Ninja Gaiden II was, um gory; and Sigma was the 3rd time they have made a certain NG story. DMC4 felt like a high res last gen game at its core.

Looking at my collection of PS3 and 360 games, I believe I can name two that I really enjoyed. Dead Rising and Valkyria Chronicles. What do you know, they aren't sequels. They were new ideas, perhaps that is why I enjoyed them so much.

The amount of game featuring Mario is over 200 probably like 200 or something to that nature since his debut in 1985. That means they had to have put out at least 8 games a year every year featuring this one character. That my friends is the true definition of milking.

You make a good point, but all of these Mario games have been made throughout the years on numerous different consoles.

Call of Duty is relatively young, and it seems like within the last few years there have been as many titles as there have been Maddens. (Albeit, I have already traded in my MW2 and currently am anticipating Black Ops)

Monster Hunter Tri is awesome, MGS 4 is very cool but all of these are kinda love it/hate it franchises. True RE5 might have lost touch with the survivalist roots, but damn is it fun.

Personally, I would like to see them update their classic D&D coin-ops for this generation of consoles, nice 6 player online RPG action would be nice (better get here before the new Diablo takes over the internet). Or Strider, we haven't seen a strider since they started practicing karate with Ryu. Or 1943.

And then they would do something like only release it in Nihon, just to piss me off.

"Inafune said that some Japanese developers are "still living the glory of the '80s and '90s," when the NES, Super NES and Genesis delivered a steady stream of hit games from Japan to the world. "So they don't admit that there is a problem to start with." He advised his colleagues to "get humble and start learning what's going on.""

Been saying that for years, now.

I have no problem with pandering to/touching on Otaku/Weeaboo sensabilities (especially if that's what the devs are into themselves), but that's absolutely no reason why they can't up their get with the times in terms of gameplay, functionality, or quality.

Nothing is theoretically stopping a Japanese dev from creating the next step up from Mass Effect which happense to be as Japanese as Japanese can be with androgynous male protagonists, cute talking animals, teenage DORAMA, and pantsu machine mini-games. And beyond all that window dressing of what may or may not be cool in the West, it could still be a goddamn amazing, revolutionary game to play. Nothing is stopping them, but it doesn't happen.

Perhaps its a vicious circle where they're having a hard time moving units so therefore they refuse to invest the money necessary to bring things up to a certain level, which then results in low ratings and bad word of mouth, which then blah blah

Where do you see androgynous male characters and cute talking animals in Mass Effect? Everything that resembled an animal wanted to take my face off.

And unless you purposefully create your character to look feminine, there are no male characters which you are unsure of their sex.

That's kinda my point. They could make a JPRG which plays like and has the depth of ME but still adheres to the cultural stuff which makes games distinctly Japanese, but noone is.

It's almost to the point where people are beginning to perceive rehashed gameplay elements as also being a cultural thing

If I had a problem with any japanese developer/publisher it would be square, hands down. They totally disrespect their american fanbase. Making people wait close to a year for an english version is ridiculous. Especially when you have guys like kojima and a few others who release internationally, at the same guy. I would boycott, but their games are usually good. If I ever met them in person (likely never), i'd make my point which would likely fall onto deaf ears.
