Duke Nukem Forever coming '2011' on Xbox 360, PS3 & PC, courtesy of Gearbox

It's finally, really, actually ... maybe going to happen at this point. The rumors are true: Gearbox Software and 2K Games have taken on the Herculean task of completing and releasing 3D Realms' unfinished Duke Nukem Forever. The project was officially unveiled today at PAX during a livestreamed presentation at the 2K Games booth and announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. "It's coming out in 2011," Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said during the presentation. (Of course, we're skeptical about any release date associated with this particular title.)
Gearbox began finishing Duke Nukem Forever in late 2009, according to The Wall Street Journal. "Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," Pitchford told WSJ.
"We're in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill," Pitchford added. "We need to get past the shock and awe, and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan."
Duke Nukem Forever is a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D and will feature both a single-player campaign and multiplayer. "Aliens come and say they're going to be our friends, and Duke knows this isn't going to work out," Pitchford revealed of the plot. "Duke once again is in the pivotal spot and it's up to him to save the world."

I don't know about this. I think it is more valuable to us gamers as a joke than an actual game to play...

@DangerMouse001 - It just raises the question of what the last studio was doing for the last 10 years.

It was valuable enough that someone would try to make a buck off the name, but given the hype over a decade, it's probably going to underwhelm.
Another possibility is that there is no Duke Nukem Forever game being launched. They've had demos and screenshots and videos before, after all. It could just be more of the same joke.
I'll still buy the thing if it comes out.

I still think Gearbox is, as the kids say, "rolling and trolling".

Agreed. I think I might get it (depending on how it looks, possibly after a price drop) just because of the lore surrounding it. I'm perfectly prepared to be underwhelmed though (which would make it a nice surprise if the game turns out to be actually good).

@Dustin F I have to agree with you. I mean, it was fun when we were in our teens or twenties, but how will a whole new generation of gamers see this game? the gaming industries come so far and spoiled us with such new and interesting concepts. is anybody really still interested in a horrendously outdated game?

This could end up being like Malice for Xbox. Lots of promises and push backs, and when it finally does release it is horribly antiquated.

This had better not distract Gearbox from making Borderlands 2.

I can't imagine this game having aged well with the current graphics/game engine and advances in FPS gaming mechanics.
If they're sticking with the whole "retro" PC look and gameplay, then make it a downloadable title for $20-$30.
Otherwise, I'm expecting a complete overhaul.

Hell no. That style would never fit Duke Nukem.

Making an online petition with 1700 sigs of mostly lame one-liner comments is hardly worth bragging about.

That is good news and all, and I am looking forward to the new Duke Nukem game. It's just that I am a little more excited about Aliens: Colonial Marines. It's been quite some time since I have heard anything from Gearbox at all on it's development, and I hope Duke does not get in the way of it's development.

i dont think they will honor that preorder as i recall they automatically cancelled all preorders related to duke forever... as they automatically cancel all preorders when the release date becomes delayed for a extended amount of time...

I met my best friend in 5th grade because we were the only kids in class that played PC games. At that time starcraft just came out, and I got to play Duke Nukem 3D for the first time (MYTH also!) on my teachers computer. Duke3D is one of my favorite games of all time and my best friend to this day still mocks my true hopes that this game will someday see the light of day.
This is a day one buy for me so I can ring my friends doorbell on release date with it in my hand and laugh in his face! Ive waited 13 years for this game, dont let me down!!!
