Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath remake coming to PS3 in 2011
65
Are you ready, Steef? Just Add Water is working on a high-definition remake of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. The Gravity Crash developer announced the project earlier today, highlighting it as the first in a "long and fruitful relationship" with the original game's developer, Oddworld Inhabitants. "Having a chance to update the great title and release it on PS3 is just a brilliant opportunity, not least for us, but for the fans too," added Just Add Water MD Stewart Gilray.
Set for release on PlayStation Network during Easter next year, the PS3 remake of Stranger's Wrath will offer enhanced 720p visuals, more detailed character models, remastered dialogue, PlayStation Move support and "additional bonus material."
When it launched on Xbox in January 2005, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath was notable for being, well, a really bizarre first-person shooter. It placed the franchise's environmental missive inside a wild and weird Western aesthetic, and replaced ammunition with ravenous fuzzballs. An EA-developed port for PlayStation 2 never made it to stores.

I'm curious why there's no XBox 360 love, and if you're doing it on the PS3, why no 1080p love either?

I wouldn't be surprise if we see a 360 version later down the pipe.
It really would be an ODD game for sony to snag an exclusivity deal for.

If there was/is to be a Xbox 360 version I dont think they will include kinect compatability

Who knows, but two ideas I came up with was the fact it was originally on Xbox, so they are pulling a Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Oddworld games sorta began life on PS1 so its a nice return to the brand, or both. Or maybe it's neither and they just felt like making a remake for PS3 with ideas of doing the same for 360 later.

Even if it is not released on the 360, it is not exclusive to the PS3. It was, afterall, an original Xbox game. Also, if my memory serves correctly, it is being ported to the PC (as well as Munch's Oddysee) to be a part of the "Oddbox" that is going to be released on Steam.

Abe's Oddysee wasn't technically a PS exclusive as it was released at the same time on PC.
So was Abe's Exoddus.

I dont have too many titles for my PS3 but most are in 720p, and that fact keeps me from buying them brand new. If the Bioshock games are in 1080p why cant Uncharted or God of War pull it off, for instance.
720p makes me feel like the devs are being lazy with the port.

"If the Bioshock games are in 1080p why cant Uncharted or God of War pull it off, for instance."
Except the Bioshock games aren't rendered natively at 1080p for any platform but the PC. Neither the PS3 nor the 360 have the computational power or the hardware necessary to run resource intensive games like God of War III or Gears of War at anything more than 720p; both platforms have enough issues maintaining a consistent 30 FPS at 1280x720 and doubling the number of pixels is going to cause the framerate to halve or drop into the single digits. The few console games that DO run at 1920x1080 natively have greatly reduced texture quality, no AA, little to no texture filtering, have fewer light sources, fewer post processing effects, and tend to use lower quality lighting in order to remain playable. You can have a fair amount of eye candy at 1280x720 or you can have little at 1920x1080, but you can't have both when it comes to the current generation of console hardware.

I believe you are thinking of The Oddbox which is a compilation of all the Oddworld games for Pc. It will most likely be on Steam.

I dont know exactly what the steam support will entail, whether its just patching and updates or possibly even access to valves first party stuff through some sort of steam based portal.
Steamworks doesnt make sense either, this is from wiki:
"Steamworks
On January 28, 2008, Valve released Steamworks, a free development and publishing suite (granted at Valve's discretion or with an Unreal Engine 3 license)[27][28][28] that gives developers access to every component of Steam.[29] Steamworks can be combined with a standard Steam distribution agreement, the latter of which gives it advertising space in the Steam store but also provides Valve with a share of revenue; Audiosurf became the first game to be released in this way in February 2008.[30] Several major games have since implemented Steamworks, including Aliens vs. Predator, Modern Warfare 2, Dawn of War II, and Unreal Tournament 3. Most games using the Steamworks API also opt for a presence in the Steam store. The only known exception (since Valve does not make announcements about such games) is NBA 2K9.[31] "
Whatever it is will still be linked some how with psn and there is no way Sony would allow valve to sell stuff through steam on psn (at least I dont think anyway, but they could prove me wrong) , so what they are actually doing I have no idea.. I still believe its only a way for valve to patch its own games and release mods etc for its own titles (something Microsoft refused for them to do). This would be beneficial to both companies as Valve can directly support and do what it needs through its platform and Sony doesn't have to worry about the additional bandwidth usage and constraints caused.

@McDuckScrooged You misunderstood the important part. Steamworks is basically just a set of libraries that allow steam specific functions. These include on the PC side also things that will FOR SURE not come to PS3 (e.g. voice chat).
From the sound of it the main part that will come to PS3 is as you also said the auto-update capability you spoke about and that is not even really part of steamworks (as the steam client handles that).
There are various other guesses out there (e.g. steam achievements, cross platform chat/multiplayer, ....) but nothing has been announced so far.

These are some damn fine news, gentlemen! I never played Strangers Wrath in the first place so this is a guaranteed buy from me.
I hope there's a possibility we'll see HD versions of Odyssey and Exodus down the line. Those are my very favorite games, next to Ico.

@poopdedoop My guess is that it's already been made, along with Ico, but they're waiting to release it closer to the release date of the Last Guardian in order to promote that game. Perhaps a few months before TLG, like GoW collection?

I doubt they'll be able to top this news at PAX. Stranger's Wrath is one of my absolute favourites, and it deserves to be played by more people. Hopefully this means a full-on revival of Oddworld Inhabitants and Oddworld in general. How awesome would it be to get Brutal Ballad of Fangus Klot, Hand of Odd, and the rarely touched upon Citizen Siege after all these years?!?
Please don't be too good to be true ... I don't think I could take Oddworld disappearing off the face of the Earth again.
