@Whoppinberg

By "10th floor", Pitchford means that the creator of the Duke Nukem franchise is in the -10th floor of the building, never to see the light of day ever again.

Yeah, I'd sell you a company if we spent 10 years making a game that never saw the light of day. I'd probably have a whole load of bills that racked up over the years too.

I think I might be the only one that isn't getting where the megaton levels of excitement for this game are coming from.

I should care more, having grown up playing the 2D and 3D Duke games, but.. I find myself being unable to care at all.

What's wrong with me? =/

Maybe you just don't get excited over the little things in life, like this guy:

I don't know, the boss battles seem pretty cool. And it's a shooter that isn't halo and that isn't based on "real" life, for once.

I wouldn't say I'm excited for it. But there is a chance it could be fun.

I find it interesting because in a way its a "fresh" game. In that it isn't a space marine or a modern-day American soldier running around being all serious and where the game tries to be a movie.

I like the silly premise where this guy is getting all annoyed because aliens stole our women :P

With you on this - I thought the first one was crap (no I don't mean the 3D one, I mean, the first one) - tried it for about 5 minutes, as I recall - and nothing got any better since. Really dumb concept. Probably intentionally dumb, but that doesn't necessarily make it better.

That said - forget the game - as a news story it is still pretty astounding so I definitely understand all the interest. (And I'm interested too, to an extent! But in the events around it, not the game itself.)

at the end they bought a very popular franchise, even if there has been no duke for more than 10 years i´m sure a lot of people are going to buy it even just for curiosity, if they can pull a good game I´m sure duke could be a very profitable franchise.....

I wonder if this will have any effect on the Duke Nukem Critical Mass trilogy that was supposed to happen on PSP. Haven't heard anything about that in quite a while.

Thank you.

This is possibly the best bit of gaming news that Ive read in a long time!

From the sound of things, a number of key 3D Realm's staffers have found a new home within Gearbox. This studio is really starting to come of age, with boarderlands and now this, Gearbox is quite the player these days!

No more Halo or Half Life ports for these guys. :o

"We bought Duke Nukem."

Duke's such a filthy whore! I wonder how much he settled for? Those strippers in his games must have been a bad influence on him.

I really think that this will be a bad business decision for Gearbox. I know that they have nostalgia and a love-of-videogames in mind in buying the IP and releasing Duke games, but Duke is dead. I was a big fan of Duke Nukem as a kid, I really liked those games, but the thought of playing as another muscle-ripped badass in a shooting game just bores me to tears... And if they change Duke from that to anything else then they'll be criticized for messing with the recipe.

I think it's just lose lose for Gearbox, a company I've always liked because of their connection with Valve.

You guys might want to replay the original Duke as a refresher before getting too stoked... It was a big deal back in its day because it was a nice stop gap between Doom2 and Quake 1. But really, when you take of the rose colored glasses of reminiscence and replay it you realize it plays like an SVGA Doom 2 mod.. the only thing is brings to the table are the attitude/one-liners which really only goes so far... It really was not that original/unique, IMHO... there just were not any competent shooters from anyone other than iD, so the field wasn't anywhere near as competitive as it was today. Everything else just *SUCKED* so bad that a few Clint Eastwood quips plus a decent 3D engine yielded solid gold.

It spawned tons of crapware, too, like the sh*tty PS1 third person games.

So, really, I'm in wait and see mode. Duke's a cool character (I have his action figure right beside my desk as I type). But, I hope GB DOES something *spectacular* with the franchise or it'll just continue as an industry cautionary tale.
