Half of Mass Effect 2 players imported a save (and other stats!)
119
Mass Effect 2 Executive Producer Casey Hudson has shared some juicy statistics about the game with IGN. Basic takeaways are that people really did treat the game as a "shooter," with the soldier class chosen more than every other combined. Also, the women's lib movement for intergalactic saviors still has some work to do, with 80 percent of players choosing the male Shepard.
The "anonymous player data" collected by BioWare is obviously meant to inform the studio in designing future titles. For example, players skipped 15 percent of conversations in the game, most of the time in "non-critical moments like in the hub worlds." Hudson says that if the company found people skipping 80-90 percent of the lines that they'd have to "reevaluate the work" the team put into digital acting -- and we'd have to reevaluate why people are playing Mass Effect in the first place. Check out IGN's piece for more on how the stats support current decisions and influence future projects.

Who only skipped 15% of the conversations?

I agree with some previous posters. I hope ME3 isn't MORE focused on the Soldier class. For my first play-through I played straight biotics. For my second play-through I played the soldier class as I wanted to have a completely different experience. While it was way easier I found it to be not as much fun. I loved making people float and fly around and setting them on fire.

I find articles like this really fascinating. We, as players, tend to get wrapped up in our own experiences with a game. It's shocking to see what the norm actually is. Look at all the comments where people just wanted to point out how they differed from the stats!
*cough*femaleengineer*cough*
Now I really want to see the stats filtered to only show initial playthroughs. My first game is my "plot playthrough" and all subsequent tries are for experimenting.

I relate the soldier thing with the ME1 import. Powers and the weapon specialization mechanic in ME1 were so poorly implemented I imagine most people would drop their "non-standard" characters to play a more straight up archetype with decent weapons.
I played an adept on my first playthrough in both ME1 and 2. Being an adept in ME1 was just painful, you had 40s cooldowns and a pistol to play around. In ME2 it changed so much you'd wonder if you were playing the same class.

I tried to play the first ME on no less than three separate occasions and got bored before getting out of the Citadel. It wasn't until I skipped ahead to ME2 and switched to lady Shepard that I got hooked (and went back and played through the first game so I could import a save).
Man Shepard is just such a generic and bland soldier boy. He's either a bland boy scout or a bland jerkass depending on how you play him. Give me lady Shepard any day. The superior voice work by Jennifer Hale doesn't hurt one bit either.

I guess I'm reasonably statistically unlikely.
I finished the game using an imported savegame from ME1. I played as female Shepard as an Engineer.
I did, however, use the face customization system and took an average amount of time to finish the game.
Looking forward to ME3 anyway!

@ipsum Do you really think this would attract the notice of the author?
"Andrew, you seem to have misread the statistics, please verify.
Editors, looks like this one slipped by you guys."
Seeing as neither your post nor mine has been replied to by a staff member, and the original article has not been edited, it does not appear that the author or editor can be swayed by either your 'good cop' or my perceived 'asshat' approach.
Maybe my block caps came off all 'volume at max,' or my reading comprehension comment was too harsh for a first offense, but at what point is incompetence acceptable? In such a competitive field as games journalism, you'd think the answer would be 'never.'

I beat it 3 times on 360. 2 times as a male Shep, one time as a Femshep. Classes were Sentinel, Soldier, and Engineer. More people should play as Engineer. It's a lot of fun.

Interesting. My playthrough was around 40 hours but I've done all the DLC (not including the DLC that just came out this week)
I can't believe you can spend 67 hours in there though. The only thing I can think of is they mined every single planet to depletion. UGH.

"Players skipped 15% of conversation in ME2"
The conversations were pretty streamlined and worthwhile for the most part. I'd like to see the data for DAO. God some of those conversations just carry on for way too long.

My first playthrough was 62 hours...
my second was 50
third was 48
and i'm about to start my forth, i guess it doesn't help that i obsessively scan every planet, hear every conversation tree i possibly can and revisit every planet with every teammate to hear new dialog..
I just love this game too much.. can't wait to start the Shadow Broker DLC this weekend finally!

PS3 gamers are going to miss a huge part of Mass Effect's universe by not getting to play the first game. They owe it to themselves to play ME1 on the PC or get a 360. IT'S JUST THAT GOOD.
