Mafia 2 banned in United Arab Emirates
25
According to a report from ME Gamers, the United Arab Emirates National Media Council has officially banned the sale of Mafia 2 within its borders. No statement has been formally issued by the NMC regarding the ban, though a report from Arabian Business (via Gamasutra) cites "excessive violence and nudity contained in the game."
Mafia 2 joins a laundry list of other titles deemed inappropriate by the UAE's media governance body, including this year's Heavy Rain and Darksiders. That said, reports in the past have pointed out the relative ease with which UAE residents can still pick up various "banned" games.
Mafia 2 has been criticized by UNICO National, an Italian American organization, as a "pile of racist nonsense." The game was also criticized by Joystiq for forcing us to spend "way too much time in shallow block-counter-repeat fistfights or behind the wheel of a clunky automobile."

Honestly, this shit is getting annoying. (Well not me personally, but I feel for the adult gamers out there). After a while these countries are going to start banning ALL games. Let the adults choose whether they WANT to buy an offensive game first before you try to do it for them.

It sucks, but at the time it is so easy to get pirated games in those types of countries. I haven't gone anywhere inside of the UAE, but I have gone to a few places in South America, Hati, etc. and see illegal shops selling pirated copies of games everywhere. You win some you lose some I guess

Well, the 'racist non-sense' part I can certainly agree to some degree. The choice of words they are using to describe certain race are not only derogatory, they were used with not much purpose and class too. The non-sense part, well the story itself probably is the culprit.
UAE is not missing anything..The game probably got banned due to excessive cut in missions, features, story, and DLC heavy model that they use :)

Actually, I think they were referring to anti-Italian racism. The anti-black racism exhibited by the mobsters in Mafia 2 was keeping with the Godfather movies, The Sopranos, and most other popular portrayals of the mafia.
Although I did notice that whenever I tried to rob a bar full of black people in the game, most of them ended up being armed while the patrons in the white bar weren't. Weird.

Mafia 2 is definitely an exercise in style over substance, but it makes up for it by providing one of the most convincing urban environments I've seen outside of GTA4. And like GTA4, I think the first game is meant to introduce the city and set the stage for future chapters that will flesh out the environment and give the player more specific stuff to do.

Not surprised Heavy Rain was banned too! Well it is just cultural differences!
