Elemental update due this week, enables multiplayer and other fixes
7
Stardock founder Brad Wardell (a.k.a. Frogboy) has announced on the official Elemental forums that this week will bring patch 1.08 for the game, which will finally implement multiplayer, as well as more performance optimizations and bugfixes in the wake of the game's troubled launch. Elemental's multiplayer was one of the game options that had been pushed back due to all of the other issues, so stalwart fans of the game are looking forward to mixing it up with others.
Wardell also says that the content connected with the Random House-published tie-in novel will be unlocking soon, so players who've bought the novel will get that. And Stardock is also planning to reveal some of the work going on for the mod community,
"along with easier in-game submissions of mods that aren't maps." Wardell says that's scheduled for the next few weeks, so it seems like he and his team are still working hard to win back players disappointed with how the launch went.

I still can't understand why the published the game without multiplayer component. They self-publish the game, they can postpone it as much as needed, and they were the ones that came up with the gamers' bill of rights (or something), which mentions not getting incomplete games or some such. I mean, launch date or not, the fans would've understood a 1 or two week delay to add multiplayer (not to mention running an extra beta to get those bugs) and non fans, well, it's not like many were aware of the game anyway.

I don't understand either, I gather there was some problems about shops releasing the retail version days in advance in a cheap attempt to get more bucks and this causing problems, but still, that was supposedly solved with the first batch of patches. Multiplayer only after two weeks and still several bugs to solve, not to mention performance issues? Either it was rushed from the beginning or got no playtest at all.
It doesn't mean it's never going to be good. Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines was broken to hell and back when it came out, but now it's awesome... After *SEVEN* versions of unofficial patches ON TOP of official ones, and don't get me started on Temple of Elemental Evil.
I might be interested in this game, but a year from now, when it'll be completely different from what it is now, assuming interest survives. Fortunately I'm immune to the "must have every game on day 0" fever, being always late to the party isn't bad when it gives you fixed games.

@2late2die The problem is publishers have to reserve space on store shelves. If they would have missed their release window the next available reservation they had for store distribution was March -- which means the entire release would have been delayed until March. Would you be willing to wait 6 months?

So, they want to win me back? Well, hurry up then. In about two weeks, Civ V launches. It may not have a magic system, it may not have the ability to rebuild a thrashed world, but at least it will do what it is told and work right out of the box. Uncle Sid will deliver the goods!
