While I believe Kudo for saying that there are many features that have yet to be tapped, it's hard to get as excited as he seems to be without actually seeing real working software that uses this potential. Kinect continues to be packed with potential in my mind, but until I actually hear a release date for a game that utilizes this potential, I will continue to be cautiously optimistic.

Just to be clear I'm not in the Kinect beta (unfortunately) but I've seen some of the leaked videos posted on Youtube. In Kinect Joy Ride you can select the color of your car by holding up any real world object in front of the camera. Kinect scans the object and makes the car the same color.

@McDuckScrooged Yeah it's just using the regular webcam. The only thing that Kinect could potentially do different is use the 3D depth sensor to isolate objects from the background and map out object depth. I thought it was pretty amazing when they demoed this with Your Shape Fitness Evolved.

I've also seen how the 3D camera maps out your entire room. They really need to start using this technology for Bing Maps and Google Maps street view. A regular camera does not give you this real world depth information; you just get a static 2D image with no realtime topography. Kinect lets you move around objects and see them from the side.

@cool8man dude the depth sensor is 320x240 which is pathetic. I dont understand why you are so hyped for kinect, its practically failed in every demonstration shown..

Here is another one for you:

Gametrailers demoing the skeletal tracking watch the avatars at the top.. Look at the comments, its just useless .

What would be the point of adding "depth" for colour grabbing ?Seriously I dont get why your such a cheer leader for this tech...

Doubt it, I think what they'll do is have you choose something in your house hold to act as the peripheral (like if its a sword in the game, you could use a remote control or a paper towel roll) & have it recognize that you're using that as the sword. & About the controller with Kinect, i think that they could use that in practical ways like let's say, Resident evil, you could hold your controller sideways & when you aim your controller to the screen, your character would do the same & you could press "A" to shoot.

so basically it's got "the potential" to do the same thing Sony was doing 3 years ago? not that it set the world on fire in 2007 or anything, either. it's pointless to boast about technology without demonstrating any quality products that support it.

This is the sort of stuff that has me optimistic for Kinect, and the reason why I'm probably going to purchase it. I like that Kinect appears to have much more possibilities and doesn't appear to be "tapped" of what can be done with it, a la motion controls (thank you Nintendo, for ruining motion control party games for me, haha). With Move, I expect more of the same that the Wii has already provided for nearly 5 years (or 4?). Hopefully, though, Sony and 3rd party companies creating games for Move think outside the box and provide unique experiences that the Wii hasn't yet created. Then I'd feel justified purchasing Move accessories.

It would be awesome if they could make a RTS game(Possible End War 2?) & have it use your voice & hand motions to move your troops around. I think that would really get PC gamers to jump on the 360 for Kinect.

True, they rather sit in front of a monitor & play starcraft 2 & ensure that their glasses lens will get thicker. Still, the concept is pretty cool. & you wouldn't need a headset since Kinect has a mic built in

It's conceivable that a strategy game could be made which would play OK with hand waving, but Starcraft/Supreme Commander/C&C type games where micromanagement, troop placement, etc factor in would always be inferior to play with a less precise interface

I understand that, but it kind of limits your movement when both hands generally have to be on the controller.

I'm just curious if there's hint in the above post that new controllers may come out to enhance the Kinect.

@FINALBOSS One thing it CANNOT do is sense depth. Kinect has a time-of-flight infrared depth sensor. PS Eye does not. and "mimic poorly" would be a more accurate assessment of Eye's ability to do the same.

I keep hearing people say Eye can do anything Kinect can do. This is completely false when you start looking at how well it could do it. For example, in the Yourself Fitness demo at PAX, a block would appear in front of your right hand. If you tried to hit it with your right hand, it would not break. The game forces you to cross your body to do the exercise correctly, making you hit it with your left hand. This method is ultimately more accurate than anything PS Eye alone can do and Eye would have a hard time doing this with the same accuracy and precision.

However, it's more than possible with the Move... but consider kicking with your feet. Are you going to strap Move controllers to your feet?

I didn't have a lot of appreciation for Kinect's precision until I tried it myself. I don't see a lot of application for hardcore games yet... and that's certainly a chance for you to change the subject and still try to "win the Internets"... but in terms of pure technical ability, Kinect is much better than you obviously want to give it credit for.

Mimic? I know you said "PS Eye," but we're really talking about a renamed EyeToy, here.

Hasn't that been out for, what, five years?

If anything, Kinect is an improved mimicry of the EyeToy.

@FINALBOSS A d-pad mimics a lot of the functionality of an analog stick.

Almost all Kinect games are impossible with a PSEye alone. Without the Move wand the PSEye has no depth detection. PSEye also has no ability to map a player's motion to an in-game character.

@cool8man Bullshit much ?

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/26/kung-fu-live-for-ps3-you-are-the-controller/

Kungfu live uses no move controllers and can map a person to an in gamecharacter.. Antigrav on the eyetoy also mapped you into the game using the eyetoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw7vihQoNV8 -- Basically debunks all the nonsense you are going to write..

@McDuckScrooged Kung Fu live is a perfect example of what I was talking about. That's a 2D game where you are restricted to movement in the X-axis and Y-axis. There is no Z-axis detection with Eyetoy or PS Eye. That is the entire purpose of the Move controller, to enable Z-axis detection.

The Eyetoy games like Antigrav restricted you to moving your body up, down, left and right. So for example in something like Sonic Free Riders which is very similar to Anti-grav you have the ability to boost by putting your foot forward towards the screen and sliding it back away from the TV like you are on a skateboard. You also can throw objects at the screen like missiles or a bowling ball or swing a olf club. You could never do that with an Eyetoy. And if you were to switch stances the Eyetoy would not be able to tell like it can with Kinect.

This is a perfect example of someone not understanding how much more advanced Kinect is than Eyetoy. People like this will eventually come to understand the difference though. They're just going to have to see it in action for it to finally sink in.
